Orange lips at Twinkle by Wenlas
I love the artistry that goes into creating vibrant makeup looks, but the only place I feel truly comfortable rocking CRAAZAAAAY colored eyes and lips is in my living room.
That said, some of the eye-catching runway looks at New York Fashion Week this time around are making me feel adventurous.
Bold is in this season — the single, shocking pops of color decorating an almost-nude face.
It started off a few days ago at Vena Cava with some bad ass matte purple pouts.
And then bold makeup showed up again at L.A.M.B., where their models repeatedly rocked brightly-lined electric blue and neon orange eyes.
At Twinkle by Wenlas, the orange lips (done by MAC I believe) caught everyone’s attention… It’s kinda Mad Men retro, don’t you think?
I’m so totally digging the makeup at Fashion Week this time around — the bold pops of purple, blue and orange. I hope we see it as a trend at the consumer cosmetics level over the next few months.
I know the look’s not for everyone, though, especially the way it’s taken to extremes at Fashion Week.
What do you think about these looks?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I hate it when girls look at you funny because your wearing bright lipstick or super bright liner. Makeup is fun and should be shown off! I love rocking my bright blue and green eye liner, it def picks me up on those hard and tired days.

Hi Stephie,
You officially rock! I love it when girls can pull off these bright shades with such confidence. 🙂

Hell no….if I’m getting on the street with my hair looking like this everybody will think I’m a junkie or smth. They are interesting but to be worn by models on fashion shows:). Ladies don’t forget to check out my first GIVEAWAY

I think it depends on the context (I’m a college professor), but I’d be willing to try the orange lips (I have a slightly subdued shade from Flirt!) or maybe your version of the violet lips. The eye color is something I’d risk if I was going out for the night… but not if I might run into my students after class. 🙂

What a coincidence that you mention orange lipstick; I just purchased morange lipstick a week ago. I think it’s a more unique and interesting alternative to hot pink or red lipstick, and it’s really flattering on my skintone. And I love bright colored liners!

Karen says
Hi Denise,
Nice! What eyes do like to wear your lippie with? Do you keep ’em bare, or do you go all out?
Glosslizard says
Haayyy! The electricians are done here and I finally have power again! Yay!
I’d totes rock the violet lip, but I can’t/won’t do orange and the blue/red liner is a bit too 80’s retro for my blood! I might do a cat-eye with deep teal or purple though!
Happy Monday! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Power is always a good thing in this modern age. 😉
Aww, no blue liner for you? For some reason that’s just SPEAKING to me!
amy says
I love the look of a nude face with just a pop of colour. It is fun and it is a lot less work. Before I started to play with more brightly and colourful eyeshadow looks, I do a nude eye and bright lip all the time. It might be counterintuitive but this fall and winter I might go back to a nude eye and vibrant lip look such as red, hot pink and violets. I just feel very refreshed with a bright lip in the cold, gray and wet winters in Vancouver.

Hi Amy,
I’m feeling the bright lips, too. Do you tend to do yours glossy or matte?
Hafsa says
I would rock the eyeliner, and even maybe the orange lip! Honestly, the thing about bold colors is that it depends on how well it goes with the person’s skin tone. One some skin tones, for example, the orange lip will look awesome. On others, it would look too weird. My best advice is to work with what you have, and if you DO want to wear orange lipstick, tone it up or down, just make it work to your advantage!

Hi Hafsa,
This is great advice. Another good reminder: makeup always comes off! If it looks funky you can always remove it and try again. 🙂

Girl show me the color !! Lol
I am all about bright eyes as much as I want to rock bright lips it’s hard on the day to day cause I have big pouty lips lol it’s too much for me to wear but macara, eyeshadow, nailpolish -count me in for color 100 %
besides I am ny born and raised anything goes ESP when obecworks in a creative field . I am def not the most stylish or walk around everyday in a pair of hot shoes but my makeup is my style statement. When I wear color people always compliment me on my application and use of color – I am my own canvas !!
Karen says
Hi Yadi,
You are my bright eyeshadow hero. I wish I could rock the crazy colors with such confidence. This spring I’m determined to become one with orange, LOL!
Solé says
I’m definitely going to try the “realway” version of these looks, but I do think a lot of these makeup looks are a lot more wearable right off the runway than a lot of Fashion Week’s offerings from the past. I’m already doing the bright lips this summer so I’ve gotten over the initial shock of catching myself in the mirror with bright orange lips. It actually looks really nice. I like doing bold makeup looks when I go out at night anyway, but I doubt I’d be going this wild for daytime – especially given that I’m a full-time student.
Karen says
Hi Sole,
I agree. Sometimes I see the looks and am at a total loss as to how to translate it into real-life makeup, but this season there seems to be a lot of wearable looks.
What classes are you taking this semester? Anything exciting?
Marce says
Oooh! I reckon they’re awesome! I love those orange lips, maybe one day I’ll rock them? In my living room maybe? LOL
But I do want to try out that colourful liner, using Chartruese pigment which I got about a week ago but haven’t busted out yet…any ideas? 😀
.-= Marce’s last blog post… Alerta! – MAC en New York Fashion Week =-.
Karen says
Hi Marce,
If you have a white pencil lay that down first, and then follow with the Chartruese pigment. That should give the pigment something to stick to and add more pop to the color.

Hi Karen,
This is going to be my first semester of upper division classes so I’m really excited about taking courses that actually apply to my major, which is Spanish and Linguistics. I’m taking intro to linguistics, Portuguese 1, and a Spanish composition class. School starts on the 24th though so I’m still waiting. Getting a little impatient. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Sole,
How exciting! Upper division is when you get the really good stuff (and when you finally start seeing that very faint light at the end of the tunnel!).
Oh, and you’re so lucky to be taking Portuguese! It’s such a beautiful language. I went to Portugal a few years go and loved it! I hope to go back someday.
The 24th will roll around faster than you think. Do you have all your books and stuff ready?
amy says
Hey Karen,
I love glossy and for the last couple of years I like high shine, but I feeling a matte or a cream finish nowadays because it just looks so much sharper and more vibrant!
.-= amy’s last blog post… John Masters Organics Sea Mist Sea Salt Spray with Lavender =-.
Karen says
Hi Amy,
Yeah, me too. I think enough time has between the 90s (when mattes ruled!) for it to come back into style again. I love the look of a vibrant matte pink lip and a very clean eye. So crisp and classic!
Tania says
Karen,
Not a fan of orange lips on myself but I like it on these ladies. LOVE LOVE LOVE the blue eyeliner!!! I’m a youth pastor so my youth would dig it. However I couldn’t rock it and preach as it’s a bit distracting.
Karen says
Hi Tania,
I remember you mentioning that that was your job. I bet it’s very rewarding! How long have you been doing it for?
gio says
I’m always wearing bright, bold and colorful eye makeup. It’s fun and always makes me feel better when I’m down. But because I put so much emphasys on the eyes, I tend to tone down the lips. So I don’t think I’ll be rocking orange or purple lips, unless I’m wearing natural eye makeup (but that doesn’t happen often). As much as I love bright eyeshadows, they aren’t suitable for some occasions.

I was checking out the looks from NYWF for about 3 hours today 😀 And I’ve picked up my 3 favorite looks.
And as for bold colors – hell, yes for bright coral(orange) lips. Just got myself such lipstick:)) about a month ago! I got so many compliments 😀
And no for eyeliner from L.A.M.B. show!

Cool. What color lipstick did you get?
Solé says
Not yet, I’ll be buying my books later this week. My loan disbursement just came in and I’m waiting for the difference (after tuition) to transfer to my bank account so I can buy my books. I also need to get school supplies and hopefully some back to school clothes, but I’m not sure how far I can stretch that money. Eek.

I love these trends but I wouldn’t try any for myself, other than bright eyeshadow. Lipstick isn’t great on me, but I know I can rock bold colors.

the very bold orange lips look awful! What are the artists thinking?? Orange lips are not flattering on 95% of women. These makeup looks overall are too “Out there” for regular wear, which we all know, but why do they make them so unwearable, even on th models?
Karen says
Hi Singrsling,
Aw, I love those lips! I think they’re kinda retro…
Emily says
I think it would be really pretty to wear bright colors as stains. I love the bright liner! I would either wear a thin line above a line of black/brown on my top lashline, or a line of black/brown on my top, then a line of color on the bottom.
