In less than three years, the value of gold has more than doubled, now selling for more than $900 an ounce. Chanel must have noticed how much people have been lovin’ on gold lately because both of their upcoming fall and holiday makeup collections go after gold in a mad, crazy way.
The fall 2008 collection debuts in July, and like Laura Mercier’s Gold Digger and Dior’s Goldrush it’s all about the gold.
The collection will be the first for new Chanel Creative Director of Makeup Peter Philips. Inspired by Coco Chanel’s now historic apartment on the Rue Cambon in Paris, each of the products range in color from warm brown to bronze and gold.
Philips drew upon more than just the colors inside Coco’s elegant abode. He also took inspiration from some of its furnishings, including a large gold-framed mirror and a rough crystal chandelier.
The fall lineup…
Gold Fiction nail polish, $30: shimmery soft honey-gold, not sparkling bright
Facettes D’Or, $56: a loose, finely milled, gold highlighting powder
Glossimer in Gold Light, $26: a gold lipgloss
3 Rouge Hydrabase lipsticks, $25 each: three shades in copper, plum and coral
Quad eye shadow palette, $56: gold, coffee, ivory and dark green eyeshadows
I’m gonna keep an eye out for Gold Fiction nail polish. The folks at Chanel have said they feel it’s going to be their next big bestseller, following in the footsteps of Vamp (1994’s rich, dark chocolate-red shade that kicked off the dark colored nail craze) and Black Satin (infamous black Chanel polish with silver undertones, introduced in 2006).
Christine Dagousset, executive vice president of Fragrance and Beaute for Chanel, said another upcoming gold-hued nail shade expected to do well is Kaleidoscope, a shiny green-gold, but it’s unknown if Kaleidoscope will be released as part of the fall collection or shortly after.
Peter Philips joined Chanel in January, and while the fall 2008 collection marks his first seasonal collection, it won’t be his first release for Chanel. He created four limited-edition nail colors ($25 each) to celebrate the upcoming May grand opening of Chanel’s massive new Los Angeles boutique. The four pop art colors — Melrose, Rodeo Drive, LA Sunrise and LA Sunset — were each inspired by Southern California’s Robertson Boulevard. Until June, at which time Chanel plans to make the colors available online, the polishes are available in-store only.
After fall, the gold continues shining for Chanel with their 2008 holiday collection, due out in October.
Expect to see…
Poudre Precieuse Or, $75 : a gold highlighting powder
Glossimer in Gold Shine, $26: a gold lipgloss
Noir Scintillant, $28: a black eyeliner with gold sparkle (Note to file: I must have this!)
Haute Chocolate nail polish, $20: a gold-brown polish
Gold is one of this girl’s best friends, so I’m looking forward to both of these upcoming collections. If I’m good, maybe Santa will surprise me with Chanel this Christmas.
Happy Saturday, ladies! I hope you’re having a good one.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Hey Karen,
Its so strange our new line which is coming out in June has a lot of Gold/tan colours in it but is totally different to the u.s. one! I was at a training session on friday afternoon looking at the new products and we have 2 amazing new nail varnishes coming out a gold and a pink!
Im so desperate to go and visit Coco’s appartment in Paris, its by appointment only but apparantly they do allow staff to visit! Did you know there was no bedroom in the appartment because she never ever spent a night there she would always go across the road to her suite at the Ritz to sleep! In fact the back revolving door that Princess Diana was pictured coming out of before she died was built for coco chanel! A little Chanel useless trivia for you there haha! Just what you need for a friday afternoon!

Good heads up! I’m tempted to try gold on my lips, but I don’t know how comfortable I would feel with it on.

I’m a little skeptical about the golds – this is just too gold for me, from the photos anyway. I’m not used to wearing warmer colors but I’m willing to give this and Dior’s collection a go, just to see… or, just an excuse for more Chanel 😉

Hi Holly,
That must be so much fun seeing the products during training! I am super jealous. 🙂
I love useless fun facts and didn’t know that about her apartment. I hope that you get to visit it some day… if you do you’d better take lots of pictures (and send them for me to drool over, LOL).
Karen says
Hi BeautyTalk,
I’m guessing it would be pretty layered over another colored lipstick. That’s usually the only way I can pull off gold, at least.
Karen says
Hi Lilan,
Aww, you should totally try the Dior golds. They are very pretty and wearable. And if you don’t like it you can always wash it off (which is the wonderful thing about makeup.)
Karen says
Hi Indian Girl,
Doesn’t it! When it comes out I am all over it!
Miss Gisele B. says
My goodness Karen,
I can barely wrap my head around the fact that it’s finally spring and that I don’t have to wear a coat + boots … you are so ahead with this feature on holiday 2008 colours.
I don’t want to think of winter of another 7 months…that said…I like what I see and when the time comes, I’ll be running to the Chanel counter!!!

Hi Karen! I’ve been reading your blog since a few days and I am really obsessed by it already. I live in Austria (Europe) and some of the products you introduce here, are not available in Europe. Nevertheless it’s great to read about such things. Thanks for this great information. Ivy

I am unfortunately much too pale to ever be able to pull off golds like those. They just don’t flatter my skin tone at all. On the other hand, the LA nail polishes (especially Melrose and Rodeo Drive) are going to be first on my list when they go online. Those colors are too fun!
Mariah says
GOOD LORD! $30 for a NAIL POLISH??!?!?!? Holy moley! The rest looks pretty though!

With those price tags, I can buy some gold for myself! Holy moly macaroni!
Anyways, Chanel je t’aime. The highlighting powder looks like Firespot eyeshadow from MAC Moonbathe collection. Black Satin was madness in 06, I remember the NY Times ran an article about it.
Karen says
Hi Ivy,
It’s great to meet ya, girl! Helloooo from California! 🙂 I’m glad you enjoy the blog and hope you pop by and say hi again. Have a good week!
Karen says
Hi Holley,
I like the LA polishes too. I don’t think I’ll be in SoCal in May so I’ll have to wait for them online as well.
Karen says
Hi Mariah,
I know, right? If that color actually does become a big trend then women will be all over that like syrup on pancakes and will fork out that $30 is a second. (Hey, I know I would, I can’t lie!).
Karen says
Hi Dao,
I can’t wait for these to come out. Gold tones are such a no-brainer for me. I never did end up picking up a bottle of Black Satin… Hope you’re having a good weekend!
froo-gal says
oh good lord, that gold-brown nailpolish! i love it.. although i’m not really sure how great it’d be on my NC35 skin.

Golds are hit-or-miss for me, but I’ll try on that glossimer! I actually got the BeneFit 24 Karat lipgloss, and I was disappointed with the payoff! It works better than one would think with my cool skin tone! I need to see the quad too!
I’m liking that Melrose purple! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Froo-Gal,
I’m guessing it’ll look pretty fierce! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Jennifer,
LOL! Girl, you got some time to save up for these goodies! Gotta hold on till July… (ahhhg!)
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Yah, we both need that quad ASAP!
It’s been years since I’ve used a BeneFit gloss. I do recall them not having lots of payoff, hmmm.
Melrose is fun. Strangely, I’m moved by the yellow shade. 🙂
Hope you had a FANTASTIC night!

I’m on the quad train! 🙂
I hadn’t bought the BeneFit glosses for so long, because I didn’t like them much. I broke my own rule, and was accordingly disappointed with the product! Oh well! Sometimes I use it and add a little gold shadow just to intensify it a bit. Overall, I think it was a good idea poorly executed, which is why the Chanel gold gloss looks tempting!
I can totally see you rocking that yellow! I actually got the wrong name, it’s the Rodeo Drive purple that’s turning my head!
Oh, I had such a great time! Good food, entertaining environs (there was a bachelorette party there and one of them had brought in a 6-foot long inflatable willy!) and some of my favorite people in world! Afterward, we danced and had frou-frou drinks and then went for coffee in North Beach! Really fun!
Holly says
Hi Glosslizard,
omg you HAVE to try the Chanel quad with the summer safari line (not sure if thats what its called in the u.s. but the same line as le vernis Flamingo anyway!) its amazing! I tried it out at the launch meeting last week and fell head over heels! In fact I loved the whole collection!
I really hope you are getting the new glosses over your side of the pond too as they look really amazing even the packaging has me excited which is unusual for Chanel! But the brushes on them are really good quality!
Karen says
Hi Ms Notty,
Yup… it’s a LOT of gold!
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Yah girl! It’s a train that doesn’t stop, either! I am hopelessly addicted (le sigh). 🙂
You know what you could do with that gloss is add a lip safe gold MAC pigment. Go to the store and ask for a sample… they’ll last you FOREVER, plus, you won’t have to use much of it with the gloss.
It sounds like your birthday celebration was full on fab! I’m glad you got to spend time with your homies and that the evening was filled with fun. How did the lashes go, BTW?
Happy Birthday!
Glosslizard says
Hi Holly!
I did try the Safari quad and, alas, it was way too warm for my complexion! It washes me out to the nth degree! The cooler trends in the fall are generally much more to my liking! 🙂
I did get Gazelle though!
Glosslizard says
Hi Karen!
At least there’s good company on that train!
That’s a GREAT idea! Good looks and brains too… El Hub is a lucky guy! 😉
OMG! I got so many compliments on the lashes! They were great! I could see them in the mirror from across the room! LOL! I felt like such the vixen!
Only prob was that toward the end of the evening, the adhesive started to give out on the inner corners! I’m such a klutz, and it was only my second time ever trying to put on eyelashes! If I do it again, I’m going to the Shu or MAC stores so they’ll put them on for me!
Thank you! If the celebrations are any indication, this is going to be an amazingly fantastic year! 😀

Karen,
You are gonna freak when I tell you this — the room you have posted on this entry is the Coco Chanel Suite at The Ritz Hotel in Paris, France. I was a guest in that room because my girlfriend (who has started her cosmetic line) was thrown a private 40th birthday party in that room by Sharon Stone!!! No Kidding!!! I was sitting on that couch munching on chocolate birthday cake and champagne less than 2 weeks ago! True story!
In fact — I took a picture of me in the bedroom area — and the view from the balcony. It is a truly amazing hotel — I was also in the company of the Head of PR for Dior — Sylvie — she is an amazing person. I do love both Chanel and Dior’s products — but, my girlfriends are really great too. Keep you fingers crossed for us — Sephora is coming together!
Hope all is well with you!
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
I am so glad to hear the lashes were a success. I knew you could do it! I’m sure that nobody noticed the inner corners towards the end of the evening… they were all probably too happy and in party mode! 🙂 I hope you took lots of great pictures!
You have inspired me to bust mine out too! Maybe I’ll take mine out for a spin for my birthday in June, woot!
Karen says
Hi Melissa,
Okay, so um WOW! I was going to ask about your Paris trip but so did not expect that amazing Chanel six-degrees-of-kevin-bacon coincidence. Speaking of odd coincidences, I used to work for a law firm that had its offices in the same building Sharon Stone lived in. And my co-worker almost was run over by Sharon Stone in the parking garage (so she claimed)!
I am totally keeping my fingers crossed for you. It sounds like an exciting time in your friend’s business and I wish you guys so much success!
BTW, do you have any Dior faves? I’m fairly new to the line and I’m already getting addicted.
Things on this end are busy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I just picked up another writing assignment, which I’m excited about. It’s a Hawaii story… so even though I haven’t been there in almost a year, at least I get to write about it.
When you gonna get up here girl? I may be down there in May (got the itch to go surfing) so I’ll let you know if I’ll be in your hood….
Glosslizard says
I didn’t take any pictures (boo for me)! I’ll look forward to seeing you in your lashes for your birthday though! Are you gonna get the big, feathery yellow ones?
Glosslizard says
Hi Melissa!
That is all just so darned cool!!
My fingers are crossed for you too! 🙂
Karen says
Glosslizard! GIRL, I wanted to see those lashes!
Maybe I’ll rock the big feathery ones! But if I end up going dancing they just might throw off my equilibrium, hmmm. I don’t have plans yet but I figure you only turn 33 once… it ain’t 16 or 21 but you might as well GO BIG!
Melissa Street/Epic Make-Up says
Hi Karen! I know — I was blown away myself because I had no idea what I was walking into either. Sharon Stone and Beatrice (she is a french journalist and another very good friend of my friend) had really set us all up. We just fell right into this birthday “trap” and our husband’s were along for the ride. Now watching their faces was priceless!!!
Paris was amazing and we got a ton of work done with our new french manufacture! We took a few side trips though to Germany, Austria, Cesky Krumlov & Prague. Totally fab trip for my first time to Europe!
As far as my favs from the Dior line — well I love and cant live without Dior Show mascara in blackout, love the lipstick in the shades called Vibrant Pink, Scandalous Fuschia, and Spicy Red and I love the eye shadow palettes that you posted. Great colors! So worth the price.
My all time favorite cosmetic line was Calvin Klein (old school) — I am not sure how I feel about this new line he has — it’s not the same formulation so I am not totally sold on it yet.
Hope your new writing assignment goes well and I really want to get up your way so we can have that coffee!!!!
Glosslizard says
Ok, I realized this morning that my mom would have wanted to see the lashes too (duh)! So I’m going to re-create the look and I’ll send pics to you and her!
Boo-hoo! I have to put on fancy make-up again! 😉
Karen says
Hi Melissa,
Your trip really sound like it was truly amazing. I hope you got to do some sightseeing too!
Wow! Old school Calvin Klein, huh? What did you do when they phased it out way back when? I would’ve so stockpiled enough product for the next three lifetimes. I hunt and gather like that!
Thank you for your sending your Dior favorites… I have now added them to my list of things to “investigate.” I swear that list is getting exponentially longer!
Karen says
Yay, Glosslizard! I forsee that you will soon be getting some e-mail back from me!
Melissa Street/Epic Make-Up says
Karen, we did have time to sight see — some of the most amazing places and I will remember that trip forever. I did stockpile Calvin, but sadly I have used all of it — other had to get rid of it because lipstick started smelling (yuck). So, I was very excited when I heard he was making a come back with the cosmetic line, but they don’t have them same colors (boo hoo)!
Check out my Dior favs, but girl remember, I am a film and TV make-up artist — love lots of pigment in my colors and need them because of the lights! That fushia is a great color!
Much love and happy Dior shopping!!!

Saw these golden Chanel items for Fall 2008 and checked my Chanel goods. I won’t be needing these. I have El Dorado Gold highlighter or is it a blush from a few years back and a golden eye shadow which was part of a Limited Edition and came with Coco’s favorite shade of red lippie in a pencil slim tube. I showed the picture of the beautiful gold Chanel treasures to Dear Hubby and this is what he said, “You don’t need those. I have some gold paint down the cellar.” Hmmph-that’s where he can go when he is looking for his dinner. hahahahaha!!!
