Hey, girls. It’s Monday and I’m feeling kind of blah, so to improve my outlook on this most dreaded of week days, I tried this really fun blue/teal eye with Sonia Kashuk’s Blue Lagoon Eye Shadow Quad ($9.99).
I used all four colors in the Blue Lagoon Quad, along with MAC Indigo Eye Pencil. Here’s the color map and shade placement I used:
- Warm brown matte: browbone and crease
- Grey-blue shimmer: crease
- Gold-teal shimmer: lid (applied with a wet brush) and on the lower lash line
- Dark blue: outer third of lid and along lower lash line
- MAC Indigo Eye Pencil: upper and lower waterline
This was a very bold look for me to wear to work, so to tone it down a little and keep it from looking too clubby, I went with light beige and brown cheeks.
What do you think of the MAC nude lip?
- MAC Subculture Lip Liner
- MAC High Tea Lustre Lipstick
- MAC Nymphette Lipglass
The rest of the look…
What I used over the entire eye
Lashes
- Two coats of L’oreal Voluminous Carbon Black mascara
- One coat of Shu Uemura Precise Volume Waterproof mascara in Black
Brows
To treat my undereye circles
- MAC Select Moisturecover Concealer in NW 25
- Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder #2
Face
- Becca Luminous Skin Color tinted moisturizer in Nut
- Becca Stick Foundation in Coffee
- Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder
Cheeks
An option with this look would be to start with a layer MAC Cash Flow Paint Pot beneath the teal shadow on the lid. I tried it the other day while I was playing with the quad, and the layering produced a flash of color that changed from green to gold to teal.
Now that I have my teal blue eye in place, I feel better able to make it through the day. How goes it with you, pretty ladies? What kind of eye look did you wear today?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Tania says
Hey Karen! I like this look it looks like my Steamy eyeshadow from MAC which I love. I didn’t wear any eyeshadow today cuz I was in a bad mood. I’ll probably go home and play with my Shadowy Lady and some others.
Karen says
Hi Tania!
Aww, why the bad mood, homie? Mondays make me grumpy too sometimes, so I know how you feel. I hope you are feeling better. 🙂
I don’t have Steamy but I’m thinking I need to get it now. When I get home from work today (agh! whenever that is – looks like I’m gonna be here late) then I think I’ll play with some MAC colors too. I’ve been really into blues and purples lately.

Karen , You look AWESOME!!! The MAC nude lip is great! Has a nice shiny punch to it instead of the usual boring beige nude lips…

Hi Indian Girl,
Thanks hon! Do you have MAC High Tea? I got it in the Finery set for Holiday 2007 and I totally forgot I had it until this morning. I am *loving* it!!!
What is your fave nude lip combo? I’m always lookin’ for more.
Christine says
It’s great to see you in a bold eye look!
Karen says
Hi Christine,
It’s a big jump for me but I kinda like it! I get lots of inspiration from you, that’s for sure.
Happy Monday! 🙂

hey karen,
I just had a green metallic Milani eye liner and mascara. Kind of low key today but I felt cute cuz I had on a new harajuku lovers hoodie and matching headband on!
Karen says
Hi Grace,
Pretty! Sometimes simple is the way to go, methinks! I really want to try Milani eye liner but the drugstores nearby my house don’t carry the line – pooh. Your outfit sounds cute, btw!
Amanda says
wow, you’ve got skillz-eyeshadow blending skillz! I love seeing your color maps, since I just don’t know what to with more than 2-3 colors of eyeshadow, one of which would be used as liner, LOL. LOVE the lips too-so pretty, great balance to the eyes. This morning I just did a quick wash of shu ME beige 800 (metallic khaki-pink) and some mascara, then did malibu barbie bright pink lips. 🙂
Megan says
Hey girl… I like this look. I have a couple colors that I got at Target from the Boots stuff and I did a similar eye with those before.
I’ve been rocking a bare face and bedhead all day. I had a killer sinus headache all day…so I pretty much got up…called work said I would be late…took meds, went back to sleep until noon…called work…told them I wasn’t coming, caught up on work e-mail, ate a bowl of cereal, took more meds and went back to sleep. UGH…I just woke up again and the headache is almost completely gone. Time for meds again…
Karen says
Hi Amanda,
Thanks darlin’! OOOOH I loves your look for today… Malibu Barbie pink lips gets me every single time! So hot!
To tell you the truth I was a two color gal for years. Doing the FOTD’s for the blog has really helped me expand my idea of what strategic placement of eyeshadow can do you for you. I still have so much to learn but it’s kinda fun seeing what you can do. Glad to know that the eye maps help… I myself am a visual learner!
If you don’t have High Tea then get is ASAP! 🙂
How’s your Monday been? Was work okay?
Karen says
Awww, Megan,
I’m sorry you are feeling bad. Sinus headaches are awful. Gotta give you props for sending a comment despite your impaired state. 🙂 YOU ROCK!
OH, this is off topic, but lately I keep “visiting” with Tuberose Gardenia at the Estee counter. I keep thinking about it and I sense that I’ll have to get the smaller bottle for myself soon.

Lovely colors! I like the sparkly nude lip too!
Today I started out with a subdued look (I was volunteering in Impus Major’s classroom today) using Laura Mercier secret eyeshadow in pink and LM metallic eye color in gold. I did a fancy lipgloss by topping an ultra-sheer layer of Style Minx with Blue Comet dazzleglass, blending, and then layering Sugar Trance over it all to tone down the brightness a bit!
After my classroom gig, I pumped up the eyes with some teal-green (UD’s Flipside shadow) in the outer corner and then blended Lemon Sugar from the inner corner toward the outer. Used Strawbaby lipstick topped with Astral for a cheery, but not too bright, lip! I went for contoured but subdued cheeks… had to show some restraint somewhere!
Ha! Too much fun with makeup! 😀
Karen says
Glosslizard!
I love all the colors you used today. Sounds like a happy, bright look for a Monday. Strawbaby with Astral sounds like such a pretty combo…
I haven’t broken out my LM shadows in a while. You just reminded me that I need to give them some lovin’. 🙂
Anything exciting happening on your end?
Christine says
Aww, thanks, girl 😉
You are looking tanner – are you? Gotta love California weather!
Mariah says
Very pretty!! At first glance I thought you’d used the new Mutiny pigment! This is very cute. Is that first shade a cream shadow? And aww, this totally makes me want to run out and get Nymphette l/g. It’s sooo puurty!
Great look Karen!!!

Love the look! Do you like Subculture lipliner? I need a good pink lipliner and can’t decide between Subculture and Dervish?
Allie says
hey karen,
i really love reading your blog and this look was pretty. today i was off from work (yay!) and heaped in between errands i hung out with a long lost friend (okay so not so long, the last time we hung out was in february but we used to work together so we saw each other practically everyday) anyway, i did a brown eye look using mac honey lust in the inner corner, satin taupe in the middle, and brown down on the outer corner and crease (i was going for a gradient look), lined my eyes, used mac dollymix blush, with up the amp! lipstick and negligee lipgloss over it. mondays are blah to me too but makeup always brightens up my day! what do you do by the way?
Meaghan says
Hi Karen-
Eghh Mondays are awful! Hopefully you finally got home? Love the look today! You definitely do look much tanner? What do you think of the Becca line? I just picked up MAC’s Mineralize Satinfinish today as I’ve been using Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer (which I love more than anything else out there but it makes me breakout and I’ve tried both the oil free and regular versions) as an alternative. I have a fabo Laura Mercier eyeshadow that reminds me of your look (called Mermaid)…I love greens and blues but never seem to wear them.
So back to you being tan…have you ever thought about doing a bronzer comparison for us?

Yah, Strawbaby works so beautifully with Astral or with Blue Comet! Such an agreeable lippie! 🙂
Nothing much is happening now, but this weekend is jam-packed! A dojo seminar with 3 visiting senseis on Saturday, then off to Santa Rosa for a family get-together on Sunday!

To die for lips!!!
I’m wearing blue peep as liners; layin low all over lid up to browbone, then some tan shimmer shadow from Missha ( a korean brand), bronze powder on crease and rice paper for hilite.

Karen says
Hi Christine,
You are welcome! 🙂 I always enjoy your FOTDs; one of these days I’ll be brave enough to try one of your pink/orange/yellow eyeshadows.
I guess I’m a little tanner. Been running outside a bit more to try and rescue the (rapidly declining) fitness. Plus I had to switch tinted moisturizers; my color is halfway between my spring and summer shades and I’m haven’t felt like blending the two.
Hey, aren’t you in the middle of finals?!?!
Karen says
Hi Mariah,
Thank ya, girl! 🙂 Naww, no Mutiny Pigment…it’s all Sonia’s doing! That first shade would be an awesome cream shadow, but alas, it’s powder.
OMG – you don’t have Nymphette! GUUUURRRRL. It’s a fool-proof pinky-gold and is one of my all time fave Lipglasses (can’t even count how many tubes I’ve gone through).
Karen says
Hi Vivien,
I love Subculture liner. It’s very close to the natural color of my lips so it’s kinda my fool proof liner. I don’t have Dervish, so I can’t really comment on it… but, I can say that my favorite pink liner is MAC Pink Treat Cremestick liner. You can check out a swatch here. It’s a bit more pink than my natural lip color so it does seem to make anything I use with it a bit more pink. Hope this helps!
Karen says
Hi Meaghan,
Aren’t they though? Yup, I did make it home without staying too late. I even managed to make it to dance class (yay!), too.
I don’t have a lot of Becca products, but what I do have I *love*. The tinted moisturizer is a great; it’s a bit more sheer than the LM, which is good for summer. I also have her Stick Foundation and I love it too. It matches great with my skin tone, doesn’t break me out, and is easy to use.
That sucks that your LM Tinted Moisturizer makes you break out. I’ve talked to so many makeup artists and they pretty much all agree that Laura’s is the sh*t. I’m jealous that you have Mermaid! I’ve been lemming it for awhile but haven’t gotten around to picking it up.
LOL, this is so sad, but I think I’ve got like, two bronzers. I know! Both Guerlain one and Nars Laguna are on my list and I’m going to wait until I get back from vacay to get one; that way I’ll know it’ll work with my summer time color!
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
WOW! That’s a lotta senseis in the house! It sounds like you’ll be getting your workout on… gotta love that. 🙂
My Strawbaby needs some good, good loving. I should bring her a friend – a friend named Astral!
Karen says
Hi Pia,
Cute! Blue liner is relatively new to me and girlfriend it’s like a whole new world! I need me some Blue Peep!
You will love High Tea. It’s pretty on it’s own too, with just a touch of clear lipglass.
Hope your week is off to a great start!
Glosslizard says
LOL! Cue Barry White… oohhhh, yeeeaaaaahhh!
vivien says
From the swatch it looks similar to Dervish, so next time I go to MAC I’m definitely going to compare them and see which one looks better on my lips! Thanx Karen!
Karen says
Hi Allie,
It’s good to meet you. I love brown eyeshadow looks for work, so I will have to try your eye. I don’t have Honey Lust, so I just looked it up on the website. It sounds like a really pretty neutral that needs to get into my eyeshadow collection ASAP! 🙂 BTW, I like Dollymix too. I used to be so scared of it, but it really is one of those MAC gems.
Doesn’t it kinda suck when you leave a job and you leave friends behind? One of my best friends still works at my old job, and I used to see him and laugh with him EVERY DAY. Now I only see him every few months. E-mail, phone and texting are just not the same, sigh. Glad that you got to hang out with your friend, though, because that always brightens a Monday.
Girl, I have like 20 jobs. Okay, not 20, but a few. I work part time in publishing, do freelance writing and this blog (the most fun “job” of them all). What do you do?
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
LOLOLOLOL!!!! Gawd I love Barry… there is no other singer who can adequately convey lipstick lovin’! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Vivien,
You’re welcome, girl. Lemme know which one you end up getting. Maybe I’ll end up buying Dervish, too. I have a thang for pink lipsticks, and chances are I have a shade (or twelve) that will match it. 🙂
Parveen says
so cute love it
Christine says
Hey girl,
C’mon, with skin the color of yours, it is BEGGING for some pink/orange/yellow!
I just bought a new bottle of foundation, and I’m hoping I don’t get much darker (because I’ve already tanned up a bit since I bought it), LOL.
One last final tomorrow, then 12 days off before summer school!

Karen says
Hi Christine,
Good luck on your last final. *sending good test vibes your way*
Okay, one of these days I will try it! Gotta remember to take my own advice (it always washes off!).
Which foundation did you get?
Karen says
Hi Karen B,
How fun! I would totally wear Garden Party to a garden party, too. Whose party was it? And, more importantly, what did you pair it with?
Right now I would probably not be the best person to go to an actual garden party. Everything’s blooming her and my allergies are CRAZY!
Karen says
Thank you, Jamie! Are you a blue/green shadow kinda girl?
Karen says
Thanks Parveen!
Christine says
I just got a replacement bottle of SFF in NC30 (my staple), since after what, two years? I’m almost out!
I think I still have NC35 though, and plenty of it. If I get darker than NC35, I’ll cry.
I make silly faces in the mirror whenever I’m unsure about a look. I don’t know why, but it totally helps!
Natalie says
i really love this look. great for warm summer weather. i also think the eye diagrams are incredibly helpful!! thanks!
Karen says
Hi Christine,
Wow, that’s amazing! Don’t you love it when find a product that you can stay devoted to it for years? That’s when you it’s the shizz.
Hope you are enjoying your post-finals evening!
Karen says
Thanks Natalie!
This is a new look for me so thank you for the feedback. I am so glad the eye diagrams are helpful! I’ll keep doing them…
Hope you’re having a good week. Anything new/exciting going on with you?

Today I used MAC Aquadisiac as the main color on my eyes…the rest of the eye is mainly whitish Love it!
I matched the bright color with MAC angel Matte blusher and MAC nude lippy, Blanketty.
Karen says
Hi Retail_therapy,
What a pretty look. I don’t have Aquadisiac in my stash yet but I will hopefully be adopting it soon. What do you usually pair it with?
