November 14th, 2010 by Karen 459 Comments

THANK YOU: The giveaway is closed now, and the winner is being contacted by email and will be announced here on this post no later than Saturday, December 4, 2010. Before you jet, click here to enter any ongoing giveaways.

Do more with less using Windows Phone 7
Doing more (makeup) with less; here’s a full face — eyes, lips and cheeks — for $9.85

To promote the release of Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 7, Federated Media Publishing, Inc. (my advertising partner) is sponsoring a giveaway for us. One lucky reader will take home the new Windows Phone 7 (a $500 value), and all it takes is a comment on “doing more with less.”

Today I did more with less by doing my makeup for less than $10! 🙂

  • One lucky reader will take home the new Windows Phone 7 (a $500 value).

  • Click here for the official rules, but to summarize…
  • Leave a comment at the bottom of this post describing how you “do more with less.” You could describe how you use your favorite multitasking makeup product, how you do your hair and/or makeup when you’re in a huge rush, how you save money on beauty supplies — basically anything related to doing more with less (and, contrary to my examples, it doesn’t have to be beauty related).
  • Deadline to enter is Monday, November 29, 2010.
  • The winner will be chosen at random.
  • You may enter one (1) time per day until the end of the giveaway, but your entries must be substantially different each day.
  • No purchase necessary. Open to legal residents of the 50 United States (D.C.). 18 years and older. Void where prohibited. Click here for official rules. Sponsor: Federated Media Publishing, Inc., 2 Harrison Street, 7th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94105.

Oh, I mentioned at the top that I did more with less today by doing my makeup for less than $10. It was actually $9.85. All of the color products are from N.Y.C. New York For Color.

They aren’t gonna win any awards for slick packaging, but I love the quality of their textures and colors (for $2-3 each). Honestly, I can overlook a lot for that price, and get this: their products are also cruelty free!

N.Y.C. New York Color products clockwise from bottom right: Cheek Glow Powder Blush in Park Avenue Plum ($3.04), Lipstick in Caramel ($1.89), Eyeliner Duet in A Place in the Sun ($1.89), Brow/Eye Liner Pencil in Dark Brown ($1.14), Lengthening Mascara in Jet Black ($1.89)

Here’s how I did this $9.85 look featuring bronze/black eyes, plum cheeks and bronze lips

Eyes: Apply the bronze liner from the N.Y.C. New York Color Cheek Eyeliner Duet in A Place in the Sun ($1.89) to the lid, crease and lower lash line; use a finger or a brush to soften and blend out the edge of the lines. Then, with the black liner from Duet, line both the upper and lower waterlines to add some drama. Open up the eyes with two coats of N.Y.C. New York Color Lengthening Mascara in Jet Black ($1.89) on lashes, and then frame eyes by filling in brows with N.Y.C. New York Color Brow/Eye Liner Pencil in Dark Brown ($1.14).

Lips: Add color to your pucker with the shimmery bronze N.Y.C. New York Color Lipstick in Caramel ($1.89).

Cheeks: Wrap up the look by sweeping N.Y.C. New York Color Cheek Glow Powder Blush in Park Avenue Plum ($3.04), a sheer matte plum, on the apples of the cheeks.

Swatches from left: Lengthening Mascara in Jet Black, Brow/Eye Liner Pencil in Dark Brown, Black liner from A Place in the Sun Duet, Bronze liner from A Place in the Sun Duet, New York Color Lipstick in Caramel and Cheek Glow Powder Blush in Park Avenue Plum

I can’t wait to read your comments. 🙂 Good luck!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I’m disqualified off the getgo, hailing from that country to the north of you, but I do more with less by not washing my hair as often. Instead I rinse it with hot / cold water, condition the ends, leave the conditioner on for a while and wash it all off at the end of the shower, mostly to give my hair a bit more control over the oil situation and to drag out the usage of my beloved Sebastian Drench set as long as I can.

I´m using skin care products only from companies like lavera or weleda, because they´re of a very high quality and really improve the look of your skin. I rather spend a little more on my skin care regimen than spend the rest of my money on expensive foundations and concealers!
And I also make my own facial mask out of fresh ingredients (they work way better than bought ones). The same applies to my peeling.

Keeping my hair short makes me use less shampoo, hairspray, hair dye, etc. Not really an option for many, but I can have my hair washed, dried, and spiked in less time than it took me just to dry my long hair. Buying tubes of hair dye and mixing it with developer is a better option than box dyes. I’m getting 5-6 dyes out of 1 tube now that I’ve found the perfect dye.

Take baths instead of showers if possible. When you’re brushing your teeth turn off the water! In between shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and shaving your legs turn OFF the water. Don’t use paper towels in your own restroom use just regular fabric towels.

I usually concentrate on my grocery shopping since that’s my biggest bang for the buck. I look through the circular and plan meals for the week based on what’s on sale. I also try to get coupons for the sale items to increase the value. Our local grocery store doubles coupons up to a dollar and also give $.10 off per gallon of gas for every $50 spent in the store. It can really add up if you’re a smart shopper. I save an average of 40% on every trip plus the gas savings. 🙂

For instance, if I make a ham or a whole chicken, after two days of eating what I made, I turn it into something new, like soup stew, sandwiches or freeze it for later creations. For classic pieces like a coat or a pair of leather boots, I check for workmanship (so it lasts for a while), comfort (money down the drain if it makes me not want to wear to it) and design (not too trendy so it can last various seasons).

I love this post. I am the queen of “do more with less.” I don’t have much money, so I shop at thrift stores for all of my basics and even much of my fancier items. But, I buy my, one or two, signature pieces at regular stores. When I mix these together the outcome is awesome. People at school used to ask me where I bought my clothes, and I always gave the same response – second hand. Now they ask me how much it costed – usually 2 or 3 dollars. This always gets such a good response, because people always assumed that I spent hundreds of dollars on my outfits.

Although everyone swears by CHI 99 Iron Guard or other high end heat protectant, I, on the other hand, like to use a cheaper alternative -Tresmme heat tamer spray. It is a multipurpose products because most heat protectant are only meant to use for either dry hair or damp/wet hair. So you would need one more blow drying, and another one for curling or straightening. This is a multipurpose product because you can use it for blow drying, curling, and straightening your hair. On a hot summer day, you can also spray some to protect your hair colour! I can do more with less with Tresmme heat tamer spray =D.

My super-fied beauty tip for making it work on the cheap? MULTI-TASKING PRODUCTS, yo. Highlighter is my best friend. On days when I don’t have the time or patience for concealer, I use it to add life to my skin by dabbing along my nose, under my eyes & so forth. Add a smidge of drugstore mascara, a little flush to the cheeks & voila. Work ready in under 5 minutes. I also love Shu Uemura’s liquid gel blush. I use it as blush, lip stain & even a pinch for eye shadow. Chanel blush also does wonders as blush and a lovely eye shadow.

In my unfortunately, untimely unemployment currently (;___;) I’ll invest in one or two high quality products (ie, highlighter or a single blush) and make it work in various ways to compensate for my lack of products.

I love choosing knit oversized sweaters than look good with leggings or denim jeans, or chunky booties that look great dressed up in a black slip dress or dressed down with leggings or a skirt. I also love using my MAC Blacktrack Fluidline as a liner as well as using it to fill in parts of my brows when I’m in a mad dash and also sometimes use it to create designs such as leopard spots on my eyelids if I’m doing some crazy zany makeup. I do more with less by having all my email accounts from several different providers forwarded to one master email account and then that master account forwarded to my cell phone as text alerts! It allows me to only have to check one email account (so to speak) and determine who needs an answer right away and who can wait. There’s never any spam because I use a completely separate account for all my entry forms, registrations, etc and that mail never makes it to my phone! Plus, I have google voice which sends calls anywhere I want (so I reduce my cell minutes used) and it even emails me my voicemails.

If I wanted to, I could get away with just my laptop and blackberry, but I don’t’ want to add my old landlines to the landfills!!

One thing I do pretty much all the time is french braid my hair in the morning. The braid is cute, then later in the day I can let it out and have rocker waves! For makeup if I’m rushed I use UDPP in “sin” on the lid, and dust a pink eyeshadow over it. Some liner, mascara, and peachy blush (yay Nars orgasm!) and I’m out the door! The look is simple and natural, yet pretty and it has a “glow” quality to it.

This is funny because I literally JUST did a project for this phone. I’m and Advertising major and for my class, all the groups (or agencies) had to to an entire campaign for this phone -we presented the projects this week. Learning about the phone has definitely made me want one!

My favorite multitasking product currently would have to be the Fresh Twilight Freshface Glow. I can use it as a highlighter for my browbones, cheekbones, or mix it with my moisturizer to give my entire face that extra “boost.”

When I’m in a rush, I usually just tie my hair back or put it in a loose bun. Makeup-wise, I usually just do my eyebrows and swipe on some mascara. If I’m lucky, I’ll get in some lip gloss.

How do I save?? I’m ALL about bargains and scoring good deals on everything I buy -including makeup and beauty supplies. For drugstore products, I always use membership cards (like the CVS Extra Care Card), I always print coupons in the store (printing station/price scanner) or online, I skim through magazines and newspapers for manufacturer’s coupons (Sunday paper is the best), I wait for products to go on sale, and I always ask for rain checks (for new products that I may want later down the road.) And with all of that, I stack my coupons on top of in store sales and usually come out wtih amazing deals. Sometimes I pay $1-$2 for loads of products.

For example, on a somewhat recent trip to CVS, I scored a drink, chips, 2 Maybelline concealers, 2 false lash sets, Revlon nail polish, and L’Oreal Hair Dye for ONLY $1.63. I technically would’ve gotten it free though because I forgot I had a gift card!

For high-end items, I wait for sales (if the products are limited edition/seasonal/non permanent) or I wait for things like the F&F sale (Sephora.) I also shop around -I don’t limit myself to just one place. Places like beauty.com are ALWAYS having 20% of 10% off your order deals. I also look for deals from RetailMeNot. Also, I buy things when I get GWPs or samples -at least you’re getting something back right??

Anyways, hope this helps someone looking to save! That would be pretty sweet if I won too. =P

P.S. Oops! I just realized that I only have to answer one -not all.

I like to use a flat iron to finish off my hair whenever I go out, but when I’m in a rush, I’ll just blow dry my hair straight and make sure I have a hair elastic and/or bobby pins with me just in case of frizzies later.

I do more with less by doing my gift shopping (and regular shopping) using sites like Jasmere (http://www.jasmere.com/r/7777a1ed?l) and Groupon, which let you buy discounted vouchers for products to use online or in the community. However, as with any shopping site, I’ve found that it is also important to only buy what you will definitely use (what good is a discounted voucher to a restaurant if you aren’t interested in going to it?).

Shopping for beauty products (particularly drugstore!) is a test of my patience. Drugstore makeup is usually more expensive at the drugstore than places like Target and Walmart, but they also go on sale more often and usually with a better deal if you pounce at the right time: BOGO free, 40% off or 50% off. I make a “drugstore wishlist” of all the things I want to try and check the weekly ads every Sunday to see if there are any good deals, if there are, I actually do the math to work out how much each item will cost and how much I’m saving. Manufacturer’s coupons are great and I horde them for occasions like this and then I go and buy my wishlist items, sometimes making multiple trips in order to use multiple coupons. 🙂

Lately I have been doing more with less with Rosebud Salve. I initially purchased it from Sephora a few months ago for my dry lips. But have found out that its awesome for my cuticles, any random burns I get on my fingers from playing Chef in the kitchen, and the best for adding a little bit of shine and color to my cheeks!

Olive oil! I use it as everything. Instead of a facial scrub, which I use weekly, I mix olive oil with some plain white sugar. It’s moistuirizing, delicious, and super cheap. I also rub it on dry spots, which I have a lot of in the winter, instead of my typical expensive body cream. I warm a little bit in my hand and rub it through my hair for added shine, instead of my usual addiction, the Frederik Fekkai olive oil shine mist. Also, after warming it in my hands I pat it on my cheeks. It adds an instant dewy glow! It’s amazing during the cold winter.

This helps stretch my giving-to-charity budget so I can donate more to Toys for Tots, school libraries, etc. Amazon has a Flat Stanley boxed set for $7.50 now!

Doing more for less is also fun when you clip coupons. Whenever I want to try a new drugstore product that comes out I wait for sales and coupons and group them together. I can end up spending less then half the original retail price that way! It all adds up and allows me to keep trying new products without breaking the bank!

I have worked and lived in a national park for the past 7 years. The nearest “real” town with drugstores and grocery stores is a 6 hour round trip! I have learned to buy in bulk- on sale- to get me through the winter season when I can’t get out (no cars!) for 3 months. Even when I can drive, spending the money on gas isn’t economical.
I have learned to use household products (olive oil, sugar, yogurt, honey) to make skin care products. It seems silly to drive for 6 hours just to look at makeup, so I make those rare trips count!!
Those of us that live here trade books, clothes, even products to relieve the boredom that can occur when that hauling urge hits.
It’s amazing to learn what you can live without when you can’t get to it!!

Another way I stretch my dollars and do more for less is by renting audio books for my ipod on my local library’s website. I don’t have to purchase every audio book I want to listen to, only if I truly loved it and want to hear it again. I do more with less by buying used CDs for cheap online or at goodwill. One quick stay in my computer to add the songs to itunes and a quick backup on my external harddrive and it’s ready to pass along to someone else. You can get used CDs shipped for less than $5, which really adds up when an itunes album is $9.99+. It may not be instant gratification but the extra $4+ in my pocket per album is worth the wait. Plus, because others do the same thing, you won’t have to wait for months to get a used version of the latest album.

Doing more with less is the only game in town for me – I live paycheck to paycheck, don’t have a car payment, have the very lowest tier for every excess (such as my plan for my very old, decided non-smart mobile phone) and delegate most wishes to the wish list. Which then gets put in a drawer and never looked at. Most days I find it freeing, other days it’s very frustrating.

My best friend taught me to do more with less when it comes to money. We’re saving up to move in together and have had to retrain ourselves to spend more wisely. Instead of going out for drinks late at night and getting one or two for $15, we found a new place where happy hour means half off of everything on the menu so we can sneak in dinner with our drinks and spend only about $12 each :-). Doesn’t seem like a lot, but we want to still be able to get out and have fun even when we’re paying rent and putting savings away for when we actually buy houses.

A way we make our charity dollars go further especially around the holidays is shop for food sales for pets and people. We stock up on items our local food pantry and animal shelter can use and then donate it before Christmas. When we shop the sales we can make the dollars we are giving go further, and it feels good too! Secondarily we stopped doing our annual family gift exchange (the one where you pick names) in lieu of picking a charitable cause and using the money we all would have used to buy each other gifts that we don’t need to give to others that do. It feels great to do that!

    1. Moisturize lips (duh!)
    2. Pairing with a cotton ball or tissue (or sleeve :p) can remove smudges of last-night’s
    eye makeup.
    3. Brighten and moisturize under-eyes (actually doesn’t sting if your messy and
accidentally rib too far up! wow!)
    4. Define eyelashes (slightly)
    5. Control eyebrows.
    6. Rub into cuticles to make hands look neater and more soft.

We do more with less by finishing all our holiday shopping waaay before the season gets underway. That way, we aren’t caught up in holiday mania or retail marketing when the gifts are being purchased, and we don’t spend as much money.

As an unemployed single Mom, I do alot of cutting corners. Like reusing the plastic containers that some food products come in to not using that many electrical appliances or lights during the day hours.

I do more and save by instead of wasting bottles. I just get a nice mini water bottle and used it.

The last way I do more for less is by ordering beauty items from online retailers that offer deep discounts (BeautyTicket, Head2ToeBeauty) on products. It allows me to either save money on products I would have normally had to pay full price for. I can get bottles of China Glaze from Head2Toe Beauty for 2.99! At Ulta I pay at least $6 for one! You can’t beat that!

Doing more with less: I’m on a pantry clean-out kick. No grocery store for me until all those aging boxes of couscous and off-brand pinto beans are cooked and eaten! More pantry space and more room in the grocery budget.

“I do more with less,” by only using up my skincare products and then purchasing new ones. This includes my facial cleanser, moisturizers, sunscreen.

I do more with less by cutting cleansing towelettes in half to double how long they last (and buying them from Costco – great recommendation, btw).

I used to check my email through a browser; a few months ago I started using an email client. Now I can check all my email accounts at the same time! That’s doing more with less!

Doing more with less could be decorating the christmas tree as a family. More work done in less time, and lots of family time together.

More for less mean having an emergency kit in my car when I travel, and also carrying our own snacks and drinks so that we don’t have to make expensive stops.

I save money on hair and beauty products by registering with cvs beauty advisor panel. I get to do surveys and get paid in cvs bucks. That way I can try new products for free, I also stretch those bucks by combining them with manufacture’s coupon so I get even more. (I live in ca so its not midnight yet)

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my two-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my cat (Tabs).
