Chanel Venice Collection Fall 2009: Gray Days Ahead

Yo, all you hotties who love gray eyeshadows, you’re in luck! Start rolling your pennies, ’cause gray is turning out to be *the* color for eyes this fall.

Last week Dior busted out a gray shadow bonanza with their Jazz Club Collection, and now Chanel’s following suit with their own gray gala, the Venice Collection.

Gray anatomy

Not all grays were created equally, and instead of Dior Jazz Club’s slate grays, Chanel’s Venice focuses on grays infused with deep shades of green.

The grays are joined by a mix of products for eyes, lips, cheeks and nails in shades of peach, pink, gold, white and reddish-plum.

Some of the things that caught my eye…

  • Eye Gloss Luminous Cream Quadra Eye Shadow: These four shimmery cream shadows feel thin and dry to the touch, applying with intense color and shine. I think they’ll create interesting effects when paired with powder shadows.
  • Glossimers in Arlequin and Courtisane: Arlequin (a shimmery, lemony gold) and Courtisane (a shimmery coral pink) could easily pass for spring or summer shades. Don’t both colors seem girly and fun? :)
  • Poudre Douce Soft Pressed Powder in Peche Caresse: Okay, this powder totally fooled me. The texture feels uber-creamy to the touch, so I assumed it was a cream product, but alas, I was wrong, but it’s probably one of the most finely milled powders I’ve ever encountered.
  • Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eye Shadow in Murano: I was hoping the Murano eyeshadow quad from the collection would look like a more intense version of Chanel’s Garden Party quad from 2007, but no soup for me! Instead of rich mints and forest greens, the Murano shades apply as cool grays with hints of greenish-blue.

I kinda spaced out at the counter and forget to get swatches of the Irreellee Duo in Acqua Alta, oops! When I go back later this week, I’ll update this post.

Final thoughts

Like the Venice in Italy, I see the Venice collection taking some time to get to know. The overall color palette seems kinda odd and quirky to me, and so far I don’t understand how the shades will work together, but I’m intrigued and can’t wait to know more.

What’s your take on the color palette? Are you feeling the grays?

Karen

  1. Grey eh? (i’m Canadian). That’s good – I have lots of greys that I barely use. I am LOVING the Chanel glosses and blushes you swatched.

BTW, did you hear they are starting filming Breaking Dawn soon? I know you are a Twilight addict too.

      Hi Michelle,

      Nope, I hadn’t heard that.

Did you like the film? I loved the book but thought the movie was uber cheesy. I’m glad they got a new director for the second flick.

  2. Miss QQ says:

Hi Karen. I love this collection very much. I can’t wait!

  3. Haley says:

If you get the chance, will you please do a look using the Eye Gloss Luminous Cream Quadra Eye Shadow? I’m so curious to see what it looks like on, especially the red toned color.

  4. Kailey says:

    I knewwww it.
Yesterday I was in Target getting books and I wandered to the makeup section.
I thought “hmm…I’m going to get some gray shadows for fall.”
and then you post that gray is the it color.
    I’m psychic xD

  5. Maggie says:

I can’t wait for the glossimers, especially Courtisane. Also that Instinctive lipstick.
Hmm, the “tweed” blush looked better in the promo pics. *sigh*

  6. Caitlin says:

I loooooove greys. They make my green-blue eyes pop and add a more serious, sexy touch :)

    • Karen says:

      Hi Caitlin,

You’re so lucky! I like them but have to really work at them to get them to look decent on my skin.

I bet you can wear lovely gunmetal grays like nobody’s business!

  7. lexi says:

I think I may be more excited over the Dior collection – never thought I would see myself write that….

also the NARS Fall collection looks good too!

  8. Shontay says:

Karen, I checked this collection out a couple of weeks ago and I had to get arelquin. It’s such a gorgeous gold. I really want the tweed blush and fresque blush, also.
I thought the eye gloss was a lip gloss palette! Now that I know it’s for the eye, it must be mine!!! It’s gorgeous.

    • Karen says:

      Hi Shontay,

Fresque looks really pretty. I hope it shows up on me when I try it.

Isn’t the eye gloss exciting? I feel like it’s unlike anything I’ve seen from Chanel.

  9. Beth says:

I’m not usually interested in Chanel makeup. The Glossimers look nice, but I’ve only ever tried their foundation and I wasn’t that impressed.

Now, they bring out the eyeglosses and I’m sooo tempted to buy them. They’re gorgeous colours. $65 is a lot though, I find myself thinking how much other stuff I could get for the money.

I guess I’ll wait and see if they launch the range here. The only time I wanted anything before, they didn’t sell it in the UK for some reason.

    • Karen says:

      Hi Beth,

It’s pretty cool — the gold in that eye gloss quad is my favorite.

I hope you give it a go. Hey, ya never know… you just might get a lot of use out of it.

  10. Karen B says:

Can I have it all? It looks so gorgeous!
Top of my list though are the eye gloss palette and the Courtesane glossimer. Yummie!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Karen B,

Wow, it looks like everybody is psyched about the Eye Gloss. Yay!

I originally thought that the quad was gonna be the star of the show…

  11. Rowena says:

I need the quad. I need. I need the eye glosses too! I wonder when this is out in the UK?
    .-= Rowena’s last blog post… 12 =-.

  12. Bisbee says:

That eye gloss palette will be mine! I’m intrigued…

    • Karen says:

      Hi Bisbee,

Yah! I have no idea how I’m gonna work that reddish plum, but I figure if it’s mixed with the black and layered beneath a dark greenish gray it might be interesting.

  13. gio says:

Usually I’m not very interested in Chanel makeup but I’m intrigued by this collection. The eye gloss palette and th Courtsane glossimer look gorgeous!

  14. Rachel says:

Firstly, Madga (Madgalena Frackowiak) looks so cute in that picture. Now to the makeup! I like peche caresse in the compact, but it looks so light swatched! I think I would go with Fresque actually since it shows up more; the chocolate and gold eye glosses in the quad; the dark-blueish shimmery color in the Murano quad. I like a number of the lipsticks, including: 73, 75, and maybe 77 and 78. I also like both nail varnishes. Wish I could afford it all!

  15. Karen B says:

Yeah. I mean I like the quad but I feel like it’s maybe a tad too dark and dramatic for me. I don’t have the opportunity to do dramatic looks that often… I’m more into bright colours these days…

  16. Ana says:

I just love the Murano quad and the Instinctive lipstick.I don’t have any greens/grey-greens in my make-up bag except for turquoise so I think I’ll give them a try.

  17. Julie Marie says:

ooh I bought the eye gloss! it’s suprisingly pigmented. I’m probably gonna get the Intermezzo nail polish and Murano quad too too :-D
.-= Julie Marie’s last blog post… wanting to make linen spray =-.

  18. Monica Murphy says:

WHAT is the model wearing? Is she wearing the eye gels? What color lipstick is she wearing? Or is that gloss? She is beautiful and I need to have this makeup!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Monica,

I can’t say for sure, but I think she’s wearing the Eye Gloss in black layered beneath the greens from the Murano quad.

The lips look like Instinctive or Amusing lipstick; maybe a mix of both.

  19. Monica Murphy says:

    Karen,

Thanks for the information! I will purchase it all! Which blush did you prefer–the Fresque or the Tweed Sienna?

    Monica
