Matte liquid lipsticks have been super popular lately…because they’re great! They’re intensely pigmented and long-lasting, but my goodness, they can be drying! I’m always experimenting with different lip balms that I can wear underneath them, and I think I’ve finally found the perfect layering product.
Murad Rapid Collagen Infusion for Lips ($24) is basically like a serum for your lips. It has the most unique texture that soaks right in. Five seconds after applying it, it looks like it’s gone, but my lips feel way softer.
I thought I’d tried every lip balm under the sun (and, to be honest, they all seem really similar to me), so I didn’t expect this to be much different. But it is. It creates the perfect base for liquid lipsticks because of how thin it is while still being incredibly moisturizing.
Now, in the interest of full disclosure, I have to say that this isn’t marketed as a lip primer. In fact, it has collagen, hyaluronic acid and shea butter, which are all meant to plump and smooth, and it definitely does smooth my lips, so I can happily report that it does what it claims.
The fact that it’s such a perfect match for liquid lipsticks is just a bonus, LOL. I will always have a place in my heart for those heavy lip balms (which I love to put on before bed), but if you want something that will moisturize your lips without interfering with your lipstick at all or leaving a residue, this is definitely it.
Murad Rapid Collagen Infusion for Lips is available at Sephora for $24, so it’s definitely not cheap, but it works and it’s the only thing that I’ve tried that makes liquid lipsticks actually comfortable!
Have you tried this? What do you use to make long-lasting lipsticks more bearable?

This definitely piques my interest!

^^ What the commenter above said. The price tag hurts my heart & I don’t wear liquid lippies that often but this sounds like a major contender. I actually apply a lite layer of EOS lip balm before I wear matte lippies. I know they’ve gotten bad press lately & they don’t work for keeping my lips moisturized in the Winter. But they help my lips retain moisture when applied before a matte lippie. Otherwise, I use good ole’ Blistex ointment. At $1 a pop, the price can’t be beat but it works miracles on dry, chapped lips. Love its healing properties. 🙂
Adia says
Yeah, it’s a spendy product for sure. I should check out the Blistex, though. It’s been around for so long for a reason!

I like to use FRESH
Sugar Lip Serum Advanced Therapy as a primer. It works like the Murad; it absorbs quickly and leaves my lips moisturized and perfect for matte lipsticks. It fills in my lip lines and makes them smooth. The effect doesn’t last though, it’s not much of a treatment, just better as a base.

That’s a great tip, I have some of that and I’m going to start using it! Thank you!
Adia says
Oh I love Fresh products! I need to check this out next time I’m in Sephora!

Definitely need to try. I’ve used the bite agave lip mask, but it can be too thick. I mostly skip liquid lips because they are too drying for me. I personally love a glossy lip, so matte lips have to be very comfy.
Thanks for the tip.
Adia says
This is much thinner than the Bite lip mask, so it may make matte lips more comfy for you 🙂
Sandy says
Thanks for the tip, I will definitely try this. I am always on the lookout for good ‘underwear’ for a matte lipstick!
Adia says
LOL, Sandy. Yes this is good underwear!

Ooooo I am a huge fan of Murad! And now I am so interested in trying this. My favorite lip moisturizer I’ve found is the Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask, which I think someone else mentioned. And they are right, it’s a little too thick to wear under a matte liquid lipstick. BUT I will wear it at night a few days before the weekend so my lips are super moisturized and good to go for those weekend nights out! I swear by the agave lip mask. I am definitely going to pick up this Murad one! You sold me on trying it out haha.
Adia says
Let me know if you try it, Emily! Also, looks like the Bite lip mask is a favorite, so I def need to check it out 🙂

I just wear my NUXE Reve de Miel underneath, but I blot it nearly all the way off before applying the lipstick. It’s usually been on at least 30 minutes at that point so it really helps.
Adia says
I think blotting is a nice trick to making thicker balms more lipstick; thanks for sharing! I recently bought some of the NUXE, but in the tube. LOVE it!
Eesha says
I am definitely going to give this a try as I love liquid lipsticks but find them drying my lips if I don’t moisturize my lips well!
Adia says
It’s a shame there aren’t more moisturizing formulas!
Chris25 says
This could be a real game changer!
Adia says
It’s made liquid lipstick so much more comfortable for me!
Fran says
I might give this a try — thanks for the tip!
Adia says
No prob, Fran 🙂

To be honest I just go with taking extra care of my lips before and after and accepting the fact that I cant wear liquid lipstick two days is a row. But that one sounds like the perfect option, and a little collagen and smoothing never hurt anyone.
Adia says
Yeah, I really think it makes liquid lipsticks so much smoother and more comfy for my lips!
sarahc says
Oh please oh please oh please! I hope this works for me because I love a matte lip but my pout needs help.
Adia says
I hope it works for you! Let me know if you try it!
Erin says
That sounds nice, too bad collagen is too bid to get absorbed by the skin!
Adia says
Agreed! It’s not a permanent fix, unfortunately.

I bought this product, the Murad Rapid Collagen Infusion, based after reading this post! I’m very happy to report that IT WORKS! I purchased one tube of the ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick (easily the most drying liquid lipstick that I own) and had tried to wear a very thin layer my usual lip balm, Lucas Paw Paw Ointment, underneath; however, it prevented the ColourPop from drying down so it transferred everywhere and the color also settled into my lip lines. I applied the Murad and let it sink in for about 15 minutes. The ColourPop dried down, I did a tiny bit of transfer when I kissed the back of my hand, but I did NOT get that uncomfortable tight, pulling sensation that was borderline-painful that I experienced if I tried to wear it alone. HALLELUJAH! So happy to find something that works and thank you for the recommendation!
