It’s cherries, cherries everywhere as Laura Mercier boards the cherry train with her Cherries Noir fall makeup collection of colors inspired by 1940s Hollywood glam.
Due on counters nationwide September 1, the collection includes six matte and shimmer Eye Colour eye shadows ($22 each), one Illuminating Powder quad for cheeks ($35) and five Lip Velvet ($22) lipsticks.
Like last week’s MAC Cult of Cherry, Cherries Noir features some really striking lip products I think they’ll be the stars of the show.
A friend of mine who works for Laura Mercier said the new Lip Velvets aren’t exactly lipsticks but rather lip stains packaged like lip glosses, with textures similar to LM’s Glace lip gloss.
With a demi-matte finish (semi-matte, halfway between a matte lipstick and a shiny gloss), the wine, berry and plum shades look easy to wear. If you’ve been looking for a lip that leans toward dark without going full-on vampire, look out for Cherries Noir.
Cherries Noir Lips
- Cassis: deep mulberry
- Cherry Blossom: earthy berry
- Mocha Rouge: tawny brick red
- Naked Rose: neutral peachy pink
- Royal Plum: muted wine
I’m looking forward to these and will stalk Nordstrom until I get my hands on ’em!
What do you think about Laura Mercier’s Cherries Noir? Cherry overkill or can’t wait?
I had a good time watching Pineapple Express last night. Seth Rogen isn’t exactly C. Bale, but if you liked Superbad and Harold & Kumar, you might like this, too. It was strange and funny (“thug life!”), and I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.
Today, I’m just taking care of boring errands (blech!) like laundry and grocery shopping. What are you up to?

Would you say the whole matte look is appropriate for someone in their early 20s? I think the whole matte thing is a bit aging…however, this “demi-matte” seems a lot shinier and softer–not so muted. I can’t decide whether or not it would be right for me. I guess I should just go out and try a few of them to see how it looks.
Karen says
Hi Okyanus,
I think it is. Then again, I came of age during the 90s (when matte lips were all the rage) so I might be biased.
I vote for you trying it! Wear it for a few days and see if it grows on you. You never know… plus if you don’t like it you can always wash it off. Ahh, that’s the beauty of makeup!

Hey Karen
I want to but a set of brushes any recommendations for a line or lines to choose from? Thanks a bunch for the heads up.
Karen says
Hi Kerry,
I really like MAC brushes. I’ve had mine for years. They’re sturdy, hardly shed and perform great. I highly recommend spending the $ for the regular, long handled brushes. I’ve tried the short handled brushes from the holiday sets and the quality isn’t as good as the brushes you purchase separately.
My first brushes were:
1. 217 blending brush for wet/dry eye products
2. 252 for all over shadow application
3. 224 for crease color and blending
4. 266 for brows/lining
5. 190 foundation brush (although I am not crazy about this one now… I prefer the 182 buffer brush for liquid foundation)
6. 129 powder blush brush
I think these are a good, basic brush starter set.
If the MAC brushes are out of your price range then Sonia Kashuk has good brushes as well. I prefer the pricier ones she has with the black handles over the cheaper white handled brushes. The black handled ones feel softer and perform better!
Hope this helps. 🙂

Cherries, it’s all about them! Even my mineral makeup brand has an eyeliner called Black Cherry. I’m recovering from the hurricane and tomorrow is back to school day. Let the madness begin, I say!

A little off topic, but I think you´ll understand that SOME things are more important than others: I saw “The Dark Knight” yesterday and now I know why you talk about Christian Bale all the time. Yum!
But I´ll be fair, you saw him first…sigh 😉

Ooh… pretty…
How’s the wear time on those? I love lip stains.
Kerry says
Thanks Karen
It is a start I think I will start with the all over shadow, crease colour blending and powder blush. And then continually add to the cllection (:
thanks again Kerry

Hi Karen!
I just recently bought the 217 myself, and love it! 🙂 Definitely a brush to have in the collection! Did you decide on the CoC l/g today??
Karen says
Hi Dao,
I’m glad to hear you made it through the hurricane okay. How was school today?
Karen says
Hi Nell,
OMG! The next movie you had to see is American Psycho. C. Bale plays a total, well, psycho. There’s one scene where he’s running around wearing only high tops. Sure he’s carrying a chain saw, but you can easily ignore it with a lil’ bit of imagination! 😉
Karen says
Hi Megan,
I know! I am itching to try these, too. I haven’t yet but will let you know when they have ’em on counter. They look really easy to apply and wear.
Karen says
Hi Kerry,
You’re welcome! You have a fun makeup journey ahead of you… brushes make a world of difference. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Daya,
Woot! I *love* the 217. It’s so versatile, and I use it for so many things — concealer, dry and wet eyeshadows, blending, crease work… What do you like to use it for?
I ended up going to Lightly Ripe lipstick and Rich & Ripe Lipglass. I wanted to put up an FOTD today but had to do a bunch of stuff when I got home so it will have to go up tomorrow. 🙂
Hope you’re having a good night… I’m just waiting for The Hills to come on!

I was all excited about that lip velvet and then was sooooo disappointed to see that Cassis is already “sold out”. What’s up with that? Any idea?
