Thanks for the great feedback on yesterday’s Aerin Beauty Casis Gloss review, my friend. 🙂
There were quite a few requests in the comments for a full breakdown of the look, so here it is!
I always enjoy switching things up, so for this look, I used products I already had in my makeup bag, but in a slightly different way.
The tweaks? I wore a full-coverage foundation all over my face (not just on my chin, which is what I usually do), used two face primers (a trick I recently learned from a Sephora artist) and added some highlighting and contouring.
Before we jump in, let me just say how this was kind of a long process. There was a lot of layering, blending and buffing from start to finish. Wish I could say that I whipped this out in five minutes, but it took more like 45, LOL!
Not the quickest makeup look around, I know. If I were running to TJ’s to buy Buttermilk Pancake Mix, I probably wouldn’t go there, but for pics or maybe a party, I’d do it again, assuming I had time.
Okay, here we go — all of the makeup products in order, from start to finish.
- Caudalie Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet (face)
- SK-II Skin Signature Eye Cream (lids and under-eye area)
- MAC Prep + Prime Natural Radiance Face Primer (forehead, cheeks, nose, chin and around my mouth)
- BECCA Rejuvenating Primer (forehead, cheeks, nose, chin and around my mouth)
- NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base (lids)
- Tom Ford Brow Sculptor in 04 Espresso and MAC Eye Shadow in Concrete (brows)
- Illamasqua Skin Base Foundation in SB 12 (forehead, cheeks, nose, chin, jaw and around my mouth)
- MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in NC42 mixed with MAC Coral Corrector (to further spot-correct dark areas on my chin, cheeks and around my mouth)
- Bobbi Brown Corrector Concealer in Peach (under-eye area, to cancel out purple from dark circles)
- NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Ginger mixed with a drop of MAC Careblends Essential Oils in Grapefruit + Chamomile (under-eye area to brighten)
- Hourglass Oxygen Foundation Mineral Powder in No. 03 mixed with Hourglass Ambient Powder in Dim Light (under eyes, nose and center of the forehead)
- NARS Light Reflecting Setting Powder (under eyes, cheeks, nose and center of the forehead)
- Hourglass Oxygen Foundation Mineral Powder in No. 04 (around mouth, chin, jaw, outer edges of my forehead/face)
- MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Give Me Sun (below cheekbones, down the sides of my nose and outer edges of my face)
- Dolce & Gabbana Blush in Peach (upper cheekbones, apples of the cheeks)
- Hourglass Ambient Brightening Powder in Luminous Light (upper cheekbones, temples, down the bridge of my nose, on my cupid’s bow and chin)
- MAC Woodwinked Eye Shadow (lids)
- MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Give Me Sun mixed with COVERGIRL Cheekers Bronzer in Copper Radiance (crease, lower lash lines)
- Hourglass Ambient Brightening Powder in Radiant Light (brow bone, inner corners)
- Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Eye Pencil in Jet layered with MAC Pro Longwear Eye Liner in Rich Experience (upper and lower water lines)
- Dior Diorshow Art Pen (upper lash lines)
- Urban Decay De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray Oil-Control (all over my face)
- Chanel Le Volume de Chanel Mascara (upper lashes)
- COVERGIRL Clump Crusher Mascara (lower lashes)
- Aerin Beauty Lip Gloss in Casis (lips)
- NARS Radiant Cream Concealer in Caramel (traced around my lips for added definition)
For my hair, I used a large barrel curling iron and followed the steps in this tutorial for big, bouncy party curls. Then, I slipped on a Sonia Kashuk Crown Jewels headband.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Rebecca Cash says
lovely 🙂
Karen says
Thanks, Rebecca. Hope you’re having a nice day!
Kim says
Oh no, you are the same complexion as I am, so I thought I would be able to copy this, but……..wow…..that’s complicated. You sure look gorgeous though!
Karen says
Hi Kim,
Yeah, it’s super complicated. But there’s lots of places where you could shave off steps. If I were to pare this down, I’d do the primer, foundation, bronzer and a few powders for the skin.
Sunny says
You amaze me every time you do a cat eye! Very sexy, but still soft and pretty! <3
Karen says
Thanks, Sunny! Yay for cat ladies who wear cat eyes, LOL!
varsha says
You are a sweetheart- for responding to our requests so soon ..and for honestly listing out every single product..takes a lot of effort..Thankyou so much Karen!:)
Karen says
Hi Varsha,
You’re welcome. 🙂 I know this one was kind of a long one, but if you want, you could easily nix some things off the list!
How are you doing, btw? And how’s your little girl?
varsha says
Still dont think I will look quarter as awesome as you do hon 🙂 I want to try Llamasque foundation, that would be my first foundation, can you believe..I never liked them much..
I am doing great Karen..little girl is no longer lil sadly, gonna be 2 this May..shes very talkative and girly now 🙂
Karen says
You could totally do it, Varsha! Seriously. 🙂 And ya know, if you don’t like to wear foundation, then you probably don’t need it. Just stick with what you like to wear. Maybe a little powder?
And while the Illamasqua one great, it’s very full coverage, which looks amazing in pics, but might be heavy IRL if you aren’t used to it.
Aww, 2 years in May! Is she a Gemini? Maybe that’s why she’s so chatty.
varsha says
True that about foundation being heavy..I think I’l take a sample from sephora next time..how did you like that covergirl one you used for redcarpet post?
Shes a taurean..true one at that, loves pretty things and art 🙂
Karen says
I quite enjoyed it! It didn’t look like it was sitting on my skin and it lasted the entire day. Drugstore makeup has come SUCH a long way. I love that so many lines offer more choices for women of color, too.
Your daughter sounds like she’s a joy. I know a couple Taurus friends in my life, and they’re a lot of fun. Sometimes hard-headed, but fun.
varsha says
Aah..nice to hear that..I often find it hard to match my skin tone..so I try to avoid the hassle..:p hey btw how many inch curling iron is that Karen?
yes Taureans are sooo loving,I can vouch for that..what are you btw?:)
Jax says
Why the two primers? I would have through they would interfere with each other. Any more details would be gratefully received 🙂
Karen says
Hi Jax,
Ya know, I’ll have to ask the Sephora artist next time I go into the store. I assumed that it mostly had to do with amping up the smoothness of the skin. I do notice that everything does look that much smoother when I used both.
Jax says
Thanks, I’ll have to try it and see what happens 🙂
Virginie says
I think, what makes the difference in all that, are the Illamasqua foundation and the new Hourglass powder!!!! What do you say?
Karen says
Hi Virginie,
Both of those items make a huge difference, for sure. I think the Becca primer also added in an extra something.
Makeup Morsels says
You look gorgeous, Karen! I love the glowy makeup and the curls are perfect. Do you happen to remember exactly what size curler you used?
Kristy says
Woah, Karen! If those were all products in your makeup bag…you must have a jumbo makeup bag.
Karen says
It’s more like a makeup suitcase, haha!
Angie says
You look absolutely stunning! It looks very radiant but natural at the same time.
CrystalCandy says
Your skin look amazing, Karen! I’m really loving your hair like that, too.
Alison M says
See? This is why I love your site. You listen and respond to readers. Thank you!!
Kalli says
That’s a great look! I’m starting to experiment more with luminizers and different colors of blush (my beauty buys have always been more in eye and lip products), so liked seeing how you incorporated different products.
Sarah says
Gorgeous!
Sarah
Agata says
Thanks for the breakdown of the products. Did you apply those primers one on top of the other? That’s an interesting tip.
Claire says
Hi Karen,
Love ya, love the look, but it is CASSIS, not casis. Ahem.. sorry, I just hate to see a nicely written blog tainted by a misspell, especially on the product name.
Cheers,
Claire
Hannah says
Claire,
That’s what I thought of at first, but Aerin beauty actually named it “casis”, not cassis.

Karen didn’t spell it wrong, Aerin just used alternate spelling.
Karen says
What Hannah said. LOL!
Claire says
Love you both, and not to muck the mud even further, no. It is Cassis.
http://www.esteelauder.com/AerinBeauty/spp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=10725&PRODUCT_ID=25173
and in my box, it also says Cassis, with double s.
Karen says
Interesting. BG and Neimans list it as Casis. WHEEE! I don’t have a box and my tube is unmarked. How very Scooby Doo mystery!
Hannah says
Karen you look amazing! I normally take 45 minutes to get ready in the morning, even for simple looks, because I keep stopping and checking to make sure everything’s symmetrical. Eye liner kills me!
Rose says
Love it Karen! You look so beautiful!
gio says
You look gorgeous, love it!
Aalia says
WOW, looks lovely, but I don’t think I have the patience for all that!! Maybe on a sunday if I need to go out.
Vineetha says
I loved how the blush looks on you Karen !
Jennifer says
It really is an amazing look on you Karen! I wish you did lessons in person! I’d so pay for that!
Tigerlily says
Breathtaking!! Both the list 😉 and the results. Your eyes are lined to perfection and I hope to one day apply blush as well as you do!

That crown jewels headband is appropriate, because this routine has reached an epic DRAG QUEEN level number of steps for highlighting and contouring!!
Kare-bear, I <3 you and how -precise- your makeup techniques and routines have become. You are seriously twerking it out, girlfriend. All the hardwork and many steps paid off, your skin looks amazing, like beauty editor airbrushed on the cover of a magazine amazing.
Ankita@corallista says
You look picture perfect Karen!
Karen says
Thanks, Ankita! You’re so sweet.
amandaE says
Absolutely flawless, but still natural. Proves to me I need to work more on my own skills, my highlight/contour never looks that good. Also, I’m going to try two primers tomorrow, I never completely satisfied with any of the 6 I’ve got going at the moment. Maybe the key is to layer them.
Lindsay says
You glow! I’ve been wondering what you’ve changed to recently. It makes you look like you’re in your 20’s. Gorgeous!
Karen says
Thanks, lady. It’s all the contouring…it’s kind of a miracle, LOL! Happy Friday!
Steph says
I think this is my favourite look by you! sfsjfis you look so radiant and amazing!!
Tamika D. says
Love this lip color on you. Fierce, honey! Glad I came across this site. I am just getting into mac and look forward to reading more. 🙂
Azreen says
And here I have discovered the powder! Took awhile, but my ditzy self found it. Just doing my due diligence before purchasing this product. And might I add, you look absolutely gorgeous.
