Man, there’s like some weird temporal vortex Arthur C. Clarke thing going on inside the Sephora by my house. Today I meant to just run in and get a tube of NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, thinking that I’d be in and out of there in two swishes of a tabby’s tail but, uh, that totally didn’t happen.
I don’t know how long I was in there, but it was long enough to add all of this to my ever-growing makeup wish list…
And look who was performing at the Benefit counter!
Cute, yah? 🙂 I discovered today that I have a soft spot for striped orange circus kitties… You really do learn something new every day.
Have you added anything new to your makeup wish list lately?
The New York Times Dialect Map
Thought you might find this interesting: this New York Times Dialect Quiz really works!
I did it the other day, and it was spot on for me. At the end it shows you three cities you might be from based on your speech patterns.
It’s just a series of questions (took me about 5 minutes), like, “how do you refer to a large group of people?” Do you say “y’all” or “you guys”? And how do you pronounce “aunt”? Do you say “ant” or “ont”?
My three cities were all in Northern California, which is where I’m from! And they’re all near placed I’ve lived. Fremont is the town next door to Union City, where I grew up, and Santa Rosa is a few miles north of where I live now.
Weird!
This validates it: I am a California girl through and through. 🙂
If you take the quiz, let me know if it gets it right.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Funny, I did that quiz too and almost all of the US was blue for me! I only had little hot spots of orange in various places all over the country… Weird. I definitely want to test that mousse transformer foundation from Marc Jacobs! Wonder how it would do with oily skin?

Karen, I don’t know where the right place to comment on this is, but every time I click one of your links on bloglovin, I get “404 not found”. So, I’ve just been coming direct to your website. I don’t know if anyone else had that problem… maybe I just need to unfollow and refollow…
I’m intrigued by the Becca pressed Skin perfecter. I’d love to see a video of your favorite skin perfecter-like products 🙂

All righty then, that was scary accurate! Mid Maryland, with some good old Pennsylvania thrown in.

Ultimate gloss looks great! 🙂 Tempting list

I was born & learned to talk in the south, had a western Mom & southern Dad. I have spent most of my life in the west. Split the difference & the quiz says Des Moines, Madison or Anchorage. All are too cold as is where I live now. Interesting survey!

Hey Karen – the dialect quiz was spot on rural East Texas for me. And I thought I was so sophisticated.
Anyway – I wanted to warn you off the Becca Ultimate Coverage foundation. I love most Becca products, but it’s a mess. I bought it for the promised full coverage and natural look, but it’s got a weird finish – matte yet greasy – and it looks very fake on. The only way to make it look good is to buff away neary all the coverage and then what’s the point? Also it transfers and smears like crazy and puddles in pores and fine lines, even with primer.
I’m anxious to try the Marc Jacobs foundation – I’m a tough color to match so I’ve got to check it out when it gets to my local store. Please write it up if you try it. Thanks!

Love the outfit… Where is your jacket from?

I got Santa Rosa, Sacramento, and Fremont which is totally correct! I was raised in Petaluma and went to college in Sacramento. Funny how accurate this is for us Northern California girls!

Whoa!! I live in Csnada and took the quiz, and it got the closest American city to me!! Very cool!!!
Chris says
I took the quiz and was blown away by how accurate it was. Kinda scary but also cool at the same time.

I took that quizz but I got like 3 that were almost 100% different. I’m from the same area of Nor Cal but I got one in CA and I think Chicago and something from the east coast. I’ve been mistaken for a Chicago native and a Boston native. No idea how that happened. I spent my first 25 yrs in Nor Cal!
As for the lovely pretties, I need those Becca items and the LM Baked Shadows.
Sarah says
So funny! I live in the suburbs of Chicago and the quiz said my dialect is from the Chicago area. Chicago was red/orange and the rest of the map was completely blue! Loves it
Sienna says
How did it know? I grew up in Houston, Texas, and that’s the result I got. I had no idea Houston had such a distinctive dialect. I also decided to check out my least similar dialect – it’s Miluakee. Interesting stuff.
Lena says
seriously, karen, this was a fun quiz.
i got new york, and rochester (close nuf, i live in the new england area for a few years), another listed is saint louis, interesting since i’ve never been there.

Fun quiz! My results were accurate. Pretty makeup, too. Its probably a good thing that I’m an hour away from the nearest Sephora or I’d be in there spending money all the time.

This is the story of my life! I actually keep a list on my phone of all the goodies I want to check out the next time I go to Sephora lol. I have that Marc Jacobs Lux polish and it is my all time favorite polish! It’s so pretty and looks great year round. The YSL gloss Volupte is totally on my list too! Those and maybe the new Marc Jacobs foundation. Hopefully I don’t find a share match because I really dont need it lol. I could definitely stand to check out those Becca glosses though. They look really nice!
Abby says
I think that Marc Jacobs Nail Polish and the YSL Lip Gloss are beautiful! I really want to try a dior foundation and Nars Lipstick in Jungle Red!

That MJ nail lacquer is beautiful! I really love how large all of his compacts are! You feel like it will last you awhile!
That quiz was super fun! I am a born and raised Atlanta naive but my parents are from the Midwest so I don’t have much of a southern accent and people often ask me where I’m from after hearing me talk. This quiz predicted San Antonio, TX and Orlando, FL!
Alison M says
Becca Full-Coverage made my list too! I haven’t tried anything from the line yet because it is (so sadly) no available in my area. I need to seek out the closest counter/Sephora that carries it and take a road trip!
Marina(Makeup4all) says
I have just bought my first Marc Jacobs nail polish in Lola for my Birthday tomorrow & can’t wait to use it 🙂
Rhea says
those laura mercer shadows look great, i really want to try out that plummy/purple shade!
Iris says
I’m not from the States but I got northwest/west US and Hawaii as most similar to my dialect. 🙂
Sephora wishlist: I have my eye on the Marc Jacobs new matte lip gel in Gossip.
Iram says
Damn that Marc Jacobs nail polish is breathtaking.

This quiz is spot-on for me. Detroit, Grand Rapids, Toledo – we Michiganders have some very distinct differences! I’m from a couple hours north of any of these places, but those are the closest major cities.
I usually just wear a BB cream (which I like, but it’s not HG status or anything) but I need to buy a regular foundation, but I’m so picky and hard to match!
Nadia A says
Hi Karen! I took the dialect quiz. The answers matched exactly where I was born, raised, and currently live, which is Orange County, California.
Cheryene says
Hi Karen,
Whoa! The quiz said I was from Albuquerque,NM and it was totally right! It also came up with Amarillo and Lubbock Texas. I’ve lived in Albuquerque all my life and went to Amarillo once with my parents in like 1976. Never been to Lubbock though.
I need that Laura Mercier Aubergine shadow….off to Sephora this weekend.

This quiz was dead on for me and I’m always called out for having a Chicago accent. Awesome quiz with legit results. Thanks for posting.

Dead on… It caught my North Louisiana accent! By the Karen, your blog is everything!
