Is Chanel Recycling Good Ideas? Aragonite Glossimer vs. NARS Moon Fleet

Published in: Makeup

Yesterday I almost judged a book by its cover. After reader Mahnaz asked how Aragonite, one of the new Glossimers from the Chanel Les Perles de Chanel spring collection, compared to NARS Moon Fleet, my initial reaction was, “Uh oh! Chanel must have copied NARS.”

NOTE: If you’re interested, you can see swatches of the entire Les Perles de Chanel collection at the bottom of this post.

But then I pulled out both colors and gave the question more thought. Both shades are related, but NARS Moon Fleet, a permanent color from the line, is a sheer and shimmery yellow gold, and I think it looks much darker and yellower than Aragonite does.

What about other possible Aragonite dupes? Hmm… How about Chanel Glossimer in Galactic (circa 2007)?

First cousins, perhaps?

pretty similar … i dont have either though so … uhm. maybe i can haz chanel. :P

    • Karen says:

LOL! I want to that on a sticker. Or maybe get it printed on a cat t-shirt for Tabs. :)

How are the kittehs doing, btw?

      • Nina says:

all three had a bit of a cold. napoleon is still sneezing. luckily anja and linus got off pretty light.

        cat shirt = awesome idea!!!

        • Karen says:

OH no. :( Tabs usually picks up a cold around this time of year; thankfully he hasn’t gotten sick (knock on wood). He’s pretty pissed about having to stay inside (been too cold out), which is why he’s crankier than usual.

Is Napoleon still an outdoor kitty? Tabs is way jealous.

          • Nina says:

not anymore – he stays indoors now and is pretty chummy w/ linus but really scared of anja!

we seem to have attracted an outdoor cat again though – its white and gray and scoffs at meow mix LOL … he doesnt come all that often though!

the weather here has been bipolar – its actually warm today!

im just glad all my furkids are better… :)

          • Karen says:

Oh, that’s good news. Cat dynamics are kinda funny. I would love to introduce a new kitty into the mix, but I’m afraid Tabs will NOT be into that idea. Did you do the whole slow introduction thing where you keep one cat in a room for a while?

Your house is a haven for strays! I love it!

          • Nina says:

when napoleon was still our porch cat in the old house, id catch linus and anja eyeballing him so they kinda knew each other.

thing is, when we moved, we got so busy when we got to the new house that we just ended up throwing all three cats and dog together – and it kinda worked out because they were all getting used to the new place.

there was some hissing involved but that stopped after a few days or so. now linus and napoleon and mojo are buddies (napoleon sleeps beside mojo sometimes) … and anja is our forever huffy cat who doesnt like mixing it up with the boys!

the hubs said – no more cats! so ill have to be content feeding our stray gray outside … :D

          • Karen says:

I bet it helped that you guys moved to a new space — that way all the kids could figure out their positions on the social animal ladder in a space where territory hadn’t been marked yet.

And LOL, why are hubbies like that? El Hub is the same way. I keep threatening to get a cat (cats?) without telling him. He probably wouldn’t even notice!

          • Nina says:

i think its because he scoops the litter box! :D

but he is right — 3 is plenty, for now!

          • Karen says:

Haha, that’s El Hub’s job too.

He’s like, “Double the cats, double the poop. No.”

          • Nina says:

if we get one more kitty (whc wont happen), were gonna need 3 litteboxes… or we need to train them to use the human litterbox! :D

  3. Ithfifi says:

You probably saved a few girls some extra dollars there! Loving the colour, I don’t own anything like that at all ~ shameful!

  4. Rads says:

Oh I want Nakkar! These haven’t reached India yet :(

  5. saku says:

I don’t have either of them. Those two almost look a like. So I may get both from the spring line.

    • Karen says:

Both are pretty for different reasons. Moonfleet’s more gold (looks really pretty on top of red lipstick), and Aragonite’s more of a multi-colored glitter.

  6. Alison says:

I think I may have to get Aragonite when the collection finally hits here this month, thats a glossimer the Perle eyeshadow and the three polishes on my wishlist! My bank account will be cleaned out!

  7. Trisha says:

Argonite and Galactic look almost exactly the same. I think that’s way worse because Chanel should have really known better…

  8. Marina says:

Good thing i have Galactic, can save some $$ :) but it’s definitely worth getting one of these two glosses, they’re both extremely pretty!
And i’m definitely getting Nakkar and the 5-shadow palette <3

  9. Heather says:

Oh, Karen! Give me a good reason NOT to get that Chanel palette! I’ve been scouring swatches everywhere and I’m trying to find a reason to not to out and buy it!

(In all seriousness, though; is there any criticism you have of it that would deter potential buyers? Sheerness? Dupability?)

You rock and Happy New Year!

    • Karen says:

The biggest issue is price. It’s really, REALLY expensive.

Also, I’ve found that application with brushes seems to be a bust — I need to use fingers because nothing else seems to work.

Other than those two issues it’s a beautiful palette.

  10. Kim says:

Aragonite is definitely my favorite. I mean, seriously, look at your pic. There’s even a burst of glowing highlight that says “POW! Buy me!”. :) That said, I’ve chosen not to look at the picture again and therefore not be tempted to buy another gloss!

    • Karen says:

You’re so funny. I’m actually the same way about shoes — if I look away, the temptation disappears. Well, at least in theory.

      • Kim says:

We could probably write a self-help book. But I guess it would really only say “look away!”.

I think it actually means that we’re impulse shoppers, but that’s nowhere near as funny. :)

  11. Joanna says:

I love these colors! They look goreveous, but I’m no sure I can pull off an over-glittery look. Le sigh.

  13. Glosslizard says:

I’m head-over-heels for Ombres Perlees (thanks again to my sweetie)! And really, I just don’t think I’m going to be able to avoid caving on Nakkar. It’s so friggin’ pretty and perfect for spring!

    • Karen says:

Oh nice. A boy bearing Chanel is a sight to behold. :D

Are you using brushes to apply it? I’ve found mine are pretty much useless compared to fingers.

BTW, I hear the siren call of Nakkar getting stronger every day.

      • Glosslizard says:

I’ve also found brushes to be useless, I’m thinking maybe a concealer-style brush might be more effective, but I haven’t tried it yet. I’ve been using fingers or even the included sponge-tip applicators (gasp!) for more concentrated application.

  14. gio says:

The two Chanel glosses look almost the same. I don’t really like it when a brand creates shades that are so similar but I have to admit that they’re gorgeous! You’d only need to buy one of them though, there’s no point in owning both imo.

Thanks for the comparison, Karen! You are awesome, as always!

  16. mahnaz says:

And now I am starting to think that Aragonite/Galactic both look a LOT like MAC lipgelee in Resort life. The shimmer colour seems to be the same but probably not as annoyingly glittery as Resort life.

    • Karen says:

I have Resort Life and the glitter’s much chunkier. It also doesn’t seem to stick to the lips as well as the Glossimers and ends up all over the place. It’s still a pretty color, though, and the texture feels really nice on the lips.

That reminds me, I really need Moon Fleet!

OMG have seen the look life today and I am going to jump out the window (THREAT!!) if I do not get all of it! I got the palette – need it for my blog was the excuse, but I am also in love with the coral gloss, the quad, and the Flamboyante and the nailpolishes in white and peach.

My fiancée is going to have a bad time if he does not hand me his creditcard over! ;-)
