Doing more (makeup) with less; here’s a full face — eyes, lips and cheeks — for $9.85
To promote the release of Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 7, Federated Media Publishing, Inc. (my advertising partner) is sponsoring a giveaway for us. One lucky reader will take home the new Windows Phone 7 (a $500 value), and all it takes is a comment on “doing more with less.”
Today I did more with less by doing my makeup for less than $10! 🙂
- One lucky reader will take home the new Windows Phone 7 (a $500 value).
- Click here for the official rules, but to summarize…
- Leave a comment at the bottom of this post describing how you “do more with less.” You could describe how you use your favorite multitasking makeup product, how you do your hair and/or makeup when you’re in a huge rush, how you save money on beauty supplies — basically anything related to doing more with less (and, contrary to my examples, it doesn’t have to be beauty related).
- Deadline to enter is Monday, November 29, 2010.
- The winner will be chosen at random.
- You may enter one (1) time per day until the end of the giveaway, but your entries must be substantially different each day.
- No purchase necessary. Open to legal residents of the 50 United States (D.C.). 18 years and older. Void where prohibited. Click here for official rules. Sponsor: Federated Media Publishing, Inc., 2 Harrison Street, 7th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94105.
Oh, I mentioned at the top that I did more with less today by doing my makeup for less than $10. It was actually $9.85. All of the color products are from N.Y.C. New York For Color.
They aren’t gonna win any awards for slick packaging, but I love the quality of their textures and colors (for $2-3 each). Honestly, I can overlook a lot for that price, and get this: their products are also cruelty free!
N.Y.C. New York Color products clockwise from bottom right: Cheek Glow Powder Blush in Park Avenue Plum ($3.04), Lipstick in Caramel ($1.89), Eyeliner Duet in A Place in the Sun ($1.89), Brow/Eye Liner Pencil in Dark Brown ($1.14), Lengthening Mascara in Jet Black ($1.89)
Here’s how I did this $9.85 look featuring bronze/black eyes, plum cheeks and bronze lips
Eyes: Apply the bronze liner from the N.Y.C. New York Color Cheek Eyeliner Duet in A Place in the Sun ($1.89) to the lid, crease and lower lash line; use a finger or a brush to soften and blend out the edge of the lines. Then, with the black liner from Duet, line both the upper and lower waterlines to add some drama. Open up the eyes with two coats of N.Y.C. New York Color Lengthening Mascara in Jet Black ($1.89) on lashes, and then frame eyes by filling in brows with N.Y.C. New York Color Brow/Eye Liner Pencil in Dark Brown ($1.14).
Lips: Add color to your pucker with the shimmery bronze N.Y.C. New York Color Lipstick in Caramel ($1.89).
Cheeks: Wrap up the look by sweeping N.Y.C. New York Color Cheek Glow Powder Blush in Park Avenue Plum ($3.04), a sheer matte plum, on the apples of the cheeks.
Swatches from left: Lengthening Mascara in Jet Black, Brow/Eye Liner Pencil in Dark Brown, Black liner from A Place in the Sun Duet, Bronze liner from A Place in the Sun Duet, New York Color Lipstick in Caramel and Cheek Glow Powder Blush in Park Avenue Plum
I can’t wait to read your comments. 🙂 Good luck!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

My “do more with less”: having really great skin products. that way i can fix the root of the problem and won’t have to cover it up with as much makeup later on. :]

When i am running out of time, I just line my eyes and use The Body Shop’s lip and cheek stain. That thing is quite the multi-tasker 🙂

I’m disqualified off the getgo, hailing from that country to the north of you, but I do more with less by not washing my hair as often. Instead I rinse it with hot / cold water, condition the ends, leave the conditioner on for a while and wash it all off at the end of the shower, mostly to give my hair a bit more control over the oil situation and to drag out the usage of my beloved Sebastian Drench set as long as I can.
Mindee Larsen says
Lately i haven’t had much money for a new moisturizer or foundation so i purchased a tinted moisturizer , which has both in one! Its so beautiful and lasts all day =)
Kae says
I do more for less by putting my hair in a bun after blowdrying it and skipping the flat iron. After 30 mins I have natural waves with only the residual heat from the blow dryer!

When I go on trips, I bring more products that can multitask. For instance, Stila’s convertible color for lips and cheeks, cream shadows that serve as a primer and color, etc. That way I can carry less around with me ^_^

I like to put Cetaphil cleanser on my face first followed by baking soda for an inexpensive yet effective cleanser and exfoliator! My other goto product is this amazing blackberry liptint that I picked up on etsy for three bucks! It smells divine, gives me beautiful color, and it’s all natural!
Tracy Hathaway says

I do more with less by doing my own mani/pedis! I can’t say there’s a huge difference in quality, plus, I’m way less ticklish than if someone was doing it for me. It’s basically free… as long as you don’t count my addiction to scoping out (and yes, sometimes purchasing) new nail polish collections.
Janet says
I do more with less by going a few days in between washing/conditioning my hair. It means less time straightening, less water used/faster showers, and it takes me longer to go through my hair products!

Stef says
I do more with less by multi-tasking with body lotion. Rub a tiny bit more than needed on my legs, massage excess into my cuticles, and lastly, run my moisturized hands through the ends of hair to tame flyaways. 3 tasks, 1 product, 1 minute!

My hair is so long and thick, it could take forever to straighten or curl and it never stays in anyways. I use Goody spin pins to put my hair up! Within 5 minutes I will put my hair up in a chic bun and with only 2 pins. Definitely less hair products and less time! 🙂

aclearcutsign says
Whenever I want to try a new makeup or skincare product, I wait for sales and/or check for coupons. I’ve learned to check the drugstore weekly ads for BOGOs.
jj says
I´m using skin care products only from companies like lavera or weleda, because they´re of a very high quality and really improve the look of your skin. I rather spend a little more on my skin care regimen than spend the rest of my money on expensive foundations and concealers!
And I also make my own facial mask out of fresh ingredients (they work way better than bought ones). The same applies to my peeling.

Keeping my hair short makes me use less shampoo, hairspray, hair dye, etc. Not really an option for many, but I can have my hair washed, dried, and spiked in less time than it took me just to dry my long hair. Buying tubes of hair dye and mixing it with developer is a better option than box dyes. I’m getting 5-6 dyes out of 1 tube now that I’ve found the perfect dye.
Melodyy says
I do more with less when I’m in my service club at school, the money that we fundraise can go to so many different charities that I try to do so much more than the amount that we have.

Batiste dry shampoo is a lifesaver for when my hair needs a boost but I don’t have time to wash it!

I’ve never used an organizer before. If there’s anything I need to note down, I type it in my cellphone. Everything from to-do lists, reminders, homework, birthdays, events, grocery lists, etc. I think this saves a lot of money and paper instead of purchasing organizers or using up a fresh new piece of paper for every new list. 🙂
Nika says
Oops, please disregard this entry. Just read that this contest is open only to US readers. 🙁 Sorry!
Sara says
save the environment, please reuse backs of blank papers, also RECYCLE glass bottles, paper, and especially plastic items. . unplug electronics you’re not using and also reuse glass bottles, just clean them. wait too pee in the shower because every time you flush the toilet it is 6 GALLONS of water you just wasted. Take baths instead of showers if possible. When you’re brushing your teeth turn off the water! In between shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and shaving your legs turn OFF the water. Don’t use paper towels in your own restroom use just regular fabric towels.
save the environment and save the bucks!

I do more with less by making sure that I really focus on the thing that I do. For example, do a perfectly smokey, smudgy eyes, then I can skimp over the rest of my face. Or splurge on a really good anti-oxidant face cream and buy drugstore face wash and sunscreen.
Debbie says

I do more with less by basing LOTS of dishes on beans and rice (hooray for 20-lb bags from Costco). It’s surprising how far that stuff goes, and how easy it is to change it up.

I use my lipstick as blush sometimes! It not only saves money, but it saves space when I travel.
Kim says
Wow, that’s a pretty awesome “more for less” makeup look! 🙂
I usually concentrate on my grocery shopping since that’s my biggest bang for the buck. I look through the circular and plan meals for the week based on what’s on sale. I also try to get coupons for the sale items to increase the value. Our local grocery store doubles coupons up to a dollar and also give $.10 off per gallon of gas for every $50 spent in the store. It can really add up if you’re a smart shopper. I save an average of 40% on every trip plus the gas savings. 🙂
amy says
Mixed up my own lip glosses, vaseline, peppermint oil and mix in one or two of my way too many Bare Escentual eye or blush collections..

styleezta says
I do more with less by swapping my clothes on swapstyle.com…that way I’m saving money from buying new clothes and getting rid of old clothes that I don’t like anymore 🙂
Danielle F. says
I do more with less by recycling my meals into something new. For instance, if I make a ham or a whole chicken, after two days of eating what I made, I turn it into something new, like soup stew, sandwiches or freeze it for later creations. It is much more economical and so much less wasteful to cook food in this way, plus it gets you thinking and being creative with culinary choices! Yay!
Anna says
More with less – mixing foundations with lotions! I mix my tinted foundation, which is a bit heavy feeling, with my daily plain white moisturizing face lotion, and VOILA. super lightweight but effective tinted foundation. I’M A GENIUS =D
aclearcutsign says
I do more with less by investing on quality clothes/shoes. For classic pieces like a coat or a pair of leather boots, I check for workmanship (so it lasts for a while), comfort (money down the drain if it makes me not want to wear to it) and design (not too trendy so it can last various seasons).
Debbie says
I do more for less with my brita water filter. I’d be so lost…. and thirsty without it!
vonnie says

Gail says
I do my own manicures & pedicures so I save tons of money & its quite relaxing.
Stephanie says
I love this post. I am the queen of “do more with less.” I don’t have much money, so I shop at thrift stores for all of my basics and even much of my fancier items. But, I buy my, one or two, signature pieces at regular stores. When I mix these together the outcome is awesome. People at school used to ask me where I bought my clothes, and I always gave the same response – second hand. Now they ask me how much it costed – usually 2 or 3 dollars. This always gets such a good response, because people always assumed that I spent hundreds of dollars on my outfits.

I do more with less by “shopping my stash.” Once a week, I go through my makeup stash and use something I haven’t used in a while. I immediately fall back in love with the product, and I no longer have to urge to shop for new makeup. It’s a win/win situation 🙂

Rica says
Although everyone swears by CHI 99 Iron Guard or other high end heat protectant, I, on the other hand, like to use a cheaper alternative -Tresmme heat tamer spray. It is a multipurpose products because most heat protectant are only meant to use for either dry hair or damp/wet hair. So you would need one more blow drying, and another one for curling or straightening. This is a multipurpose product because you can use it for blow drying, curling, and straightening your hair. On a hot summer day, you can also spray some to protect your hair colour! I can do more with less with Tresmme heat tamer spray =D.
Lisa says
This sounds backwards, but I try to do more by focusing completely on the task at hand, rather than trying to multitask. I find it takes longer when I have multiple things to do at the same time.
Tarren Roberts says
I do more with less by: using my foundation as a concealaer, using an old mascara wand/hair gel to tame my brows instead of going out and buying clear brow gel. Using shimmery light eye shadow shades to highlight my eyes and cheeks.

My super-fied beauty tip for making it work on the cheap? MULTI-TASKING PRODUCTS, yo. Highlighter is my best friend. On days when I don’t have the time or patience for concealer, I use it to add life to my skin by dabbing along my nose, under my eyes & so forth. Add a smidge of drugstore mascara, a little flush to the cheeks & voila. Work ready in under 5 minutes. I also love Shu Uemura’s liquid gel blush. I use it as blush, lip stain & even a pinch for eye shadow. Chanel blush also does wonders as blush and a lovely eye shadow.
In my unfortunately, untimely unemployment currently (;___;) I’ll invest in one or two high quality products (ie, highlighter or a single blush) and make it work in various ways to compensate for my lack of products.
Verna says
I use more for less by putting powder foundation with concealor.I use an all over coloring powder on eyes and cheeks and then black liner and mascara.I fill my brows and finish with my lipstick and I am all done.
Trisha says
Do more with less? I’ve learned to love my naturally curly hair so I don’t have to spend a bunch of time each morning blow drying it straight. That means more sleep!
Amber says
I do more with less by shopping for cosmetic and fashion pieces that can multi-task! I love choosing knit oversized sweaters than look good with leggings or denim jeans, or chunky booties that look great dressed up in a black slip dress or dressed down with leggings or a skirt. I also love using my MAC Blacktrack Fluidline as a liner as well as using it to fill in parts of my brows when I’m in a mad dash and also sometimes use it to create designs such as leopard spots on my eyelids if I’m doing some crazy zany makeup. I also like to use my facial wipes to wipe down my makeup brushes, lipstick, and shadows to keep them clean on the go! 🙂 Thanks Karen!
Erin says
I love reading about beauty products and have spent a lot of time reading blogs and watching youtube videos to learn about the best drugstore beauty finds. I save a lot of money by learning from other peoples’ experiences and finding cheaper products that are still high quality. I recently have fallen in love with the NYX line and I print off Ulta coupons online so I can get fantastic deals on these products.

Since I can’t afford to buy new makeup these days, I’ve been using up what I already own, including nail polishes. I’m having a lot of fun remembering what colors I have and also mixing things up!
Onegreatsmile says
I do more with less by having all my email accounts from several different providers forwarded to one master email account and then that master account forwarded to my cell phone as text alerts! It allows me to only have to check one email account (so to speak) and determine who needs an answer right away and who can wait. There’s never any spam because I use a completely separate account for all my entry forms, registrations, etc and that mail never makes it to my phone! Plus, I have google voice which sends calls anywhere I want (so I reduce my cell minutes used) and it even emails me my voicemails.
If I wanted to, I could get away with just my laptop and blackberry, but I don’t’ want to add my old landlines to the landfills!!
Valeria says
Even though I’m a makeup junkie, i do not own much makeup. Ironic ah?…Im in a rush everyday so my robot-like routine includes (dont be surprised!)
-Clearasil Tinted Moisturizing: works perfeclty as a foundation for me
-MAC liquid eyeliner
-Wet ‘n wild mega last lip color in Think Pink
– Maybelline Mousse in Rose : for cute cheeks
-Maybelline MAscara Extra Curve
And that’s basically what i do everyday except that i change the lipstick color (for other color in the same brand)
Easy right?

I use makeup for more than their intended purpose: such as using a bronze shade as a eyebrow highlighter or eyeshadow for blush.

I do more blending with less tools by using the BeautyBlender to blend out all makeup on my face with the exception of my eye makeup. It blends corrector, concealer, foundation, bronzer, blush, highlighter, etc. while making it look like part of your skin and keeping coverage. And without the use of five different brushes to be cleaned afterwards!

I do more with less by purchasing my low-end cosmetics and supplies at Walgreens and I always save my packages and receipt…they refund you if you don’t like it after all! I usually go to QVC for my higher end cosmetics…they will refund you without any hassles, including postage….down to the bottom of the jar!
Emily says
I’m a big fan of trying something a few times to see if I really want it. Like visiting sephora maybe once or twice and trying the product on (especially perfume) to see if I really end up wanting it or if it was just a lemming. Most of the time, after the second or third time I’ve tried the product, I’m over it and don’t want it anymore.
Connie says
I do more with less by using lip balm for (almost) everything! Beyond the usual lip moisturizing, I use it on my cuticles, use it as a highlighter, set it down as base for some eyeshadow/liner and use it even to keep frizzy hair in place. It’s magical!
Allison says
My do more with less is to save time and money by using just conditioner to wash my hair. I’ll use a gentle shampoo once or twice a week, but the savings in time and styling product are great.
Ariel says
I buy a lot of my clothes at consignment shops. A lot of them still have the tags on them and are in brand new condition. I recently got a pair of leather JCrew loafers, never worn for $20 and a winter Anthropologie jacket $25 at a used clothing store. Yay!

I am trying to do my part to recycle more. I’ve been bringing my recycle bags to the store and market rather than picking up several more plastic bags. Some stores will give you $0.05 off your purchases for each plastic bag saved by bringing your own bags.
Doing my part to recycle more and saving some money in exchange. 🙂
Melodyy says
I love my Benefit PosieTint to use as a lip stain and as a cheek stain. it’s wonderful ! (:

I do more with less by striking the perfect hairbun in seconds with a doughnut that goes underheath my hair… bye bye messy hair under the rain! 🙂
Peggy says
I just bought an inexpensive, but well known brand of foundation and lipstick. It cost nearly $20.00 on sale. Lipsticks have more then doubled in price since my last purchase, your N.Y.C. prices are unheard of where I live.
Michel says
I do more with less by splurging on staple beauty products and trying trends in the drugstore ranges. By using brands like NYX, NYC and Wet n’ Wild, I can try metallic shadows, hot red lips, lilac gloss, etc. without breaking the bank. I also love to do more with less by letting some products multitask–olive oil for a hot oil treatment and cuticle oil, sugar to exfoliate, etc. Sometimes the best (cheap) alternative is just a room away! 🙂
Lily says
Today I did more with less by using my concealer as a nude lipstick, hid my blemishes, and got rid of my dark clrcles, also drew a picture using it but that was an emergency 😀
Elle says
I do more with less by using my favorite Trader Joe’s Conditioner as hair creme when I am in a rush or run out. My hair always turns out soft and completely frizz-free! It also doesn’t hurt that it is only $3 a bottle!!

Another way I do more with less? Ramen noodles. I’m what some would call a “struggling writer” or a “starving artist.” That means that I don’t have many funds set aside for food. So I’ll spend a dollar and get a few packs of Ramen. Tah dah! More food for less!
Yes, it’s not beauty related, but whatever. 😉
Paula Rose says
I always find I do more with less when I travel! This applies to my make-up as well as clothes. Everything gets paired down to bare essentials that are multitasking powerhouses. The upside is that I always come back with an appreciation for these things.
Danielle F. says
Another way I do more with less is by buying a super multitasking makeup product. My fav in this category is Benefit’s High Beam. It is my cure-all for tired days and no makeup days. It is my lazy way of looking fresh, even if I don’t feel 100%. I love using it to highlight my cheekbones and browbones—it just perks you up! You can also dot a smidgen into your inner corner to make your eyes instantly pop. Doing so many things with one product is definitely more with less.
June says
My ‘Do More for Less’ of the day! It’s getting really cold and dry where I live now, so I’m using Elizabeth Arden’s 8 hour Cream as a
1. hand moisturizer
2. dry, rashy elbow healer
3. lip balm
4. face mask treatment (it’s kinda gross at first, but you get used to it and your skin is super soft afterwards!)
5. eyegloss
6. cheek highlighter
7. feet moisturizer before I go to bed
What’s more – you need just a little product each use – definitely a $$ saver! =)
Tahnee says
I only have so much time to do my makeup in the mornings, before I have to get my girls ready for school…so i quickly did my foundation and used a matte bronzer…which I used to contour, as well as blush!!
Liz! says
I love doing more with less by using my Stila convertible color on my cheeks and as a lip tint. It’s time and money saving!
Liz Diaz says
For a quick look when pressed for time, I use my MAC mineralized skin finish all over my face and on eyelids, use my bronzer on my eye crease, some nice winged eyeliner, mascara and I’m out.
Jenn says
One thing I do pretty much all the time is french braid my hair in the morning. The braid is cute, then later in the day I can let it out and have rocker waves! For makeup if I’m rushed I use UDPP in “sin” on the lid, and dust a pink eyeshadow over it. Some liner, mascara, and peachy blush (yay Nars orgasm!) and I’m out the door! The look is simple and natural, yet pretty and it has a “glow” quality to it.
kali says
This is funny because I literally JUST did a project for this phone. I’m and Advertising major and for my class, all the groups (or agencies) had to to an entire campaign for this phone -we presented the projects this week. Learning about the phone has definitely made me want one!
My favorite multitasking product currently would have to be the Fresh Twilight Freshface Glow. I can use it as a highlighter for my browbones, cheekbones, or mix it with my moisturizer to give my entire face that extra “boost.”
When I’m in a rush, I usually just tie my hair back or put it in a loose bun. Makeup-wise, I usually just do my eyebrows and swipe on some mascara. If I’m lucky, I’ll get in some lip gloss.
How do I save?? I’m ALL about bargains and scoring good deals on everything I buy -including makeup and beauty supplies. For drugstore products, I always use membership cards (like the CVS Extra Care Card), I always print coupons in the store (printing station/price scanner) or online, I skim through magazines and newspapers for manufacturer’s coupons (Sunday paper is the best), I wait for products to go on sale, and I always ask for rain checks (for new products that I may want later down the road.) And with all of that, I stack my coupons on top of in store sales and usually come out wtih amazing deals. Sometimes I pay $1-$2 for loads of products.
For example, on a somewhat recent trip to CVS, I scored a drink, chips, 2 Maybelline concealers, 2 false lash sets, Revlon nail polish, and L’Oreal Hair Dye for ONLY $1.63. I technically would’ve gotten it free though because I forgot I had a gift card!
For high-end items, I wait for sales (if the products are limited edition/seasonal/non permanent) or I wait for things like the F&F sale (Sephora.) I also shop around -I don’t limit myself to just one place. Places like beauty.com are ALWAYS having 20% of 10% off your order deals. I also look for deals from RetailMeNot. Also, I buy things when I get GWPs or samples -at least you’re getting something back right??
Anyways, hope this helps someone looking to save! That would be pretty sweet if I won too. =P
P.S. Oops! I just realized that I only have to answer one -not all.
Mandy says
Love my straightener. It can do so much and it is only one tool. Probably the one styling item I could not live without.
Charan says
I do look for coupons or sale in the drugstore and it just gives me huge thrill to get it at a bargain rate 🙂 .
As for makeup, on a lazy day, all I need is concealer, mascara, bright pink lipstick and cheek stain, and I ready to go out.
SOL says
When I’m in a hurry , I would just apply concealer on my blemishes and dark cirles, apply eyeliner on the bottom waterline and fix my hair in a messy bun ^^.
aclearcutsign says
I like to use a flat iron to finish off my hair whenever I go out, but when I’m in a rush, I’ll just blow dry my hair straight and make sure I have a hair elastic and/or bobby pins with me just in case of frizzies later.
Kim says
Hi Karen! Just wanted to say that I think it is awesome that you are showing people how to look great on a budget. I sent this to my 14 year old sister to show her you don’t need the fancy Sephora makeup to do a great everyday face. I haven’t really given NYC color a chance, but I will now. What other drugstore brands do you like?
Em D says
I do more with less by skipping all the flat iron madness and embracing my wavy hair- sometimes it’s easier not to fight it!

I do more with less by doing my gift shopping (and regular shopping) using sites like Jasmere (http://www.jasmere.com/r/7777a1ed?l) and Groupon, which let you buy discounted vouchers for products to use online or in the community. However, as with any shopping site, I’ve found that it is also important to only buy what you will definitely use (what good is a discounted voucher to a restaurant if you aren’t interested in going to it?).
Marie says
I do more with less by going paperless for my bank statements 🙂 I hate shredding those things, anyway.
Megan W says

Tiffany says
I dont use hair products. I use lotion to moisturize my hair and to make it sleek and shiny~!
Lauren says
Shopping for beauty products (particularly drugstore!) is a test of my patience. Drugstore makeup is usually more expensive at the drugstore than places like Target and Walmart, but they also go on sale more often and usually with a better deal if you pounce at the right time: BOGO free, 40% off or 50% off. I make a “drugstore wishlist” of all the things I want to try and check the weekly ads every Sunday to see if there are any good deals, if there are, I actually do the math to work out how much each item will cost and how much I’m saving. Manufacturer’s coupons are great and I horde them for occasions like this and then I go and buy my wishlist items, sometimes making multiple trips in order to use multiple coupons. 🙂
Valentine says
Thankfully my laziness goes hand-in-hand with doing more with less: I usually skip blush and just apply my tinted lip balm to the apples of my cheeks.

I did more with less today, by not washing my hair and doing a poof with my bangs! It was “flat” looking because I washed it the night before, but washing it again isn’t good….so a quick and simple solution and took me less time to fix my hair! Just tease, spray, pin and go! 🙂
Emily says
I wash my hair every other day at most. It saves water, time, shampoo/conditioner, and gel. Besides, it makes my hair less damaged, so I can go longer between cuts.
likeramona says
I do more with less by combining sale/clearance prices w/coupons & coupon codes for most of my shopping. I receive text messages from department stores to help save on the cost of clothes/shoes for my family. I shop resale/thrift stores, use freecycle, ebay, & craig’s list. I NEVER pay full price for anything outside of my utilities and other home related costs. I even reevaluate my spending on home & auto insurance every year to see I can get the same coverage at a better rate.

I’m doing more with less by doing a “project pan” idea with my bath and body products. I have so many body washes, lotions and perfumes that I’m not letting myself buy any more until I’m down to 1 body wash, 1 lotion, and 4 perfumes (I kinda think it’s ok to have several different scents for different days and occasions). By doing this I’m saving money by not buying whatever new think piques my interest, and I’m also really enjoying the products that I do have. Yay saving money!

Olive oil! I use it as everything. Instead of a facial scrub, which I use weekly, I mix olive oil with some plain white sugar. It’s moistuirizing, delicious, and super cheap. I also rub it on dry spots, which I have a lot of in the winter, instead of my typical expensive body cream. I warm a little bit in my hand and rub it through my hair for added shine, instead of my usual addiction, the Frederik Fekkai olive oil shine mist. Also, after warming it in my hands I pat it on my cheeks. It adds an instant dewy glow! It’s amazing during the cold winter.

I have worked and lived in a national park for the past 7 years. The nearest “real” town with drugstores and grocery stores is a 6 hour round trip! I have learned to buy in bulk- on sale- to get me through the winter season when I can’t get out (no cars!) for 3 months. Even when I can drive, spending the money on gas isn’t economical.
I have learned to use household products (olive oil, sugar, yogurt, honey) to make skin care products. It seems silly to drive for 6 hours just to look at makeup, so I make those rare trips count!!
Those of us that live here trade books, clothes, even products to relieve the boredom that can occur when that hauling urge hits.
It’s amazing to learn what you can live without when you can’t get to it!!

I do more with less by buying used CDs for cheap online or at goodwill. One quick stay in my computer to add the songs to itunes and a quick backup on my external harddrive and it’s ready to pass along to someone else. You can get used CDs shipped for less than $5, which really adds up when an itunes album is $9.99+. It may not be instant gratification but the extra $4+ in my pocket per album is worth the wait. Plus, because others do the same thing, you won’t have to wait for months to get a used version of the latest album.

Doing more with less is the only game in town for me – I live paycheck to paycheck, don’t have a car payment, have the very lowest tier for every excess (such as my plan for my very old, decided non-smart mobile phone) and delegate most wishes to the wish list. Which then gets put in a drawer and never looked at. Most days I find it freeing, other days it’s very frustrating.

My best friend taught me to do more with less when it comes to money. We’re saving up to move in together and have had to retrain ourselves to spend more wisely. Instead of going out for drinks late at night and getting one or two for $15, we found a new place where happy hour means half off of everything on the menu so we can sneak in dinner with our drinks and spend only about $12 each :-). Doesn’t seem like a lot, but we want to still be able to get out and have fun even when we’re paying rent and putting savings away for when we actually buy houses.

Quality one on one time leaves lots of free time to travel and make memories.

A way we make our charity dollars go further especially around the holidays is shop for food sales for pets and people. We stock up on items our local food pantry and animal shelter can use and then donate it before Christmas. When we shop the sales we can make the dollars we are giving go further, and it feels good too! Secondarily we stopped doing our annual family gift exchange (the one where you pick names) in lieu of picking a charitable cause and using the money we all would have used to buy each other gifts that we don’t need to give to others that do. It feels great to do that!
