Um … in case you were wondering, I *do* shower and change on a daily basis, 🙂 despite the fact that I’m wearing the same black shirt and gold necklace in this video, LOL! What I did was record a few videos at the same time.
Episode 5 links and notes

About video, I’m really starting to have fun with them again, spending too much time as usual. El Hub wonders what I’m up to sometimes when I’m in my office and talking with the camera running at midnight, ha!
Do you guys have a preference between YouTube, Vimeo or another video site? I’ve been partial to Vimeo because I like the design of their player (pink!) and the site itself. I also really dig the kinds of videos they attract (lots of indie creative pros and artsy stuff), but YouTube doesn’t charge for HD plays. Vimeo does, which kinda blows.
I’m still going to post videos on both sites (here’s my YouTube channel and Vimeo page), but I may just embed them with for a while.
YouTube veterans, can you suggest any tips/tricks or makeup gurus I should subscribe to? I’m a YouTube noob. I’m learning as I go along. Thanks in advance. 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I like pinkiecharm. She does a lot of MAC reviews. She doesn’t really talk about application though, just the new products.
NINA says
im getting really interested in the UDPP Eden. While I love, love Sin, there are times when a matte look is called for and sometimes Sin and even the Original can get a bit too shimmery.
That primer is going on the list! 😉
Karen B says
Well, I got the original one in September and mine has the angled brush so I guess they changed that on the original formulation as well.
And my date moved to TOMORROW. Aaaaah 🙂

Hi Karen!
Love the vids and your hair is so pretty. 🙂
I like the way Vimeo looks compared to You Tube, but SO many people are on You Tube, it’s hard to decide. I have a You Tube account also and didn’t know you were on there. I shall subscribe now!

I like Eden too… But I have oily lids, so it kinda still crease on me when my eye lids gets oily. Karen, do you have any tips and tricks to avoid this?
I also had to depot it because it came in broken. I didn’t realize this until a week into using it. I actually like it better with the tube because it’s just easier… I wish I still have the tube.

I prefer youtube as it doesn’t do weird things like Vimeo on my system (vimeo + Ubuntu Linux = not a good combo). YouTube runs smoothly but Vimeo will stop every few seconds even after it’s buffered on my system.
Eden is completely different than Sin and the Original UDPP. It’s meant to be matte and has no parabens, sulfates or fragrances while it looks like the original has maybe a paraben or two. I find that Eden makes my skin super dry unlike the original (I have both). Eden also does not match my skintone AT ALL. I think they made Eden for people who may be allergic to the original UDPP but liked what the primer did.

Lauren Luke, misschevious and pixiewoo are my three fave YouTube makeup gurus. I like Michelle Phan’s videos as well, now that I think of it.

My favorite makeup gurus are juicystar07, allthatglitters21, and makeupbytiffanyd !
I have the original primer potion and it came with an angled applicator also, so they might’ve changed it for all of their primer potions.

Hi Karen!
My preference is YouTube because I subscribe to a bunch of makeup gurus on there so it’s nice to have them all in one place, but I come to your blog regardless 🙂
Some of my favorite YT gurus are MichellePhan, MakeupGeekTV, pinkiecharm, julieg714 (she does some amazing nail designs!), and MissChievous.
Have a great day (:

Hi Karen,
I would say I prefer youtube. I didn’t know you had a youtube channel…I’m going to have to subscribe to that one. 🙂
My fave youtube beauty gurus are Marlena from Makeup Geek, Tiffany D, JulieG713, Misschievous & Ricebunny (Michelle Phan). They have some great tutorials and reviews and are an awesome resource when I’m looking for makeup inspiration. (^_^)
I hope you enjoy their channels as much as I do…especially Marlena & Tiffany (they’re my favorites!).
Hope you have a great day!

Pixiwoo- can’t promote them enough. Sam and Nicola are makeup artists in real life, so all the advice they give is really helpful. Their looks and reviews are always fantastic!
Some other makeup “gurus” I like:
-emilynoel83- She’s a sweetheart! She mainly does videos with drugstore products, which I find just perfect for me.
-gossmakeupartist- Another sweetheart! He’s also a real life makeup artist, and truly loves his subscribers.
-temptalia- I got the link from Christine’s blog- Love both the website and their YouTube!
-xteeener- She’s pretty young, but I find her tutorials very helpful, since we have the same eyelid fold, which is a HUGE plus. She’s been on YouTube for a while, but hasn’t “Sold out.” 😀
Yeah, those are the only makeup channels I’m aware of. Let me know if there are any other good ones!
Meg says
Truthfully I’d love to see you continue with Vimeo videos. I know that YouTube has this whole beauty guru community, but I feel like it is all getting very generic and commercialized. I am all for people like you making $$ off of doing what you love, but everyone is on YouTube doing the same videos and it’s so hard for anyone new to come up with something fresh and be seen when the gurus have kind of monopolized things by all doing the same thing. This sounds much more harsh than I mean it to, but I just have really enjoyed seeing you as your own person and not grouped in with all the other gurus on YouTube. JMO!

Hi Meg,
Happy St. Paddy’s! I totally agree about Vimeo and prefer their whole vibe, but I wish they didn’t charge $ for HD. YouTube doesn’t, and their player seems to work better too. Fewer people seem to have problems playing YouTube vids. As for the beauty guru community on YouTube, I’m interested in what other beauty fans are up to but don’t plan to copy anyone. You know me. 🙂 I will do my own thang.

ooo i have this in the original and a sample size in sin but im running out of the original so i think i’ll pick this up next time i’m at sephora..
i also have a quick question but wasn’t really sure where to post it…i just got birds and berries eyeshadow today and i want to wear it to work tomorrow, i figure it has a little green in it and tomorrow is st. pattys day. my work is pretty laid back so i dont need to worry about wearing makeup thats too colorful.. i was thinking of putting it all over the lid and lining my eyes with black liner, do you have any suggestions for what i could put in the crease? i am fair skinned with dark hair and blue/green eyes.

MakeupByRisa is very inspirational. Especially if you’re into bright looks.

I didn’t know you did videos on youtube! I’ll head on over and subscribe 🙂
My favourite people to watch on youtube are: makeupbytiffanyd, pixiwoo, lollipop26, and showyoumakeup.
I hope you enjoy their videos if you do end up checking them out!
Sally says
I love that you just called primer potion O.G. That cracked me up!
You are hilarious, and I love these videos :]

I’m a HUGE fan of pixiwoo. They do make-up the way I like to wear it, and I appreciate their more artistic looks as well. They are really talented. I also subscribe to MakeupGeek, but though she seems SUPER nice, I’m not as into her layered almost “goin’ to a club” look. My daily life doesn’t consist of those type of activities. 🙂
Ashley says
Vimeo, Vimeo, Vimeo. Youtube in HD never loads or plays after buffering for me. Plus, I hate the Youtube Beauty Guru community. Over the past year or two, I find it’s changed into a generic, flaunty, look at what I bought, load of boogers! Most gurus are sponsored & have sponsored giveaways. Then, there are some that make money off 10 minute “look at what I bought this weekend” videos per each view. And some are great great role models that give birth to 15 year old girls who take on the role of “Beauty Guru”. No joke, I watched a 15 year old do a Sephora haul worth over $700+ because their favorite Youtubers recommended it.
Still it could happen on Vimeo too but Youtube attracts way more attention & the wrong kind.
Aina says
Agree agree agree agree!
It’s become a contest of who has the most stuff, who owns the most expensive things, and who can make the most money off their clueless (and YOUNG) subscribers. I can’t believe some of these young teens, constantly hauling! You have to look far to find sincere, not-in-it-for-the-money-or-popularity people out there. It’s a shame, it really is.
Karen says
Hi, Ashley. I’m gonna keep posting all of my vids on Vimeo too even if I embed them on the blog with YouTube. The prob is that Vimeo charges for HD plays and YouTube doesn’t. I was telling to Meg up above that I also like Vimeo’s non-commercial vibe better, but the HD $ thing is a dealbreaker. It can really add up fast.
I see some sketchy stuff going on at YouTube, but I think it’s mostly because of how huge it is. With zillions of users you’re always gonna get some peeps breaking rules or being uncool. But no matter what anyone else is doing on YouTube, there’s no way I’m going to start being a different person just because I’m using it too. I will fight the power, LOL! Have a good hump day, girl.
Marce says
Hey Karen! Now we’re talking, I can see the videos WAY better than with vimeo. Does the matte base actually change anything in the shadows you apply on top of it? Sounds good, but I really like my TFSI.
For youtube I usually check out Petrilude, Pixiwoo, Michelle Phan, Mischievous, xSparkage…um if I think of any more I’ll def let you know!

My favorite by far is the Pixiwoos channel. They are two sisters from England, and they are amazing. I’ve learned a lot from them.

I’ve been liking my UDPP in Eden so far but I dropped it today on the bathroom floor and it literally cracked open right below where the lid connects to the bottle! 🙁
Megan says
I like Vimeo better, but only because YouTube is blocked on our network at work…so then if I am catching up on some posts at work, I can see your videos. The ones on Youtube I can watch if I read the posts at home, but if I read it at work I rarely remember to go back and check out a youtube video at home.
veronica says
Sigh. My Sin exploded in my suitcase this weekend. They checked my carry on bag, and my Smashbox blush was also a casualty (it had already hit pan, but it broke up and there’s not enough left to do the ‘ol alcohol trick). I might have to give Eden a try, although I do still like my OG Primer Potion as well.
YouTube is ok, but Vimeo seems to have been streaming quality. Plus, YoouTube tends to be filled with troglodyte commenters.
.-= veronica’s last blog post… How relevant is computer engineer Barbie? =-.
Karen says
What a bummer! 🙁 Do you ever do the “wrap your makeup in bubble wrap/rubber bands” trick? It’s kinda CML (crazy makeup lady), but it works well for travel, especially if you’re checking stuff in.
veronica says
I haven’t tried that! The next time I think there’s a chance that my luggage will be checked (I almost never need to bring a bag that’s too large to fit in an overhead) I’ll take some extra measures. I think the sin exploded from the pressure, though. The bottom just popped right off!
.-= veronica’s last blog post… How relevant is computer engineer Barbie? =-.
Karen says
It’s a little OCD but it definitely takes the worry out of the equation.
SUCKS that the bottom popped off… that’s never happened to me with Sin (which I love, btw), but just in case I’ll be sure to put it in a separate plastic bag next time I travel.
Oh, and I hope you try Eden. I think it works even better than Sin!
Michelle says
Hi! It seems that youtube load better on the mac even with the slow connection we get in our country. Vimeo does not load at all sometimes.
