Here’s a quick way to take nighttime smoky eyes from “glam” to “Glam! Bam! Thank you, ma’am!”
Just do this: add glitter. 🙂
Yup! I know, right? What a huge shocker… After you finish doing your smoky eye, if you feel like full-on hot dayum drama, grab a glitter eyeshadow, and pop that ish on your lids.
The $21 Urban Decay Moondust Eyeshadows are great for this.
The Moondust shadows come in a pan and contain more glitter than pigment, so you don’t get a ton of eyeshadow-y color with them, but you do get a lot of glittery sparkle.
Using them to turn a smoky eye into a smokin’ hot smoky eye is as easy as 1, 2, 3…
- Grab a glitter shadow that’ll go with your smoky eye. Here I’m wearing a blue and teal smoky eye, so I’m using glittery blue-green Urban Decay Moondust Eyeshadow in Zodiac.
- Load a flat eyeshadow brush with your glitter, then spritz it with a makeup mist or setting spray (something like MAC Fix+ will work great) to wet the brush head. I’m using Avene Thermal Spring Water (just because it was close by at the time).
- Carefully pat — not swipe — the glitter on your lids in the area around your lash line. Try to avoid dragging it up into the crease, because we want to keep the glitter concentrated on our lids.
If that’s not enough drama for you (I completely understand), finish with false lashes! I’m wearing the Salon Perfect Demi Wispies. 🙂

Hi Karen,
The smoky eyes are absolutely stunning on you. Can you do a tutorial? It would be helpful for the Christmas holidays or any special occasions.
Many thanks.
Karen says
Hi Bearby,
I was thinking about it. 🙂 I might have to do it soon!

DAMN! Wow!

Thanks girl! XOX

Glitter takes everything to the next level.

Definitely!

Those colors look great on you and the Moondust shadow is “wow”. While I don’t think that look will work on an old broad like me, I am interested in getting a shimmer shade from Urban Decay to compliment the Naked Basics (I am really loving it). I want to try a soft, smokey brown eye, and want to add a touch of shimmer. Any thoughts, especially since I now have points to play with at Ulta (also becoming my new favorite stote for beauty)? It’s going to be a nasty day here out East. Go Mets!
Karen says
GIRL, you can totally do glitter. Just keep it nice and low on the lid and the rest of the eye matte and you’ll be good to go. If you are wearing Naked Basics then a silvery glitter like UD Moonspoon would be great. Use a small, flat brush and pressing motions. YOU CAN DO IT!
By the way, Naked Basics is also one of my faves too. I feel like it’s underrated.

I am very, VERY into the moondust eyeshadows and I have a lot of them. Not all, but a lot. They were my first choice all summer. I have hit pan on Solstice and almost hit pan on the white one. I obsessively got the new ones that came out on the UD site.
They are all just awesome.
Karen says
I love them too. Do you have Moonspoon? It’s one of my faves. It’s the silver one.
Jessica says
No, I don’t have that one. I have vortex, shockwave, cosmic, ether, scorpio, solstice, glitter rock, intergalactic, and zodiac.
I really, really wish they had a blue one.
Karen says
Yeah, a deep blue one with a purple reflect would be RAD. I’d be all over that like cats on catnip, MEOW!
Jessica says
Or dark blue with a turquoise shift!

Stunning eye look! <3
Karen says
Thanks!

I don’t have any of the Moondust shadows but that’s a great tip Karen! Your eyes look really hot!
Karen says
Hey friend!
I think you’ll like them. There’s a bunch of different colors but really all you need is one that matches with the smoky colors you wear the most. Smoky eyes FTW. 🙂
What are ya doing for Halloween?
Agata says
Which one would go well with browns or purples?
Me and my boyfriend are invited to his friend’s Halloween party Friday night. I think I am going as Princess Peach and he will be Mario. I have a dress, now I just need to find a crown and the amulet and white gloves.
One of my friends who is pregnant posted a picture of her wearing a black halloween shirt with a skeleton and right where the baby is there was a tiny baby skeleton laying across 🙂 It was so cute!
Karen says
You could do Ether or Diamond dog! Either one would work, but I’d go for purple. Might as well go all the way if you’re wearing glitter, you know?
Aww, that’s so cute that you and your BF are doing coordinated outfits. Have so much! 🙂
P.S. That shirt sounds booth cute and creepy, LOL!

Gorgeous look! And that eyeshadow is really pretty! I’m too lazy for glitter most of the time though, someone needs to invent a glitter eyeshadow that involved zero cleanup and doesn’t drop down onto my face throughout the night 😀
Karen says
If you use the Moondusts with a glitter glue like UD Bondage you should be good! I do that sometimes and I don’t get fallout. 🙂
Tatiana says
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!
Kristen says
Do you know how these shadows would work for people who wear contacts? I love glitter shadows, but I’m always worried about fallout irritating my contact lenses!
Erin says
Gosh, that color looks so good on you! I rarely wear glitter but this is more sophisticated than your average one.

This looks gorgeous!
