Believe it or not, this is a tabby’s happy face…
Tabs was thrilled for a number of reasons today.
First, he got to hear one of his very favorite songs, Chamillionaire’s Ridin’ Dirty, which I pumped on iTunes while doing this blue and green eye look with the new Dior $60 Blue Lagoon 5-Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette.
He always stays in the room for Chamillionaire, unlike Maroon 5, of which he’s not a fan (don’t know why, but he always leaves the room when Adam Levine starts singing). I think he thinks of Ridin’ Dirty as his personal anthem.
Picture it, Tabs strutting his stuff while it plays in the background. 🙂 Totally works, right?
Second, Tabs is a snob, or as he likes to put it, has “a taste for the finer things,” like high end makeup, Dior being one of his favorite brands.
Third, this Blue Lagoon is also a bird of Paradise, as in the new Paradise summer collection, of which it’s a part.
Birds? Paradise? Tabs?
The palette probably made him hungry for dinner, but it made me hungry for all of the fun places I could wear it this summer. 🙂
You might be thinking, “but it’s too shimmery,” and well, shimmery shadows that flock to fine lines are for the birds. Nothing makes me feel more “Holy sh*t! I am officially a cougar!” than seeing a frosty finish highlight the fine lines around my smiling eyes. But Dior’s Blue Lagoon doesn’t do that.
These shadows have more of a high-shine sheen than a high-wattage shimmer and reflect loads of light without the frosty effect that can highlight fine lines. I think that’s what makes this palette great for all ages, from teens exploring mom’s makeup collection to mature ladies who love brights.
But my favorite thing is how easily these colors blend, even with their powerful pigments. Sometimes, because of the time and effort it can take, my wrist will ache when I’m trying to blend rich blues and greens like these.
This look took me about two runs through Ridin’ Dirty to blend, so maybe about 10 minutes. Not bad. And I didn’t have to contend with any fallout.
I gotta say, when Dior gets it right, they really get it right. I think I can even talk my friend Jen and my mom into letting me do their makeup with these shades (and they aren’t big fans of blue shadows or green).
Best for: gals/guys who know their way around blues and greens and are looking for a summer splurge, or the cosmetically curious beginner who doesn’t mind spending a serious chunk of change on makeup.
PRICE: $60

Awesome overload! Teh Tabs, Dior and great pics! I love this post so much! 🙂
Karen says
Thank you, Sarah!
Teri says
So pretty Karen! Love the pic of you both, looking so happy, haha! I honestly prefer shades a bit darker on me but the palette itself is just really gorgeous, the whole collection is such a winner!
Karen says
Hi Teri,
It’s all Tabs, LOL! He always steals the show. 🙂
What are you enjoying from Bird of Paradise?
Sunny says
Whoaaa you rock blue, girl! I might personally prefer one more medium shade, but you made it work anyways!
Karen says
Thanks, Sunny! Happy Thursday.
Melody says
Blue!!! Perfect for coming summer. I like light green eyeshadow, combo with coffee and golden shimmery color, which is my go-to eye make up. This Palette is adorable.
Karen says
Hi Melody,
Yes! I love blues on the eyes during the summer. Do you ever wear yours with gold or bronze shadows? I think that’s my fave way to wear blue.
gio says
What a gorgeous palette! The colours are so pretty and summery! I love the look you did with them.
Karen says
Thanks, Gio. I know you love your brights and had a feeling you’d like this palette.
How are things on your side of the world?
attika says
I DIE! this is such a gorgeous palette that screams summer. I LOOOVE the promotional images of this collection too. anyway what mascara are you wearing here? killlller lashes!
Karen says
Hi Attika,
Thank you for noticing! I’m a little obsessed with lashes, so it’s nice when someone says something good.
I’m wearing Chanel Le Volume de Chanel in the original color, black. It’s awesome, and my favorite high-end mascara at the moment. Here’s a review if you’re interested:

Look at that handsome boy! And I like blue shades on you.
Karen says
He’s a very husky boy! I love him so much.
BTW, thank you for sending that mix! I really enjoyed it.
inaya says
your skin looks AMAZING! what did you use?
Karen says
Hi Inaya,
I’m wearing Bobbi Brown Stick Foundation on top of MAC Strobe Cream. 🙂
Kim says
Put on your surprised face. My first thought was “sky high lashes, sister!”. But the shadows come in a close second. 🙂 I actually love them in the pan, too. They remind me of a comfy, down comforter at a seaside resort. Though I’m not a blue/green shadow kind of girl myself, I think they look great on you!
Karen says
My friend, that’s Chanel Le Volume doing its thang. SERIOUSLY YOU NEED IT YOUR LIFE LIKE NOW.
Oh, what I’d do to be wrapped up in a down comforter at a seaside resort right now.
Kim says
I know! This is definitely top of my list. I also meant to ask you if you’d tried the waterproof version of Faux Cils. I’ve never had much luck with waterproof and I love the original FC but with summer coming up, I could use some waterproof mascara.
I hear you. Everything is coming back to the sea today. A coworker got me looking at seaside castles in the UK (inadvertently). And I’m apparently the last person in the world to realize that Alnwick castle was used for Hogwarts. Still, sea, cliff AND castle. How do you beat that, really? 🙂
Karen says
Ya know, I don’t think I’ve ever tried the waterproof Faux Cils! I’ve been cheating on my Faux Cils hard core with Chanel for like the last year. I have an appointment to try some YSL tomorrow, so maybe I’ll ask the artist to hook it up, haaah!
Okay, I didn’t know that fun fact about Hogwarts either, so we’re in the same boat. Have the boys read the Harry Potter books?
Kim says
Oh, cool! If you do, let me know if you like it. 🙂
Yes, I read the series to them and they’ve also read some on their own as they’ve gotten older. We just started it again (taking turns reading out loud to each other at night). They’re great for kids because the vocabulary is very straight-forward but the stories are still well written. I love the books. 🙂
Oh, and Happy Friday!! I don’t know how I forgot it was Friday!
Arianne says
I love that happy tabby face! <3 TABS!
This colour palette is really fresh and it works incredibly with your tanned complexion. 🙂 Also, you have lashes FOR DAYS in this post. What mascara are you wearing?
Karen says
Hi Arianne,
Thanks for noticing the lashes! You know I get obsessed over them, LOL. I’m wearing Chanel Le Volume in this post; two coats, I think.
Hi to Scherbs…I hope she’s being extra diva today.
Emma Minter says
LOVE this pallet. This is now on my ‘must have’ list along with a Nars Duo.
I just did a review on some Revlon colour quads on my Blog http://dollhousebeautyblog.blogspot.co.uk/.
I would so much appreciate people taking a look and leaving some comments 🙂
Emma
Karen says
Cool, thanks Emma.
Petra says
OMG you look gorgeous with that blue eye-look!
Karen says
Hi Petra,
It’s all Tabs, I swear! 🙂
How are you doing today? Wearing any fun colors?
Petra says
Not today – was rushed this morning so I just buffed a little “color” from the naked basics palette o give my eyes some shape. But I have been obsessed with silver lately, combo with green or purple. Really digging the effect with my blue/grey eyes.
Tabs is gorgeous too. So sad I can’t have a kitty of my own…
Karen says
I’m looking for an awesome silver to rock my world. Something almost metallic. If you have any recs, please let me know. I feel like doing a mixed metal eye look. 🙂
Aww, and Tabs says thanks. I always want to take credit for his good likes like a stage mom, haha. Since you can’t have a kitty, you can have official “Aunt” status with Tabs. He’ll be your unruly, but lovable, nephew.
Petra says
Really honestly touched and honoured to be Tab’s Aunt <3
I have one from the body shop (not great – a little grainy, quite some fallout and a little tricky to blend – but the silver is quite good actually)
but I saw a video from Makeupgeek about their latest batch of shadows and Graphite looks very promising. I haven't gotten around to place my order yet but when I get them I will let you know how they are!

Danielle says
LOVE THIS PALETTE! And Karen, this eye makeup really suits you!
Karen says
Hi Danielle,
Thanks, lady! I can’t wait to wear it to TJs, hahaha!
Hope you’re having a nice Thursday so far. What’s going on for the weekend?
Agata says
This palette is amazing and it looks stunning on you. And considering my recently discovered love for blue/green/teal I’d love it too but $60 eyeshadow palette is def not in my budget at the moment unfortunately…
Karen says
Hi Agata,
It just launched so it’ll be around for a while. 🙂 I kind of love that you have a teal obsession. We’ll have lots to talk about this summer, LOL! It’s one of my favorite colors too.
BTW, congrats on the new car!
Agata says
Thanks, the new car is great. My hubby is really excited, hasn’t stopped reading the manual ever since we got it, lol.
This palette is really beautiful, you should do a break down or a tutorial on how exactly you applied the eye shadows. I was at Ulta yesterday and I broke my no eye hshadow policy to get the LE Lorac palette, it’s amazing. I also fell in love with the new Urban Decay eyeliner in green (The Freak, I believe). I will have to get it next time!
Karen says
That’s so exciting! You guys will have to take it on road trips this summer. 🙂
Would you believe that this eye look only took about 10 minutes? The shadows are THAT easy to blend. I’ll see if I can re-create, the step-by-step tuts take sooo long, but if I have extra time…
I had a feeling you’d eventually cave in with your eyeshadow ban. 😉 I used to try to exercise restraint, but really, it’s no use. Are you wearing your new LORAC palette today?
Agata says
Today is a no make up day since I work till late and 4am tomorrow. I will have to take a pic of the palette and send it to you cause it’s gorgeous, it has blue and peach and mint and teal and bronze. All perfect summer colors!
Karen says
Mint is huge this season. I’m happy that it’s getting so much love (especially with nails…green nails are my fave). Gah, work! Are you working this weekend too?
Kiss & Make-up says
Oooh and here’s that awesome palette we saw yesterday! It looks lovely on you, Karen.
Karen says
Yup, yup. 🙂 It’s a beauty. How often you use Dior palettes (on yourself and on your makeup clients)?
Beauty Frontline says
ohhhh blues 😛 soo lovely karen 🙂
Karen says
Happy Thursday!
Gowthami says
ohhhhh !! blue girl 😛 lovely karen 🙂
Karen says
Hi Gowthami,
Thank you!
Deb says
Karen, THESE are your colors! With your skin tone and brown eyes these look so much more amazing on you than browns and pinks. Rock that Dior!
Karen says
Hi Deb,
Aw, thanks! I love pink and brown, but blues like this are fun too.
What do you think of the palette? Is it something you’d like to wear?
Deb says
Yes, I would love to wear it. But I have blue eyes and very fair skin and I think it would be too much.
gabby says
I love those colors on you!! What foundation and gloss are you wearing? You look flawless
Karen says
Hi Gabby,
Thanks, hon. 🙂 I’m wearing Bobbi Brown’s Foundation stick for foundation and a mix of two Dior Addict Glosses on my lips: 433 Delice and 643 Diablotine.
Are you a Dior girl, too?
gabby says
I am trying to venture more into eyeshadows and I really like the Dior 55 color eyeshadows. I really really love the Dior lip glow. I definitely want to try those glosses now. I still can’t get over your skin though, looks amazing!
gabby says
I meant to say 5 color eyeshadows haha
Karen says
Oh, I LOVE the Lip Glow! I have it on my desk right now, as a matter o’ fact! 🙂
I just started wearing the Bobbi Stick Foundation, and I really love it. One of the artists who works directly w/Bobbi, Marc Reagan, raved about it and so I caved even though I was really happy with my previous foundation routine (a mix of Illamasqua Skin Base and NARS Sheer Glow). The Bobbi stick is AMAZING. It is so flexible and really, really fast. Plus the finish looks great both in pics and real life. I have a review of it coming soon.
Oh — another thing I forgot to mention earlier. I’m also wearing MAC Strobe Cream layered underneath and Hourglass Oxygen Powder on top to set.
What foundation are you liking these days?
Aida says
Well, I love blues on my brown eyes, I love Dior shadows so there seems to be only one thing to do… Buy it! lol Thanks for the swatches and review Karen. I was on the fence on this one as Dior has really blew it last spring/summer, so I only ordered the Nude Tan in Pink Glow from the new collection. Now I can order it knowing the shadows are so nice :). I’ll definitively enjoy them all summer long. Say hi to Tabs from me 🙂
Karen says
Hi Aida,
Oh nice. I’ve been wearing the Coral Glow lately and love it. I think the Pink Glow needs to come into my life.
BTW, I saw your new wreath on instagram and it’s so pretty! Great job.
Aida says
Thank you :). I just twitted you a picture of a silver I’ve always thought was amazing. It’s from Tarte’s True Blood palette and it’s gorgeous. Hope that helps :).
Karen says
Thank you! I have that palette around here somewhere. I’ll have to dig it up and play with the silver…maybe add a gold liner or a bit of gold in the outer corner. Yay for eye shadow experiments! 🙂
Kim says
The picture of you and Tabs is SO adorable! I love that Tabs likes “Ridin Dirty”! He is such a cool kitty.
Karen says
Thanks, Kim. 🙂 He’s a sweet kitty boy when he wants to be, and he’s kinda thuggish too! 🙂
Do you have any pets?
Steph says
Looks absolutely gorgeous on you!
Anitacska says
Very pretty. Reminds me of the Tom Ford quad I got last year. Probably don’t need both, but of course that doesn’t mean I don’t want this as well. 🙂
Chelsea says
This is fabulous on you! A little too much color for this lady though!
And I can see Tabs riding around in a car listening to Chamillionaire!
Elsa says
Your tabby is super adorable :). Wow Blue Lagoon looks gorgeous. Makes your brown eyes pop. I have to get it. Dior been making a HUGE dent on my wallet lately…they have such amazing products and lovely colors. How can one resist?…:) Love your eye look. A tutorial would be wowsome 🙂 Thank you. xo, Elsa
Jennifer says
Super pretty! I love this look on you but you need to know how to apply eye makeup for these colors, like you said… the mere novice wouldn’t be able to make it look as effortless!
