My favorite part of the MAC Chris Chang collection has to be the lipsticks…or maybe the eyeshadows… Wait, but I love the Cream Colour Bases too! But for now, let’s just talk about the lipsticks. Every color is unique and different in some way and, in typical MAC style, the formulas are spot on.
I started out excited by three of the colors and a little perplexed by two. How on earth am I, or anyone really, supposed to wear a sheer blue and a sheer yellow lipstick?? If they were opaque, that would be one thing, but they’re really sheer, which didn’t make sense to me. They just don’t look right on my lips!
I think I figured it out, though. I remember learning from someone on YouTube that most makeup artists keep a yellow lipstick in their kit, and the reason is because you can layer it on top of other lip colors to create a custom hue! Aha! That’s how you can use it. You can use Gold XIXI to add warmth to another lip color, and Cloud Gait to cool it.
Let me show you what I’m talking about…
Here’s MAC DDDevilish Lipstick from the collection:
Now here’s what happens when you layer Gold XIXI on top of it:
You have a completely new color! How cool is that! Now let’s see what happens when you layer Cloud Gait over top of DDDevilish:
Isn’t that pretty cool?! By having these two extra lipsticks in your collection, you add so many more options to your lip wardrobe because you can customize pretty much any color you have.
I may be completely wrong about what MAC intended with these two colors, but that’s how I plan to make the yellow and blue more wearable for me.
The others, though, are stunning on their own. My favorite has to be Vermillion Vee, a gorgeous, slightly orange-toned red, and I can’t wait to rock Plum Princess with a taupe-y smokey eye.
Did you learn something new about yellow and blue lipsticks today? I know I did!

Brilliant! I know about this layering “trick,” but I never remember to do it, or more like I’m too lazy and would rather just reach for the shade I want. It’s good to see it in action every now and then to remind myself that, yes, layering sheer funky colors can produce some amazing results.

Haha I totally agree, most the time I will just reach for the exact color I want, but hey! It’s nice to have options sometimes too! 🙂

Oooh, so nifty!! I wanna get me those blue and yellow lippies… I really love the plum, too. And the Vermillion Vee is such a bright, summery red!
…Basically I want all the makeup ever, lol.
Jen Clark says
I know how you feel girl! It’s so hard to choose what to actually get when you want it all!!
Charlotte says
vermillion fee is the most beautiful red I have ever seen. Ruby woo, dragon girl, and the other highly-touted reds never impressed me the way this one has. It is stunning.c
Charlotte says
Vee* damn you. Autocorrect
Jen Clark says
I’m not kidding you, it’s sooo stunning! I’ve been wearing it every chance I have!
Becky says
Woah!! I did not expect that!! What a great outcome. Terrible for my bank balance mind you, but now I have a completely valid reason to own a sheer yellow lipstick… Great post!
Jen Clark says
Haha sorry to lower your balance! I think you’ll love how it works! 🙂
Kiss & Make-up says
Heeeeyyyy, what a nice surprise :-O I really like how the combination of DDDevilish and Gold XIXI turned out!
Jen Clark says
I do too! It’s made such a pretty color, and the combination of the matte and lustre formula looked really cool too!
Erin says
I’ve seen other swatches of the yellow and blue and they look much more sheer than yours! Sheerly applied they look quite wearable for everyday, so try that!
Jen Clark says
Oh really? Ok good to know! I’ll have to try that!
Mimi says
I layer lipsticks when I want to use up a lipstick that I absolutely hate. Lol!
According to Mimi
Jen Clark says
That’s a good way to make sure they get used! I’ll have to start doing that!

Sheer green and sheer blue lipsticks have been used for decades as toppers to soften or mute brighter colors.
Jen Clark says
I’ve heard of using yellow but I hadn’t heard of blue! Good to know I’m not totally off base haha
Stella says
Ok…. This is way cool. Because of this, I am going to buy both yellow and green!
Jen Clark says
Yay I hope you love them! I think it’s such a fun idea 🙂
TravelingBlush says

I love blue and yellow as toppers! Estee Edit the new Estte Lauder line has deep yellow and black lipstick shade transformers. Me and my daughter were playing around with mixing colors at Sephora last week. I might like these better because they are sheer. So cool to add variety to the lip colors you already own!!
