You know you’re from California when you’re already complaining about the weather after the first rains of the season. You see, I’m a certified weather wimp, and I was over the moon this morning when I looked out the windows and saw blue skies.
Tabs was even happier than I was because it meant he’d be able to go outside again after being cooped up all weekend long, and the first thing we did was go for a nice, long walk.
While he mouth mowed his favorite patch of grass, I gazed up at the sky and thought, “blue…” I know! — I’ll do a blue eye look with maybe a dash of purple to celebrate the day.
Right away I knew I wanted to use the Bobbi Brown Crystal Eye Palette from the Holiday 2010 Collection.
The Bobbi Brown Crystal Eye Palette
She’s the party girl of the release and the brightest of BB’s holiday eye sets, with four fun, shimmery powder shadows in purple, lilac, off-white and teal.
Since I’d already be wearing the palette, I figured I’d go all the way (all the way across the sky) with Bobbi, so I also used her products (a mix from fall and holiday) for my cheeks and lips.
Clockwise from bottom: Bobbi Brown Beauty Rules Palette, Crystal Eye Palette, Bobbi Brown Modern Classic Lip & Eye Palette, Bobbi Brown Kohl Eye Liner in Black
That’s the Crystal Eye Palette and Bobbi’s Kohl Eye Liner in Black from the Black Velvet collection on my eyes, Glitter Lip Gloss in Golden Topaz atop Shimmer Lip Gloss in Paisley Rose (both from the Modern Classic Lip & Eye Palette) on my lips, and Pot Rouge in Baby Pink from Bobbi’s Beauty Rules Palette on my cheeks.

More on the products I used…
I used about three layers for the products in the palette, which is why they turned out fairly bright. For a quieter version of the look, you could do something like a single wash of color on the lid, perhaps with a fluffy domed eye shadow brush like the MAC 217, and then line your lash and water lines with a black eye pencil.
Also, I must say — I really, REALLY dig the Pot Rouge in Baby Pink from the Beauty Rules Palette. Talk about pigment! A little goes a long way, and it’s extremely flexible (très easy to blend), working on either bare skin or atop foundations and powders. No one should put this baby in a corner because, like Jennifer Grey, she’s a star.
A note about the glosses from the Modern Classic Lip & Eye palette: I like how they look in pictures, but they could stand to be more hydrating. After an hour wearing them my lips start to feel dry and uncomfortable.
I’m pretty happy with the overall look, but the next time I do it I think I’ll skip the color on the lower lash line and make the whole effect a little less BAM! Maybe like this it’d work for pictures and parties, but this isn’t exactly a “Honey, I’m running to Target” look, LOL!
How do you feel about bright blue eye shadows? Do/would you wear them in daytime or more so at night?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Heidi says
Ooh, I really like this Crystal Palette. I may have to pick this up. I usually would use a bright blue like this is a liner for daytime with neutral shadows on the lid (I wear glasses, so I can get away with a little brightness). For a party or evening, I would find a way to rock all those sparkly colors at the same time!
Karen says
Hi Heidi,
Ooh, love it! I love doing a line of bright blue or teal with a neutral lid. 🙂
HanaBerlin says
I have a really hard time pulling off blues. I’m gonna have to pass on this.
Karen says
Hi Hana,
Aww, bummer. Do you do any other brights?
Ithfifi says
Looks gorgeous on you! I love my blues and I am not afraid of em! (Oh hey I go light blue/brightblue/navy!) they make my brown peepers pop! ~ so I love the last colour but I am unsure on the other colours since I am very picky with the purples! Somehow you manage to pull every colour off!!
Karen says
Hi Ithfifi,
I’m very picky about my purples too. If they’ve got any purple I can’t pull ’em off at all, sigh.
Are you enjoying your vacation?
makeup morsels says
ooh I am impressed with the pigmentation on those glosses! I usually expect lip palettes to have meh pigmentation at best. Too bad about the drying factor though 🙁
I love the eye look you did! It looks very cute on you, your earrings make me think of warm weather too (probably b/c they remind me of the beach). I don’t wear blue eyeshadow that much, just because (I think) it requires more thought than any other color, if that makes sense. If I want to go bright for an everyday look, and I’m running short on time, I usually stick to greens.
Karen says
Greens are fun too. Do you do bright greens? Or are you do you go for darker shades? I’m a khaki girl myself.
Tracy says
I love wearing blues-and my eyes are blue. Not afraid to wear them at all-my peepers look bluer if I wear even just the tiniest amount of blue. If I wear teals, my eyes look greener and I do love teals too. My fave blue palette is the Estee Lauder Blue Dahlia-it’s gorgeous. You look tres beautiful in blues too I must say!
Karen says
Hi Tracy,
Thanks! 🙂
Have you ever heard of MAC Parrot? It’s the most beautiful teal…
marisol says
THat palette is lovely. I think I may have some similar colors. Hhmm… thanks for the inspiration.
Karen says
Hi Marisol,
You’re welcome! If you end up trying this look you’ll have to let me know how it turns out. 🙂
Hope you had a good Monday. 🙂
Nika says
This is a great look! But I’m still dying to get my very own Modern Classic Lip & Eye Palette. I fell in love with it the very first time you posted it!
Karen says
Hi Nika,
I really like the eyeshadows in that one. I’ll post a look soon! 🙂
Rae says
Aww, you’re too cute, Karen 🙂 This looks lovely on you! Skipping (or maybe just thinning out?) the colour on the lower lashline would definitely make it a little less BAM! and a little more wearable, but honestly, I adore the look as-is!
Karen says
Thanks, Rae!
Pinch says
It looks wonderful on you, Karen! Good thing you don’t live here in Norway with me. We’ve had snow, hail and intense rain lately, with temps from 17 to 35 degrees F 🙂
Karen says
Hi Pinch,
Oh, I could not hang! Snow is my weather nemesis, LOL!
gio says
The palette looks pretty and I love the look. It’s colorful and beautiful! You look gorgeous!
Karen says
Thanks, Gio! I had a feeling you’d dig this. 🙂
Tiffany H says
Those colors are lovely. That’s another one going on my list!
Karen says
Awesome, Tiffany! Do you wear blues and purples often?
Nina says
sooo pretty! 🙂 im glad tabs has finally gone out! 🙂
i woke up today to linus sprawled on my belleh – and thought to myself : thats why i was dreaming i couldnt breathe! so heavy! 😛
Karen says
That’s so cute! He wanted early morning lurvies.
Tabs is going through one of those, “I hate your guts” phases. He hasn’t wanted to snuggle with me in days. 🙁 He’s been P.O.’d about the rain… I think he thinks it’s my fault.
Nina says
awww ….. must have been the weather!!!
what i <3 about linus is he doesnt do things like that very often … and when he does i feel like im the best momma in the world! 🙂
Karen says
I hope so! I think he’s just going through one of his weird cat phases. You know how they are.
Do you have any pics of Linus or your other fur kids?
Maya says
i LOVE purples, for some reason, they really compliment my blue-grayish eyes (though the traditional blue-eyes colors look the best on me- browns, golds and oranges= blue eyes perfection). I love blue as well, if I use just enough it deepens the blue of my peepers (what an adorable word!) and doesn’t make them blend into the colorful background.
Lovely look, though it would look anazing with some intense highlight in the inner corners and not as much on the brow bone, and maybe some light blue and navy in a gradiant effect into the purple.
Karen says
Hi Maya,
Your eyes sound so pretty! 🙂
BTW, thanks for the idea to try the blue as a highlight in the inner corder. I’ll have to see if I can pull off the gradient… it’s gonna take some blending skill.
How’s your Tuesday going, btw?
Anna says
You look so gorgeous! I love the eye colors. I just purchased a BB pot rouge from the sephora sale and I can’t wait to get it in the mail this week. yay cream blush for winter! =D
i dare you to go to target with that look anyway. you’ll stop people in their tracks 😉
Karen says
Hi Anna,
Ooh, you’re gonna love that Pot Rouge. What color did you get?
Danielle says
How in the world do you take Tabs for a walk? Do you use a leash? Does he follow you? My cat does his own thing outdoors, then meows at the back door when he wants to be let in.
Karen says
He has a harness! It took a while to bribe him to wear it (lots of catnip and gravy were involved), but after he got used to it he started really loving it. Here are pics:

I basically follow him around. If he goes somewhere he’s not supposed to, then I just pick up him up and move him!
I’d love to let him do his thing outdoors, but I’m afraid he’ll never want to go back in again (he used to be an outdoor kitty).
How old’s your kitty?
knownever says
People always say blue is great with brown eyes, but ever since some disastrous photos taken when I was wearing blue shadow I tend to stay away from it. Maybe I’ve never found the right shade or it’s my coloring or something but I tend to look like the woman from Drew Carey show (especially in pictures) when I wear blue shadows.
Karen says
Hi Knownever,
Have you tried popping a warm brown into the crease? That might help tone the blue down.
Shanda says
hey Karen, what’s a good warm brown?
Karen says
Hi Shanda,
My faves are from MAC — Soft Brown, Saddle and Brown Script. 🙂
Kim says
I like it! It’s happy and a bit sparkley. 🙂 I’m actually wearing the electric blue liner from Jackpot today, so I may not be a good judge, though!
Shanda says
Did you find that the purple does not swatch as it appears in the palette? To me it was like a black purple on my lids so I’m trying to figure out a good base to put underneath it. I stil love it though, b/c the blue is divine!
