I’m glad I gave this look a try, even though I don’t think I look nearly as cool as the girl I based it on from Nylon magazine…
Seriously, I look like I just grew a second pair of eyebrows, LOL! — purple glittery sparkly eyebrows, though. Which are beautiful in their own way, right? Maybe?
So this is what I came up with for my first look based on the bookmarks and Post-It notes I did in those magazines the other day. I’m giving myself 30 days to recreate different looks that are out of my comfort zone, and this was one from Nylon with a sparkly minimalist purple cut crease.
Before I started, I spent a few solid minutes just looking closely at the model, and here are the things that jumped out at me (other than her purple cut crease)…
- Her big, BOLD fluffy brows, which look pushed up and out toward the inside, where the hairs are super separated and defined.
- Her skin, which looks a little dewy. There’s some highlight action reflecting off the center of her forehead, her nose and under her eyes, but it’s not an intense highlight.
- The wash of nude color on her lids. It looks like there’s also a super skinny brown liner line along her upper lash line.
- Her lips. I wonder if that’s her natural lip color. If it is, lucky duck! It’s beautiful. It looks like she might be wearing a just-right balm because it doesn’t look too creamy or shiny or heavy or matte. I’m guessing it’s a lip liner-lip balm combo.
With these things in mind, I rifled through my makeup collection and came up with this sparkly, glittery cut crease.
First, I started by kind of sketching out the shape of the cut crease (a.k.a. my glittery second set of eyebrows) on my lids with Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner in Metalhead, which is a liquid purple glitter liner and, once I had a good amount of that on, I dipped my favorite NARS #47 angled brush into a purple glitter shadow from the Urban Decay Moondust Palette, wet it with Make Up For Ever Mist & Fix to amplify the glitter, and then pressed it right on top of the glitter liner.
I did that a few times until I got the cut crease this shiny, glittery and intense.
For my big, fluffy brows, I filled them in with the current love o’ my brow life, MAC Brow Sculpt Brow Pencil in Brun, and then used a boat load of Benefit clear brow gel to push and fluff them up, especially at the front.
I mean, I did as much as I could… The model’s brows are incredible! Mine don’t look that full, but I tried.
Next, for my skin, to get that dewiness, I used MAC Matchmaster Shade Intelligence Compact (my shade is 4.0), which is MAC’s cushion cream compact. It’s medium coverage and has a satiny finish.
Then, I set that with Clinique Uplighting Illuminating Powder in Golden Glow, which is an all-over face highlighting powder with a pearly finish.
At that point, I still wanted more sheen on specific areas (under my eyes, on my nose and in the middle of my forehead), so I tapped a little bit of RMS Beauty Living Luminizer, a creamy pearl highlighter, on those same areas.
I lined my lips and filled them in with rosy nude Urban Decay 24/7 Lip Pencil in Manic, then topped it with Chapstick, of all things, LOL! Chapstick Total Hydration Moisture + Tint in Coral Blush.
I felt absolutely NUTS when I was done, but I’m glad I gave this a try. It was fun! So what if I looked like I grew a second pair of glitter purple eyebrows. It’s makeup. You can always wash it off, right?
I got some great feedback in the comments yesterday about doing a group makeup challenge (no pressure — just purely for fun, and maybe we’ll learn something at the same time), and I want to get your opinion. How does an Instagram challenge sound? I don’t know if you have an Instagram account (here’s mine), but if you do, I could start by posting one look a week, and maybe you could re-create the look? We could all use the same #hashtag so that we can find each other and give each other encouragement and support.
It’ll be fun! And easy! Let me know if you’re interested.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I think an Instagram makeup challenge would be super fun! And for what it’s worth, I think you’re totally rocking this look. How cute would this be in gold, silver, or green for a funky holiday party with friends?
Karen says
Sweet! Are you currently on Instagram, Katie?
Katie says
Yeah! It’s probably the social media I spend most of my time on…
I’ve always been terrified of posting pictures of myself (it’s a ridiculous fear of people thinking I’m totally self-absorbed) but maybe a makeup challenge will force me to face that fear!

Yes, upright, it does look like a glittery 2nd eyebrow, but in the posed/editorial photo, it looks cool! Your skin is fantastic and perfectly dewy.
This random color cut crease was all over the runways in recent seasons. I think it looks killer. A little cray cray for everyday, but killer.
Karen says
Aw, thanks Gloria! Who knows, maybe a second set of glitter eyebrows will be the next big thing? LOL!
Do you think you might want to get in on an Instagram challenge?
Julie says
I love it! I think I would be in for an instagram challenge. It would be good for me to break out of my shell.
Frosty says
Not a fan. Your skin looks amazing – everything but the glitter cut crease looks beautiful. I think high concept editorial crap like this looks so silly – it’s makeup artists getting bored. Who walks around looking like that?
Karen says
Aw, really? I like doing looks like this, even just for the heck of it. You don’t really need a reason for makeup. It’s fun and creative, even if I don’t wear it anywhere. Or even if I do. And it washes off.
FROSTY says
Hmmm . . . I can see that. You did the look exactly and you have a good eye for the detail. I like the look of that purple but definitely in a different placement for me.

If we’re doing the Instagram Challenge I’m in, I think the hashtag can be #mbbmadedoit or #rockinitlikekaren it’d be a lot of fun.
About this look, do you think it’ll look less awkward if the glitter crease were more blended?
Cindy says
The instagram challenge sounds like such a fun idea! The lips are totally what I’m after these days so I’ll have to try it soon.

It’s crazy! But I like crazy, so 😉
Jessica says
ok I love glitter but that crease look is not for me.
I didn’t care for it in the Sephora ad either.
Amy says
Love it! This kind of experimental thing is fun. 🙂
Makes me wonder what it would look like to put the purple lower down, touching the crease and right above it. All the color without the “second brow” effect. I might wear that out of the house!
Not on Instagram, not against it but have to pick and choose media based on time. But fully support others doing the challenge! Just post some of the pics here when you’re done!

KAREN,
We all don’t have a cat ! Actually, I had a beloved Dog. ( Never called her Dog in front of her )
But I did kiss her. We had to put her down right before Thanksgiving !
Its still breaking my heart.
Not sure if I would put the Purple Line on as in the PIC.
I might use it as liner tho. ya think ?
My brows are presently Micro-bladed! Best thing I ever did. Cut my makeup time in half ! Maybe even more. And I collected so many “Brow” helpers. I don’t have to return for one year. And I got in on a special ! If you ever East Coast, her name is Kristin at ANU spa in Marlton, NJ
Have a great week .
Kiss your cat for me ! And Connor Claire.
Michele
