I read about this guy somewhere a while back who said that he fell in love with SO MANY ladies on Instagram because of the Valencia filter…
You know, I can’t blame him, because that Valencia filter? Damn. Wow. It’s like the most glamorous, flattering light ever.
I can haz my own Valencia personal filter??
That’s sort of the idea behind the new $38 BECCA Soft Light Blurring Powder in Golden Hour — that’s it’s a portable, personal 24/7 photo filter.
Is it really transparent?
It’s part of BECCA’s spring collection, and the effect is supposed to be like basking in buttery, perfect twilight (but not the kind starring Edward and Bella). The 0.35-oz. jar is available now in BECCA’s permanent collection.
It’s a luminous loose powder with a satin finish that blurs pores and scatters light. BECCA calls the color transparent, but some folks say that they can see a peachy tint on very light and very deep skin. I like the way it works on my NC42 tan, but that’s something to keep in mind.
Marvelous for minimalist skin looks
I like sheer foundation, now more than ever, and I love tinted moisturizer. I love going out with just a little bit of luminous primer like BECCA Backlight on my skin and a pinch of powder to cut down the shine. If you like that too, check out this powder.
It looks bangin’ on simple skin looks and ever so slightly blurs pores so that your skin doesn’t look fake.
It also doesn’t look like powder when you wear it… But let me clarify that. It doesn’t look like powder when you wear it with minimal skin looks. In fact, I can’t see it at all — not in my lines — and it totally keeps my oily areas under wraps (the center of my forehead, on my nose and on my chin). It controls oil like a mo-fo.
But if you’re looking for a powder to set full-coverage foundation with…
It starts to look obvious. I can see it, so I don’t think it layers well with full-coverage makeup. It starts looking shiny and heavy, and I’m just not into it, especially with full-coverage matte foundation and heavier makeup looks, or when I’m doing intense concealing on my cheeks and around my mouth.
The final verdict
I like this. It’s good stuff, but only for a very specific (minimal makeup) look. I wouldn’t go there if you’re into full-coverage foundation or have coloring that’s very fair or deep.

It could look like a dupe for Wet n wild’s reserve your cabana 🙂

I’ve never heard of that product! Is it a setting powder?
Ditte K. says
Really? You should try it, it’s around 3-4 dollars, and it gives a soft finish, kind of like an Hourglass ambient lighting powder. Not for setting, just for the finish, like this one. Although lots of ppl use it for setting their undereye too 🙂
I can’t believe Miss Karen makeup-guru hasn’t heard of it :))

I’m not a full coverage foundation lover, so that could work for me. Not sure I need another powder just now, but when my Nars runs out (and it will soon), I’ll check this out. Thanks for the review!

You’re welcome. I’m always looking for a new foundation. Which ones do you like? Sounds like we have a similar foundation style!

My all time favourite one is Mac Face and Body. Wore it at my wedding, as I wanted a natural look and did a great job! I’m combination skin and use a bit of powder in the t-zone with this. I’m recently enjoying the Perricone MD no foundation serum with Shisheido Synchro Skin only in the centre of my face. Another good one for me is the Bobbi Brown Longwear in a compact. I like trying foundations all the time though as I mix them up to achieve the natural finish I want :). Which ones are top three for you? xx

Hm, I currently only use illuminating powders for filming after doing a full coverage foundation, so I don’t think that it would be for me. It looks amazing on you though.

Looks amazing on you Karen <3

I’ve been so curious about this product!
I almost bought it, but I’m glad I waited for a review!
I’m wondering how it would look on my skin tone since I do prefer a minimal makeup look these days. Good to know it controls oil like a mo fo! lol
jenna says
karen how would you compare the finish of this (without foundation) to the chanel loose powder?
Kim says
It sounds like something I’d like. Always the queen of minimalist makeup and can generally use the T-zone oil control. 🙂 I remember being such a fan of Becca’s promo pics because of the beautiful skin on all the models. I know I would not get that without hours of photoshop but it was delightfully aspirational. 🙂

On a side note I’d really like becca to bring back their TM. It was pretty much perfect for me, hardly any coverage, glow, and SPF out the wazoo. Perfect for just adding a bit of concealer!
