Random zombie-related transition…
I don’t know if you watch The Walking Dead, but oh, boy! — I hope you do, because it’s one of the best shows on television.
I think so. I mean…yeah, there’s zombies. But depending on how you feel about that. 🙂
It’s not just about the zombies, though. It’s also about people trying to survive after an apocalypse…but yeah, it’s definitely not a bright and polite British cooking show.
But it is great sci-fi/horror, and I like that. As well as British cooking shows. And Instagram cat videos.
The characters in The Walking Dead are faced with much more than zombies (like desperate, and very bad people). The zombies are just the backdrop to the struggle to survive after we’ve lost our modern conveniences. We watch them struggle with questions of morality and humanity, and I think it’s fascinating and frightening at the same time.
Anywho! The new season just started, along with a new season of The Talking Dead, which is the after show. They bring on actors who star in the show, people who work behind the scenes and celebrity super-fans who all just chat and wax philosophic about the last episode.
It’s a lot of fun! The last The Talking Dead episode starred TWD newcomer Katelyn Nacon, who plays Enid, a young teenage survivor, and Katelyn’s makeup on the after show was on friggin’ point!
She looked absolutely beautiful and very fall. I couldn’t stop staring at her eyes and lips the whole time! She was wearing a gorgeous warm brown matte color in her crease with golds and khakis on her lids and a glossy burgundy lip.
I couldn’t find a good picture of it online, but I still felt inspired to wear something similar today.
I turned to a few old-school faves like MAC Soft Brown and MAC Texture, which I used in the crease, then used MAC Shroom to highlight my brow bone and the inner corners, along with the ever-reliable MAC Powersurge along my lower lash line.
I also incorporated a couple of newer products, like the naughty-sounding BECCA Afterglow holiday palette ($39.50), which has three powder highlighters and Wild Honey and Flowerchild, two of my favorite BECCA blushes.
So I’m wearing Afterglow products on my cheeks and to highlight my skin.
I’m also wearing this new thing I’m kind of freaking out over by PUR called PUR Eye Polish in Caviar.
You can find PUR products at Ulta. Their makeup has been around a while, but it’s relatively new to me, and I haven’t used a lot of their stuff.
The Eye Polishes are their new line of six creamy $26 eyeshadows in earthy metallic golds, rose golds and deep browns. They’re almost like potted liquid eyeshadows, and they have a thin, runny consistency. They set very quickly, too, so you have to work incredibly fast.
Caviar, the one I’m wearing today, is a gorgeous smoky olive with flecks of golden glitter. First time I saw it I was like, “Can I just slather this from my lash line to my brown bone?!” LOL! I contemplated doing that today, but I had errands to run, so I kept it relatively tame on my lids.
One of these days, I’ll go for it, because it yearns to go big, ya know?
If you like khakis and golds, I think you’ll really like it. By the way, you can use it as an eyeshadow by itself or as a base for powder shadows.
Or use it both ways like I did here. I put it on my lids as a base, then smudged a little MAC Reflects Antique Gold on top, and then I packed Caviar in the outer corner.
I swear to gawd, one of these days, I’ll figure this out, but for some reason the glitter didn’t really pick up on camera when I took these pics. It should look much, MUCH sparklier than it looks here.
Actually, now that I think about it, I’m wearing a lot of glitter today — more than I usually do on an average Tuesday, but hey, when you’re feelin’ it, you’re feelin’ it.
Getting back to The Walking Dead now, because it always goes back to TWD. 🙂 In the opening scene of last Sunday’s episode (**SPOILER ALERT**), Katelyn’s character Enid gets some backstory.
In a flashback, we see her with her parents on the road before Alexandria. A group of zombies stumble (literally) upon their stalled minivan, and her parents, in an effort to protect her, are killed.
After witnessing her parents die, she’s forced to leave the minivan, alone, and flee. She wanders aimlessly through the backwoods and empty roads of Virginia, just trying to survive. That includes, at one point, eating a small tortoise…RAW!
I mean, you gotta do what you gotta do, man.
Several times throughout her journey we see Enid write the letters “JSS” with her fingers in the dirt (or with some of the tortoise’s bones!), or on a greasy windshield, and we don’t know what the letters stand for until the end of the episode, when we find out. “Just Survive Somehow.”
It’s real deal!
For some reason, that resonated with me. Obviously, without the zombies, but there have been times in my life when I had to just put the blinders on and be like, “Well, this kind of sucks, but I have to get through it.”
The characters are just so well developed. Give the show a try some time (maybe around Halloween??).
I also hope you give this look a try, too! 🙂

Hi Karen! Your makeup looks so pretty. It’s finally cooling off a bit in so cal so I’m getting pretty excited about busting out more fall colors. Because of that I did a quick drop in to Walgreens and I bought the Loreal Zoe lipstick from that collection they did with the celebrity shades and it’s such a pretty berry red. Regarding TWD I JUST watched the episode on dvr and it was soooo good. I was a little sad I didn’t get my Daryl or Rick fix, but it was still a great episode 🙂 can’t wait till Sunday!!
Karen says
Hi Joyce,
I know exactly what lipstick you’re talking about because I have it too! It’s a beauty. The whole entire red lipstick line they did was great. I wear the Blake shade a lot. 🙂
Glad you were able to catch up on TWD. Isn’t Carol’s character just epic? She’s such an @ss-kicker and now she’s one of my faves on the show. I just hope she makes it to the end of the season. 🙁 You never know with that show. Who is your favorite character?
Joyce says
I know I love the development of Carol’s character. She is an a$$kicker for sure lol. I love the whole gang but my top 3 are Rick, Daryl, and Carol in that order hehe 🙂
Karen says
Those are in my group of faves too. I’m also a huge fan of Glen and Maggie. I hope that the writers keep them around! I’ll be heartbroken if one of them gets written off. 🙁
Joyce says
I love Glenn and Maggie too, basically anyone left from the original crew from back in the farm days are the ones I love most. 🙂
Fancie says
This is such a beautiful look! I love olive and gold shadows so I need to check out those Pur shadows. I’ve never tried any of their products but this is the third time I’ve been these online today so I’m guessing they’re pretty good. The Walking Dead had me a little confused this season at first but it’s turning out to be really good! I’m looking forward to seeing more about the back story of Alexandria seeing what the heck is gonna happen next with those Wolves. That attack was insane!
Tulipthecat says
I saw those PUR minerals eyeshadows online and I really want to get one. I’m planning on going to Ulta after work and also pick up some cat treats. I missed that part that JSS meant just survive somehow. I was too busy trying to figure out the people with the W on their heads and why they were so strong and whether Rick’s friend was one of them because he’s strong too and doesn’t seem to get hurt.
Karen says
How do you feel about glitter? Because if you’re cool with it you’ll love Caviar! I have a few more to test but I’ll have the review up soon. 🙂 (Swatches too of course.) So, the JSS part comes at the end, when Carl goes into the house and discovers that Enid’s left. Do you ever watch the after show? It’s really good!
Chelsea says
This is so pretty, I’ll have to check out that pur minerals product! Definitely my kind of color.
I haven’t watched TWD in a few season. Lost interest, and the gore kind of freaks me out.
Trix is having a contest to find a real bunny to be the honorary mascot of the cereal, so Quincy and I are planning his strategy.
Karen says
Good luck, QB! I hope that when you get the gig that you remember the little people!
So what’s the plan? I hope it involves accessories.
Chelsea says
It will definitely have to be pretty sassy! I plan on consulting with my circus friends, who also tend to be feline and animal enthusiasts, to figure out what will make him really stand out!
He likes to hop in my lap while I’m eating breakfast, FYI, which is adorable.
Karen says
If you end up dressing him up please send me a pic of him! I wanna see.
How sweet that he sits on your lap. I bet it’s such a nice way to start the day. And does he sit there the entire time you’re eating?! Tabs sits next to me, but that’s only because he’s begging for food. LOL!
Chelsea says
Quincy is totally begging for strawberries! I try not to let him stay too long, because I’m usually on the couch and he doesn’t have the most consistent litterbox habits, LOL.
Karen says
That is so cute! I didn’t know that bunnies could eat fruit. I’ve had very limited bunny interaction (just my neighbor’s when I’m pet sitting) and she usually gets herbs for her fresh food.
Kwmechelle says
Fierce, hunty. Like, really, are you expecting? It can’t be legal to look this smokin AND pregnant. I say you give us another pregnancy update to prove you’re really pregnant. ? Geez Louise Finch. In other news, I’ve never seen TWD. But my dad seriously LOVES it. In fact, he says it has a (brace yourself) PLOT. But it’s just never appealed to me. Plus, I’m a chicken. Shout out to reppin VA, though. That’s my neck of the woods. Although the thought of a zombie apocalypse scares the crap outta me. JSS- I like that saying very much. Definitely helpful for life’s less than stellar moments. Who knows? I may watch this show one day with my dad. At least that way it’ll be less scary ?
Karen says
LOL, girl, I am SO pregnant. I ran into my neighbor today and she asked me how I was doing; the first thing I said was, “I’m really, REALLY pregnant right now.” Like, I can no longer see my toes when I look down. It’s like Baby Girl pushed the overdrive button and is now growing like cray cray! I’m huge and getting bigger every day. 🙂 It’s good stuff.
Think of the show as research. If Z-Day goes down, it’ll teach you all you need to know about zombie survival. A big thing is getting out of the city. Gotta do that ASAP when it first hits!
Kwmechelle says
Dude, when a pregnant lady can’t see her feet anymore, she has “officially” crossed over into REAL PREGNANT! I love that you can’t see your feet because it means she’s growing. As my grandma would say, “oh, how sweet it is!” I’ll keep your advice about research in mind. You’re so funny & crack me up. Even if I never watch a day of that show, I’m entertained just “hearing” you “talk” about it. I’ll keep my luggage + a makeup bag handy. When ish goes down & I gotta get outta town, I NEED to look good doing it. #obvs ?
Karen says
Yeah, I can pretty much forget about painting my own toenails. I can’t get to them unless I get into this weird position… It’s all temporary though! 🙂 And I’m so happy that Baby Girl is doing what babies do.
P.S. Don’t forget to stash some makeup wipes in your zombie apocalypse go-bag. SO important!
Pavithra says
I haven’t even read the post yet – just wanted to say you look stunning! Now back to the post!
Karen says
Thanks doll!
Agata says
I don’t like zombies and never watched a single episode of Walking Dead although all my friends love it!
However, the look is gorgeous! I don’t think olive green would look good on me but that Pur Minerals eyeshadow looks sooo pretty!
Karen says
They have other shades in the PUR line! You would look great in the rose gold one, I think!
Stephanie says
My husband and I just started watching The Walking Dead, like two weeks ago? And we’re almost done with season 5, we should be watching season 6 by the end of the week. LOVE it. Everywhere we go we’re like “oh that would be a good tool for Walkers” “Oh that would be a good place to hide from Walkers” haha
Karen says
You guys have been bit (haha, bad pun) by the bug! Have you guys had the “What would we do if/when the zombie apocalypse goes down” conversation yet? We have multiple times. Our plan involves dirt bikes and some improv with the cat carrier. Oh, and leaving for the countryside ASAP.
Stephanie says
Oh yes, we have had that conversation. Complete with who would you want to have in your group? Every time I get frustrated with the Walking Dead (like after they got out of Terminus – don’t want to spoil anything) I was yelling at the TV and then we discussed what we would do in that situation!
Karen says
Well, definitely Carol! Homegirl gets sh*t done!
Lulle says
Beautiful look! I saw the Pur shadows at Ulta a couple weeks ago, but I was a little confused by their texture and the weird silicone applicator. They did look very sparkly and luminous.
Oh and I love your top in these pictures!
Karen says
They do take a little bit of getting used to at first because they’re so unconventional. The silicone applicator’s OK but I prefer applying with fingers more. Try them sometime, they’re really lovely!
Did you get anything at Ulta while you were there?
Carol in a Page says
Whenever I do a bold lip, I go very minimal on the eyes and viceversa, but this post has inspired me to experiment more. You look gorgeous!
Kiss & Make-up says
Okay, so I read the intro but then skipped the rest because spoilers right, ugh! I loooove The Walking Dead! Watching the latest season on Netflix now, almost done! But I don’t want to know what comes next yet, so yeah, I’m just gonna go now, bye!
😉
LindaLibraLoca says
My husband love the show, but I´ll stay away from anything with Zombies in it.
But “Just Survive Somehow” can translate to several aspects of the life, even though there are no zombies around. Or tortoises.
Brooke says
I completely agree, Karen! Her makeup was beautiful, however, I feel like her hair was a little too much for my liking and took away from her beautiful face – just my opinion 🙂 JSS is now my daily inspiration lol
Denise S says
Very pretty! I’ve been wearing metallic golds/bronze/greens with matte brown in the crease a lot lately. You can then wear any color lipstick with that eye look! I’m really enjoying TWD this season. I felt sorry for Carol she was just relaxing into domestic life when all hell broke loose. Rick, Carl, Michonne and Carol are my favorites . Can’t wait to see how Rick and the others get away with from that Zombie hoard!!
Marina (Makeup4all) says
You look gorgeous!!!
Speaking of the series, I am catching up on my guilty pleasure, Hart of Dixie. Only 4 episodes left, heh..
Catherine Martinez says
love this red lip look!! I recently did a red lip look because I love red lipstick I posted it on my instagram @catthe1st. Your look is fantastic I’m going to need to buy some of the products you used. Bless you and have a great day 🙂
Lisa says
This is a beautiful makeup look. I have never purchased anything from Pur minerals, but i think I will pick up a few of the new shadows. I also watch and love all of your YouTube videos ?
