The first time Jennifer Lopez ignited a red carpet with her glowy skin look, millions of makeup junkies stood up and took note. Since then, a generation of women have sought to shine with their own versions of the J. Lo glow.
But the trick is finding products that deliver a perfect touch of metallic luster without entering the danger zone, as in that greasy guy at the club (you know the one) who wears hella gold chains and waaay too much hair gel.
That’s what I think most highlighters and powders high in shimmer and/or glitter do.
Greasy club guy = not the right kind of glow.
If you’re desperately seeking J. Lo’s glow, try on Benefit’s new One Hot Minute loose powder ($30).
It’s a golden beige with just a hint of pink, and it does soft, subtle sheen without the greasy club guy/disco-ball glitter effect.
Not exactly a highlighting powder or a bronzer, it’s more like an all-over face and body powder for adding a rosy champagne glow to the skin.
It comes with a flat, rounded edge brush in a bronze tin with a sifter top, and the shape of the brush makes it perfect for applying powder to the face or the body.
Is it for you?
Benefit had a rainbow of skin tones in mind when they designed One Hot Minute. The stuff rocks on a wide range of skin colors.
I’ve been loving it on my post-Hawaii tan — no ashiness whatsoever — and I thought it looked gorgeous on my friend Erin, who’s a pale beauty with fair skin and blond hair.
How to apply One Hot Minute
Since it’s for face AND body, you can wear it from head to toe.
For the face, start with a brush like Benefit’s Fantail Brush ($22).
“The fantail holds a minimal amount of product,” says Jared Bailey, a Benefit Beauty Artist at their San Francisco Chestnut Street store, “so you don’t overdo the application.”
Jared Bailey applying One Hot Minute across my forehead with Benefit’s Fantail Brush
Dipping the fantail into a pan of One Hot Minute to load it with powder, and then blow the brush head or tap it gently against the sink to unload some excess.
Apply with the brush to the upper cheek bones, sweeping down along the jaw line.
Finish with a swipe across the forehead, then another line down the bridge of the nose, and ending with swipes down each side of the neck from about the ear to the crook at the top of the chest.
TADA! Soft, subtle glow. 🙂
Jared and I
A kabuki brush does a fine job applying One Hot Minute to the body. I like Benefit’s Bronzing Brush ($22). It picks up more powder than the fantail and disperses the product over larger areas of skin.
When my pal Erin wore One Hot Minute to a wedding, she added extra dimension to her skin by applying it all over her arms and across her chest with a kabuki brush.
I’d even wear it on my legs, shoulders and maybe even my torso if my muffin top looked more like abs of steel.
One Hot Minute goes on sale this July at Sephora stores and online, and at Benefit stores and counters nationwide in October.
Now holla at your girl! How was your day? Any news to report? 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

No real news here. Made a tiramisu today! Nice to see you back in the hood! 🙂

Hey Karen!
This sounds gooood! I love Benefit’s blush in Dallas, gorgeous color, applies really well and lasts all day! Yay for Benefit! However with this product and others with sifters I don’t feel very comfortable– what is it meant to do really, I’m not sure I know how to work a sifter!! Help? 🙂
You look great in the pics btw, Go-Hawaii-Tan!!!

Hey Karen!,
Girrl I’am definitley feeling that bronzer, it’s gorgeous! and we girls can never have too many bronzers for Summer! So I actually have a video request for you! More like 2 🙂
1.) A what’s in my makeup bag video! I love these on youtube and you always pop into my head when I see them 🙂
2.) A video on how to wear both bronzer and blush together, I always try but it always seems too…muddy. Just a few suggestions for you since we’ve been missing your videos 🙂

Wow!!! Another new product from Benefit??? Didn’t they just launch Hello Flawless not so long ago?? But I have my Guerlain Meteorites, enjoying it as my highlighter. So I guess I could save some money for something else from other Summer Collections. 😉

During the night Jasper the manx pawed open a sliding window and escaped into the night. We just found her after a neighbour informed us she was stuck up a spruce tree three blocks away. Our kitten is now rescued! Maybe I’ll get One Hot Minute to celebrate.

Ahh, Benefit. Never fails to churn out the awesome products! I can’t wait until I can try this out in person 🙂

I’m not big on all over shimmer on the face. I’m too much of an oil ball by the end of the day. Looks like it would make a lovely highlight at the tops of the cheekbones though. I like that it’s light but there’s not that white powdery-ness you get when you’re too tan for your highlight.
And the wedding thing didn’t really go through. Mines and my sister’s was great cuz we played with some lash falsies but I really only did one of my mom’s friend’s make up cuz they didn’t have anytime to sneak into our van 😛 But this weekend, I’ll be doing my mom’s other friend’s makeup for sure. Your advice really helped btw, thanks so much Karen!

Oooooh, that looks really nice! I suppose it’s kind of like MAC’s beauty powders then?

Nothing too much. I decided to hand in my thesis in august, my partner for the work hasn’t been working at all so we’d fail anyway. Finals coming up so it’s a bit stressy…

Very nice! I like to get some glow on when I do my make up and lately ive been using a Neutrogena shimmer thing (that has been discontinued, I think). Hoarder that I am, I got 6 tubes of it when it went on sale. Gave 2 to my bestie and one to my sister for mothers day and kept 3 for me. Im down to 1.5 tubes and One Hot Fit is a great alternative.
Ugh today is Thursday and I had a little allergy scare. I got some tinted moisturizer (whose brand shall not be named) from my sister and used it for the first time today. I did a patch test last night and I didnt have any adverse reactions. 1-2 minutes after ive put the tinted moisturizer on my face, I felt my eyes water and my face sting. When I looked in the mirror, I had some little welts on my face and my eyes were bloodshot red. I quicly washed my face with some Cetaphil and took a Zyrtec. Im okay now but what a way to start my day! 🙂
Meream says
hmm i don’t think i’d look good with that. i’d look too much like the greasy bar guy.
but you look great. and jared is cute. 😀

Thank you for this test! I’m waiting for this powder now. Nice photo with Jared. =D

Well, speaking of Benefit products. I spent some time at the beloved Sephora yesterday & left with Benefit’s new Hello Flawless, powder foundation in Beige. It’s been getting a lot of hype lately & was even an editor’s pick in this month’s Allure so i felt i should see what it’s all about.
I’m wearing it today & am just not sold yet. As a sheer powder, it’s amazing, but they claim it can act like a foundation giving you full coverage if you apply it with a sponge. i have a million sheer powders so i was more interested in the foundation aspect of this powder. I used a sponge today, but don’t feel like it’s hiding imperfections like most foundations do & the more i tried to build up the coverage, the more cakey it looked. I was hoping a powder foundation would be a nice alternative for me for the summer as I typically wear a liquid. I definitely will continue to try it out before I know for sure if it’s for me or not. Have you tried it Karen? Has any of the other MBB Babes given it a go? What do you guys think? Any application tips for me?
Karen says
Hi Nicole15,
I reviewed it a few months back (click here for the Benefit Hello Flawless review) and liked it. I seemed to get a lot of coverage from the sponge… but if that’s not working for you I’d suggest trying it with a kabuki brush or maybe even a round powder applicator (like the kind you get with pressed powder). For heavier application of the product you might want to try to press the product into the skin with a slight back and forth (rolling motion) when you place the sponge or powder applicator on your skin. I do this when I want a really opaque look.

Oooh, the packaging alone is definitely worth a reason to check out (even if it really is all in the blinged-out sticker).
Karen says
Hi Vanessa,
Yah, I like the tin, too! 🙂
tatiana says
Holla! You look gorgeous!
Karen says
Hi Tatiana,
Thanks! I think that glow is due to the mimosa I downed before the pic, LOL!
Cindyrella says
WOWZA! Looks great on you! I’d love to see what it looks like on paler skin.
Karen says
Hi Cindyrella,
At the event I attended a few other bloggers were there with different skin tones. Check out the reviews from Christine at Temptalia, Lilan over at the Daily Cookie and Sonja at The Coveted to see the shades on paler skin.
Ann says
hmm I must try in sephora or Ulta first… but ur right looks more like a body all over highlighter.
Karen says
Hi Ann,
It actually looks really pretty on the face — no obnoxious glow at all! Try it once just for fun. The trick is to not over apply, me thinks. 🙂

omg the packaging is so gorgeous i want to cry xD i really wanna try this soon!

Hi Rachel,
Aww, I love it when the kitties get all snuggly in the bed. Tabs is currently sleeping right next to my desk.
What a life! Sometimes I wish I was a cat. 🙂
Got any plans yet for the weekend?
Nicole15 says
Thanks Karen! Feel silly that i forgot all about the review you did in Feb. on Hello Flawless. But then again, I can’t remember yesterday so it doesn’t surprise me! LOL 🙂
Karen says
Hi Nicole15,
No worries, girl! I can barely remember what I did five minutes ago, LOL! I blame it on the interwebz… it’s ruining my short term memory.
Laurie says
Wow, so excited about this! It looks great on you, very glowy in a natural way. What eye makeup are you wearing in the photo? It’s pretty!
Karen says
Hi Laurie,
I’m wearing a bunch of Benefit stuff: Birthday Suit Creaseless Cream Shadow, Velvet Eyeshadows in Bikini Line and Where There’s Smoke, Bad Gal Waterproof liner and Bad Gal mascara. I’m thinking of doing a tutorial on the look… I liked how it turned out, too. 🙂
How are things with you? Enjoying the new job? Oh!!! And have you been keeping up with the new So You Think You Can Dance season? It looks like it’s gonna be pretty good. 🙂
Laurie says
Hey Karen! Ooh, do do a tutorial:) I am happy to see the velvet shadows are available now – they look wonderful!
Things are great, thanks for asking! I’ve been working a lot, but am hoping for a fun, relaxing summer. And summer tv – so lots of SYTYCD!! I think this season is going to be good too – I’m excited for it to really get going!

Hi Sonja,
It was nice to meet you, too! Hopefully we’ll run into each other again soon. 🙂

Oh no. I’m going to have to buy makeup again. I promised myself I’d slow down after getting that Dior eyeshadow quad (damn you airport shops!!) but how can I resist that? I’ve been trying bronzing powders for a while now, but never found anything that worked well with my ultra fair skin and dark hair – looks like this might be it! Plus, how adorable is that box??
Good day so far, after months of sending CVs I’ve just found myself not one but TWO internships! 😀

Yes, that would be great! Would love to get together and chat about beauty blogging! xx

I work for benefit in our cute boutiques in the UK and we are all so excited for one hot minute !! I am so happy you did a feature on it just so i could see pictures of what it looks like on before the other girls at my store !!xx
Karen says
Hi Marni,
Yay, another Benefit girl! I really like this powder. It adds just a lil’ something-something.
What are your favorite items from the line? I love the Creaseless Cream Shadows. 🙂
Shanda says
Do you still like this stuff?
Sammi says
If i were to get this it would be as an all over the body sort of thing, but im glad to hear its great for the face too. I’m not sure my oily bits would like it much though 😛 Oh, and isn;t Jared just the cutest thing?! hahaha
