G’morning and happy hump day, lovebugs. 🙂 Some of your comments on Monday got me even MORE interested in the Hourglass Femme Rouge Velvet Creme Lipsticks (click here for the review), so I stopped by Sephora yesterday to get an even closer look.
I took swatches of the whole shebang collection (for reference, I’m an NC35). Take a gander, and let me know what you think.

Readers Klara and Phuongk wondered how Femme Rouge in Noctural compares to NARS Scarlet Empress lipstick and Benefit No Competition lipstick (good call, ladies!); here’s a comparison swatch:

See anything you like? 🙂
That reminds me, I was browsing one of my favorite blogs yesterday and found this article explaining why some lipsticks, like Hourglass Femme Rouge, are using that funky square tip. Turns out that some folks think the shape makes it easier to load a lot of color onto lip brushes.
Hmm… Time for a test, I think.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Hey Karen!
How do you think Icon would look on my NC15? It looks so good on yours! Happy Hump Day lol
Karen says
Hey Racahel,
I personally love the look of dramatic lips on pale skin a la Dita Von Teese! I think you could rock that color in a hot second, but you’d have to really embrace the brightness. 😀
Kim says
See? This is why you rock. Swatching… comparing… researching. I know you get thanks and praise regularly, but you still deserve more! 🙂
And while I’m here, I’ll admit to being way too lazy to use a lip brush when I have a perfectly good tube in my hand, so I’m still saying boo to that squared-off garden spade shape.
Karen says
I would totes be in love with these if they could just change the shape of the tip! The square drives me so cray! Arrrgggggh!
Kim says
I hear you – just looking at the picture is making me twitchy! 🙂
gio says
Thanks for the swatches. Muse and Fever look gorgeous! I’m too lazy to use a lip brush most of the time as well so I’m not too keen on the square shape I’m afraid.
Karen says
You’re welcome, Gio. 🙂
Rinnie says
I just looked at my compact and realized that I’m also an NC35 so you are truly the one that will give me the most realiable references for what colors I need.I’ve been in a bright pink run lately and “fever” looks fun and goes well with your skin. Hopefully then means it would work on me!
Karen says
That is a HOT color. Wear it with cat eyeliner and falsies!
Nina says
Im loving Raven the most! 🙂
Karen says
Raven is very pretty! It’s so dramatic.
Nina says
Coral lippies are the ones that suit me the most… 🙂

You know, I’m happy to shell out the big bucks on a YSL Rouge Volupte or Guerlain Rouge G lippie, but $30 for Hourglass seems a bit steep for me…specially since MUFE just put out 50 new shades with 50% more pigment in 3 different finishes for $19 a pop in their Rouge Artist Intense Line. I like the swatches here, but for 30 clams, I need more shades, more pigmentation, and long wearing time.
Karen says
I gotta say these last a REALLY long time. They’re extremely waterproof and they don’t dry out mah lips.
antithesis says
there isnt a color i dont love in the collection. very nice.
Karen says
I’m glad to hear you like this collection! How do you feel about the square shape of the lipstick bullet?
Lindsay says
Thanks for the additional swatches!
Karen says
You’re welcome!
Alice says
Oh I love the look of Fable!
Karen says
That would be very pretty with a smokey eye.
Marina says
No Competition is my fave lipstick of the moment. Maybe I should take a look at Nocturnal! And Fever looks HOT!
Karen says
You’d probably love Nocturnal! 🙂
Appu says
Nocturnal and Fresco look like my kinda colors! I have never tried anything from hourglass…this might be my first buy 🙂
Karen says
They have some cool stuff, but it’s expensive. I like their blushes and their glosses!
Lauren says
Do you know if there are any dupes for Raven & Nocturnal?
Karen says
Hi Lauren,
Hmm, Benefit No Competition would probably work for Nocturnal. For Raven maybe MAC Cockney, MAC Lady Bug or MAC Russian Red.

I was about to place an order for Icon and Raven before I realized they would make me 60 bucks poorer. Oh sadness! Definitely need to check out for swatches or bust my wallet for new MUFE lipsticks! Thanks for the swatches, Karen! It’s definitely lemming-inducing.
Karen says
I have 10 of those new MUFE lippies! I’ve been meaning to swatch them… hopefully this week I’ll get the time. 🙂
Justina says
Karen! May I request that you do a FOTD with Raven or Fever? They are definitely eye-catching, and I’m curious as to how you’d wear them.
Karen says
Hi Justina!
Ya know, for bright, bold colors like those I’d probably keep the eyes super clean — a matte or satin wash of a pearly beige over the entire lid, crisp cat liner (black for Raven, maybe navy blue for Fever), black liner along the upper waterline and lots and lots of mascara (maybe some false lashes if I have the time).
House of Accessories says
Fever!!
Karen says
That’s a pretty one!
Klara says
Karen, thanks for the swatches and comparison to No Competition, you rock 🙂 The colors look lovely and Muse looks like such a fun summery color.
With colors like No Competition, I personally think the problem is not in the skin tone, it’s more that your skin has to be pretty much flawless for that kinda look to work (which yours is).
Yanna says
I think Fever rocks! But I’m a blonde, so the bright pink would make me look like Barbie I guess..such a shame:) xx
Greets from Belgium
Anna says
I love the color Muse 🙂
