Once upon a time, I had my aura read in a Las Vegas bathroom. I know it sounds a little pervy in a George Michael kinda way, but it was all good, clean (if not totally random) fun.
I was in town for a wedding and went to the restroom to wash my hands before the reception dinner. There was a woman at the sink next to me, and she was intensely staring at my reflection in the mirror.
I smiled at her while preparing to jet, ’cause, you know, in the movies, nothing good ever happens when strangers stare at you in public bathrooms. And that’s when she said, “Your aura’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen before.”
Um…thank you?
Some people believe that each of us has an aura, a field of radiant, luminous color that surrounds us. These fields, which are invisible to all but a few gifted individuals who are able to perceive them, are unique combinations of colors, like pigmented fingerprints, and I can only imagine how beautiful they must look.
I got to chatting with the woman in the restroom, who as luck would have it turned out not to be a serial killer (BIG relief). She was a kind of mystic and insisted on giving me a quick reading right there at the sink. She described my aura as an unusually bright mix of beautiful yellow and orange.
How intriguing! Perhaps almost as intriguing as the Hourglass Aura Collection for lips and cheeks. 🙂
This spring the luxury indie line is introducing six new permanent products to improve your aura in a few quick clicks. For the record, I’m pretty sure they’re referring to a different kind of aura than the one I heard about in the restroom, LOL!
Hourglass, a relatively new line known for their foundations and powders, loves elegant packaging, smooth textures and wearable colors. They remind me a lot of Becca.
Their products are on the expensive side, but the few I’ve tried perform well, especially the Extreme Sheen lipglosses, which I lurve.
Spring’s Aura Sheer Lip Stains ($26) and Aura Sheer Cheek Stains ($45) promise to boost your aura by gracing your lips and cheeks with lovely sheer washes of color.
These liquidy gel stains, with colors Hourglass interestingly describes as halfway between a stain and a tint (hmm!), come with convenient twist-up pens and sponge-tip applicators. They sound like good picks for busy days when I don’t want to bother with brushes.
Hourglass claims they based the concept on ’70s California fashion — easy, relaxed, subtle, ethereal, natural looking and transparent.
The lip stains are coming in three shades — deep berry Scarlet, pinkish coral Flush and pinkish beige Petal — dry to a semi-matte finish, while the cheek stains, which dry to a similar semi-matte finish, are coming in the same Flush and Petal shades, as well as a third shade called Rouge (a rose).

All of the new products are supposed to layer well for when you want more punch from your colors.
They are expensive, for sure, and that’s no fun, but I’m curious. I wonder what my aura will think?
Look for them at Sephora (in stores and online) and Barneys New York this spring.

I really need to stop watching food shows before bed…
I know I’m many years late to this party, but I’ve just started watching Top Chef, and now I’m totally hooked.
I’m working (and eating) my way through the Las Vegas season, watching episodes on my laptop in bed. Consequently, I’ve been waking up a lot hungrier than usual. 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. Since we were talking about George up at the top of this post, remember this?

I had my aura read randomly once, too! Just recently, when I was waiting outside of the T-Mobile store to get a new phone, this lady walked up to me and started talking to me about how bright my aura was and that I must be really good with my hands, and that a co-worker is romantically interested in me and making a decision in that department will lead me to wealth (which I thought was funny because I’m currently single and broke!).
Anyhoo, just thought I’d share a similar story! I’ve always wanted to try Hourglass, but they’re a wee bit out of my price range.
Karen says
How random. I didn’t realize how often this kind of thing happened (or maybe all of us just happen to have awesome auras, LOL!).
Jen says
That must be it! Awesome auras, high fives all around! 🙂

I don’t know about aura, but I once has a psychic stop me in the mall because she said my energy was beyond intense. I didn’t tell her a single thing about myself but she started saying that I was confused about some life issues….scary thing was she was totally right!
On another note, I love lip stains so I will check out the new ones when they are available in store.
Karen says
That’s interesting. You must’ve been putting out some powerful vibes!

My hubby can read auras. 🙂
I’ve never tried anything from Hourglass before but the cheek stains remind me of bingo dobbers, lol. I used to play bingo at my nearest casino at 1am every Monday morning when I lived in Vegas. Fun times (and I only won once)!
Karen says
Really? That’s pretty cool. Is it something he could always do or a learned skill?
Speaking of bingo, I played a few times when I was doing volunteering at an old folk’s home, and those seniors could PLAY! They were really, really serious about bingo.

Karen you are an amazing writer. I would have never thought that a person would be able tie an impromptu psychic reading and makeup together. 🙂 You are truely gifted.
And I love that song by Wham. Boy that took me back.
Karen says
Aww, thanks Vanessa. 🙂
I have an ’80s playlist and have the songs are by Wham/George Michael. Remember Careless Whisper?
Vanessa says
Yes. That was an good song too!
Karen says
As cheesy as that saxophone solo is at the beginning I still love it! 😀
Kim says
You should totally check out the Seether version of Careless Whisper. 🙂
Tracy says
I’ve never had my aura read, but I hope it’s teal! 🙂
I remember that song all too well! I’m really interested in those cheek stains. They look lovely.
Karen says
Yeah… TEAL WITH GLITTER!
dani@callitbeauty says
the cheek stains are gorgeous!
on the topic of aura’s, i once was approached by a lady in a forever 21 somewhere in california… she said i had a really interesting aura or some such and was willing to give me a free reading. i declined but i’ve always been a little intrigued. i wonder what she would’ve said :p
Karen says
That’s so random! I never realized so many ladies had brushes with random aura readers. 🙂
Nina says
funny you mentioned wham — the hubs and i were talking about them a few nights ago!
im gonna be all about those cheek stains — theyre my fave thing in the world for cheeks!
Karen says
LOL, were you two talking about Wham’s greatest hits?
I actually was a big George Michael/Wham fan back in the day. I still have Faith — ON TAPE!
Nina says
why yes we were LOL. i think i was humming last christmas under my breath while folding laundry and it took of from there!
i loved Wham (stil do!) …. my fave song ever is “kissing a fool” 🙂
Glosslizard says
Scarlet and Rouge are right up my alley! 🙂
Hmmm, no-one has ever made unsolicited (or ever solicited, for that matter) comments about my aura, maybe I ought to start hanging out in more Las Vegas bathrooms! 😉
Karen says
I can see your aura as a beautiful plummy berry!
Makeup Morsels says
hahah, you do strike me as someone who would have a cheerful-color aura. Lovee those lipstains, I’ll definitely check these out once they come out in store.
Karen says
Heehee! Do you know much about auras? I think the idea is kinda neat.
Jenocampo says
Must try Scarlet, I would never try that color in a cream but definitely a stain for the winter….even though after seeing the D&G Spring collection I am ready to move onto airy fresher colors!
Karen says
Me too. I love lush violets, greens and purples. Let’s just fast forward to spring already!
Faux Flush says
“Purple! Your aura is purple!” Name that movie beauty friends.
Karen says
I’m stumped!
Jennifer says
yea the whole aura reading thing is quite bizarre. first time it happened to me i was so confused why someone would say that my aura was glowing. but then it kept happening again and again. I have a feeling it’s just soliciting psychics that go around telling people they have an aura.
Kim says
Is it odd that the wooly lip applicators sort of give me the heebie-jeebies? It’s like the thought of rubbing a hard, dry sponge across a dry counter top. Never mind. It’s clearly odd. I think the cheek stains look pretty neat, though.
It totally makes sense that your aura would be something bright and cheerful. 🙂 I’ve never been solicited for an aura reading myself and, though I’m not a big believer in mystical things, I absolutely find them interesting and would be happy to hear someone’s thoughts on my aura.
PS Wham’s “I’m Your Man” is still on my running playlist. I unabashedly love it!

What a great idea! A lip and cheek make-up device will now spare my handbag from atleast one product on a night out!
