I tried hard not to think about Phil Collins today while playing with Benefit’s new $36 Groovy Kind-a Love holiday kit…but it was really, really hard, man.
I told myself, “Focus! Think about the eyeshadows!” (There are four of them, all neutrals and very wearable.) and “Get your head in the game, Karen! You could use the blush combo as a highlighter if you layer it on top of Benetint.”
But nooOOOoo. I just kept hearing Phil ask, “Wouldn’t you agree? Baby, you and me, got a groovy kind of love?”
Yup.
That tune is etched in my mind as the song my college neighbor played whenever a girl would break up with him.
He’d play it on full blast, too, and whenever Phil got to the chorus, the guy’s dog would get in on the action and start howling. 🙂
It was…sweet, and yet also painful.
Hopefully, wearing this limited edition eye and cheek kit will paint a different, but just as groovy, kind of love on my memory banks.
There’s a lot to like about it. It must have been designed with girls who love natural-looking pink cheeks and shimmery brown, beige and gold eyes in mind (like me!).
I want to try layering the eyeshadows on top of a shimmery bronze or matte black base, but I’m not sure if the pigments are potent enough for darker damsels. Wetting your brush first and applying them wet should increase the intensity.
All in all, I think Benefit’s got another cute kit here at a decent price — one that ought to work well with a wide range of lip colors, from nude to bright.
PRICE: $36
AVAILABILITY: Coming soon to Benefit counters, but available now online

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

P.S. Why can’t Mondays ever be easy, babe? Now I know why Garfield hated them so much…
I hope yours wasn’t too rough. Mine was OK, but it felt long. The best part was probably the bomb-@ss stir fry I made for dinner with baked teriyaki tofu, green onions and broccoli, seasoned with a little soy sauce and sesame oil.
So yum…
Now I’m just watching The Voice and admiring everybody’s makeup. 🙂 Have a good sleep.

Hi Karen, do you know exactly when this is going to be available in Benefit counters? 🙂
Karen says
Hi Kat,
I wish I had an exact date, but unfortunately I don’t. All I know is that it’s coming within the next couple months. It depends on the counter, so you might want to call your nearby one and ask when they get their holiday stuff in. It is available online now though!

Benefit always has such cute little kits! Good for you on the amazing sounding dinner! I brought sushi and steak to my parents house for their anniversary! (Sushi for me, steak for them! Luckily there’s an awesome new restaurant that has both!) I hate Mondays too, woke up with a sore throat and runny nose, guess its cold season!
Karen says
Hi Rachel,
Congrats to your parents on their anniversary. That’s so sweet that you brought them dinner, aww. 🙂 What kind of sushi did you eat? I loooooove sushi, especially the fun/crazy rolls.

I hope this gets available soon! A cute gifting set for the holidays.

Yes!

It’s a shame Benefit’s packaged sets always come with subpar eyeshadows. 🙁
Lauren says
Totally agree. Sometimes I use them, but when you have eyeshadows of superior quality like Urban Decay, INGLOT, etc. why would you reach for such sheer ones like Benefit’s?
Karen says
I think it really depends on what you want. For some gals/guys, sheer is easier to work with and the preferred level of coverage. When I’m in a rush, I like sheer shadows, mostly ’cause I don’t have to worry about blending so much.

I love Phil Collins! And a great Benefit set. I feel like I always get let down by their shadows in kits, but the rest of these products look great!
Monday was okay, but it was such a Monday. I had no motivation all day.

El Hub and I had an in-depth discussion on Phil last night, haha. I feel like his voice might not the most flexible in the world, but the lyrics and arrangements of his songs are really, really great. I mean, I can’t even tell you how many time I’ve rocked out to “Take, take me home…’cause I don’t remember!” Whoever was writing his music was incredibly talented.
Do you have a fave Phil song? If it’s Groovy Kind of Love this set is meant for you!

Loving the products but not a fan of the box design/colour/ print. It’s weird because I usually love Benefit’s packaging… :/
Karen says
Aww, really? It’s the same one purple/gold one they used for their advent calendar, I think.
Kim says
Oh, your poor neighbor. I know someone who played Nothing Compares 2U (Sinead O’Connor version) on a loop after a breakup. His roommate was far less understanding than you. 🙂
Your dinner sounds yummy and thank you for reminding me that I have broccoli to cook tonight.
Karen says
OMG that would make me completely insane, not gonna lie. I like that song (especially the Prince version), but on loop it would drive me nuts.
So, I have a new fave way to eat broccoli — sauteed with olive oil, thinly sliced garlic and crushed red pepper (you can put just a little if you don’t like heat). It’s so good!
How was your weekend? 🙂

What a great mix of colours, especially in the eyeshadows! I have to admit that I’m not loving the cardboard that surrounds the items though, seems a little unnecessary and cheap.
Karen says
Benefit’s been doing that for a while. It’s actually really sturdy!
