For many, Sunday is a day of rest. Let me just say that those people are lucky bastards. Except for a few brief beauty breaks, my booty has been planted in the chair at my computer desk all afternoon.
On one of my breaks I snuck away from the keyboard to play with yesterday’s Laura Mercier loot. I took a few snapshots of a shimmery eye done using Laura Mercier’s Fairytale Creme Eye Duo, a combination of two cream eyeshadows, one pink and one violet. Both produce a near-transparent wash of color.
You might be wondering, “Um, is girlfriend actually wearing any eyeshadow at all in this pic?” Yup, I am! As part of the Dreamy Collection, the pink and violet shadows in the Fairytale duo are almost translucent upon application. I think they’re soft and pretty, but if you prefer bold and flashy eyeshadows, this duo might not be your cup o’ tea.
To rev up the color intensity, apply a layer of powder eyeshadow on top of Fairytale. I busted out my Lancome Stylish Neutral Palette. Stylish Neutral’s mauve, taupe and pink shimmer shades, along with the eye duo, worked together like chicken and Kentucky fried — a match made in heaven. The possible combinations are endless. Ladies, you know you can never have too many pairs of black shoes or too many possible eyeshadow combos. The more the better!
For this eye, I wanted to keep it simple. First, I applied Fairytale’s pink shade to the entire eyelid and followed it up with a layer of the purple shade on the lid and lower lash line. Then, from the Stylish Neutrals Palette, I added Click, a shimmery taupe, on the outer half of the upper lash line and the entire lower lash line. I finished the look with a layer of Optic, a light gray shimmer, on the inner half of the upper lash line, and two layers of MAC Zoom Lash Mascara in Zoomblack on my lashes.
Step by step
- Fairytale’s pink shade to the entire eyelid
- Purple shade on the lid and lower lash line
- Click on the outer half of the upper lash line
- Click on the entire lower lash line
- Optic on the inner half of the upper lash line
- Two layers of MAC Zoom Lash Mascara in Zoomblack
To top it all off, I dusted a layer of MAC Beauty Powder Blush in Secret Blush on my cheeks and swiped Chanel’s Rouge Allure in Exquise on my lips. I felt like I was ready to party… well, party in front of my computer monitor!
If you have super oily lids, you might want to apply a primer beneath these Laura Mercier cream shadows to reduce creasing. My lids are moderately oily, and I used Laura Mercier’s Eye Basic in Caramel, but Urban Decay’s Potion Primer or a MAC Paint Pot would do ya just fine, too.
I am so bummed the weekend is over. Seriously, where did it go? The highlight of the weekend for me was hanging out with the neighbor’s cat. He’s developed a nasty habit of visiting in the wee hours of the morning, meowing at the door. He wants someone to party with, sigh. I’m hoping he doesn’t stop by tonight, ’cause these dark circles need their beauty sleep.
Enjoy the last tidbits of your weekend, homie. I’ll see you bright and early on Monday!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I love the natural look! You definitely look ready to spend a day out in the sun, instead of stuck behind your computer. I still have to check out LM’s collection. And boo, I’m going to be in Chicago that weekend of the Gold Digger event 🙁
My weekend isn’t quite over yet, thank goodness! I don’t fly back to SF until tomorrow afternoon. I love being in Orange County; I’m going to get yummy Vietnamese goodies from the bakery to bring back with me 🙂

Wow, I just got the Lancome Stylish Neutral Palette for $10 at my DFC&C!
I’m so glad I did after seeing your post!
Karen says
Hi Lilan,
Fun! Hope the wedding went smoothly. Have a safe trip back!
Karen says
Hi Lynne,
Thanks girl! Happy Monday and St. Patrick’s day, wheee!
Karen says
Hi Karen B,
I like subtle makeup too. I like different types of looks (even big, bold, in-your-face color from time to time), but for certain occasions subtle rocks!
Karen says
Hi Ping,
That cat has suddenly become so talkative, especially at 3:00, yikes!
I was surprised how subtle this look turned out, especially in pictures. You can see the colors more in real life.
Karen says
Hi Sun,
What a find! That’s awesome. I love getting stuff on sale, it totally makes my day. 🙂 You will have a ton of fun with that palette. It’s very versatile and the colors are super wearable! Congrats!
Glosslizard says
That is a wonderful look! Subtle, but brightening! I’ve actually been thinking of going back for that pink Shiseido shadow that I previously deemed too sheer. I’m really diggin’ on the gold (yuk yuk!), no really, I’ve been loving it! But I’m not buying any more pink before Heatherette! The whole reason I’m so stoked about it is that that trio fills a major gap in my pink shadow inventory! 🙂
Fie says
I can has purdee pink? 😀 Very pretty neutral! I must try Laura Mercier one day..only because I heart you 😀
Evil Charity says
Thanks so much for posting this! I picked up the Daydream duo a couple of weeks ago and I haven’t really worked with it much. I really like the idea of using it as a tinted shadow base too. One question though, do you apply the cream shadow with your fingers?
Megan says
This is right up my alley Karen…but I must restrain myself. As previously stated 2008 is the year of the bold eye for me…and I am already rocking the natural look frequently enough. BTW…I picked up some boots eye shadows (with a magnetic palette to hold them) at Target. I just did this yesterday, and today is my first day wearing them, but I must admit that I am impressed. You should totally check them out. Also I picked up the MAC Coulour base in pearl, which I love. I picked up plushlash too…which is okay, but I think I like the Elizabeth Arden better for me. Although I was thinking I might try a coat of each and see where that gets me…
LOL okay so I have trouble staying on topic. Anyway this is a really really pretty look…
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
OH! I visited with those Shiseido shadows this weekend too! LOL! I got my eye on “Tiger Eye”. 🙂 I really like the sparkles in that pink shadow, though. It would be such a pretty wash over the entire lid, perhaps with dark blue on waterline and some navy blue eyeshadow!
Karen says
Awww, you are so sweet, Fie. It’s definitely a look that you’ll either love or hate. It’s not over the top but I think a lot of women wear makeup like this! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Megan,
I really like Boots stuff, especially their body care lotions. I bought a bunch in the UK a few years ago and loved ’em. I’ve never tried their makeup so I’m stoked to check it out. I’ve been planning a target run (the nearest one is kinda far) so hopefully I’ll be able to get my hands on those.
Plushlash is good for certain looks, but Ceramide is just a great all purpose mascara. I’ve been wearing MAC Zoomlash lately. It’s good for thickening and lenghthening but isn’t the easiet formula to work with… and my lashes feel kinda crispy. Eww!
Oh, and YOU ROCK THAT BOLD EYE, GIRL! 😉
TUPRNUT says
Thanks for doing this look – as you know, I’ve been dying to see these new e/s on you. Beautifully natural.
I’m tempted to buy some of these online at Sephora, but this girl’s been celbrating her birthday for the last month, so to speak, and I’m afraid I need to avoid yet another birthday purchase. 🙁 But, soon enough one of these will be mine.
Karen says
Hi Tuprnut,
I celebrate my birthday for a long time, too, LOL! I start one week before and end one week after! And I don’t count it as a birthday unless there’s an ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins in the mix.
You have time to still get these as they are relatively new. I’m guessing they’ll be on the counter for at least a few more months (the Seduction collection seems to have been up for FOREVER) so no rush.
Karen says
Hi Evil Charity,
I use dense synthetic brushes. I used one with a larger head for the browbone and crease application (it’s a MAC brush, the number escapes me right now but I can check when I get home) and one with smaller head for the lid (MAC 239).
Fingers would do ya if you really wanted that sheer, transparent wash of color though!
What color did you end up snagging, btw? Have you paired it with any powder shadows?
Glosslizard says
Mmmm, that sounds pretty! I don’t even want to think about how beautiful the Shiseido pink would be with the Chanel spring quad……
Lauren says
Hey Karen,
I bought Fairytale last week, and I love it. So sheer and pretty for spring.
I also bought some Primer Potion over the weekend, because I noticed that about an hour after I tried Fairytale, it creased majorly… I’m not sure if it was because of the amount the makeup artist put on (it seemed like a lot), or if my eyelids are just oily (possible). But yeah, now I’m confused about how much Primer Potion to put on, should it be a thin layer, or thicker?
I just came across your blog last week or so, and I love it!
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
You have soooo been bitten by the pink bug! 🙂
Karen says
Yay! Have you paired it with any powder shadows yet?
As for primer, I’m not the biggest fan of Urban Decay Primer Potion, but do have it in my makeup stash. I’ve found that using less is better for me. On the rare occasion that I use it, I put some on the back of my hand, and apply a thin layer on the lid with a synthetic brush.
It sounds like you’ll have to do some makeup experimenting, which is FUN! 🙂 Try varying the amounts of the primer to the cream shadow, and perhaps use different application methods (brushes, fingers) until you find the combo that works.
Dunno if you’re a MAC girl, but another primer option is to use a Paint Pot! Lemme know if you have any other questions, and I hope this helps!
