Guest blogging from Argentina, MBB reader Marcela shares her take on a Star Trek inspired face of the day using some of her favorite products from MAC Cosmetics.
Hi, everyone!
My name is Marcela. I’m no trekkie, having never watched any movies beginning with “Star” (Star Wars, anyone?), but hey, there are a couple (or a lot) of you out there who DO like sci-fi movies, so this FOTD is for you.
Now, this look is a sultry and dark, smoky black and gold eye — maybe a bit over the top, but you can tone it down (or switch it up!).
I don’t know why, but I didn’t line my bottom lash line with black. I’m sure that would have given the look a bit more va va voom!
The long winged liner was inspired by Spock’s upturned eyebrows, and the colors by — wait for it — a starry night!
Very original indeed… 🙂
Anyway, I liked how it turned out. I hope you do, too.
Here are the products I used:
Face
Foundation: La Roche Posay Toleraine (applied with a sponge wedge)
Powder: MAC Mineralized Skinfinish in Medium Dark (applied all over)
Blush: A shimmery golden bronze blush
Contour: MAC Mineralized Skinfinish in Dark
Highlight: The shimmery side of the MAC Mineralized Skinfinish Duo in Dark
Eyes
Primer: Too Faced Shadow Insurance
Eyelid base: Any black cream shadow (applied to the outer 2/3 of the lid)
Eyelid inner corner: A mix of MAC Eye Shadow in Sumptuous Olive and MAC Flip (or any other bright gold shadow)
Eyelid: MAC Solar Bits in Black Ore (applied with MAC Mixing Medium over a black cream shadow)
Crease: MAC Eye Shadow in Carbon
Brow Highlight: MAC Eye Shadow in Modest Tone
Tearduct: MAC Eye Shadow in Solar White
Liner, Upper: MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack
Liner, Lower: MAC Eye Shadow in Flip
Mascara: Givenchy Eye Fly
Lips
Lipstick: A flesh-tone lipstick like MAC Lipstick in Myth
Lipgloss: The peachy bronze gloss from Tarte’s Purse Your Lips Clutch applied under MAC Lipglass in Pink Grapefruit
Finish: A dab of a peachy gold pigment in the middle of the bottom lip
Notes
I really have to apologize for a couple things…
First of all, the quality of the pics. I just couldn’t capture the gold sparkles, and lord knows I tried. Second, I’m sorry about using so many limited edition items! I usually splurge on limited editions that I don’t want to miss, but then I don’t have anything left over to get permanent collection items, LOL! Am I the only one who does that?
For dupes, if you don’t have MAC Solar Bits, I suggest using a black cream shadow with gold sparkles, like Stila’s 24K Smudge Pot or MAC Fluidline in Blitz & Glitz (catch Karen’s post about these two!), or just any black shadow with some gold glitter on top (make sure it’s eye safe!).
The MAC Eye Shadow in Modest Tone came out with the MAC N collection last year, and I used it because it’s similar to my skin tone and not too sparkly. I wanted a neutral color on my brow bone to keep the focus on the sparkly lid.
Instead of MAC Solar White, you could use any white or light gold shadow, and MAC Lipglass in Pink Grapefruit could be replaced with Lychee Luxe, or any other coral gloss.
Something else I’d like to share is a tip I discovered while doing my makeup.
Well, it’s not much of a tip, but I’d never, *ever* thought of it before. You know how it’s a bit of a struggle to put mascara on your bottom lashes? Well, for some reason I used a sample tube, and it worked great! Since the wand is smaller, it’s easier to coat every teensy lash, and the best part is that you don’t have to pay big bucks for samples, right?
So, there you have it, my Star Trek inspired FOTD. 🙂
Have you ever done a look inspired by a movie before? Please let me know in the comments!

This came out great. Love the gold & black combo & definitely something I would wear so I can’t wait to try it out. Thanks for the inspiration.
BTW – for some reason I never knew Flip was such a pretty gold shadow. This was LE right? If so, guess I missed the boat, but if not, this is a color I’ll have to pick up. It’s beautiful!!! 🙂

I just love the look! The eyes are VERY gorgeous and they remind me of a major female character from the movie–her liner was used the same way. I ESPECIALLY love the gold and black! Very gorgeous! I look forward to more guest posts by you! XD

Very pretty! I am going to try this look, since I am a big Sci Fi fan (almost anything with the word Star in the title works for me!). I blame my husband. I thought I didn’t like science fiction before but he introduced me to some great movies and series. I don’t have the exact same shades, but I definitely have similar ones. Thanks for the great post!
