I was just walking along the sidewalk today, minding my business, when a Sephora store reached out and grabbed me by the eyeballs!
Well, it was the window, really … a display for the new Tarina Tarantino Beauty collection (exclusive to Sephora).
As soon as I saw the rows of pink compacts and faux diamonds (and wiped up the bit of drool on my chin), I knew what I needed to do!
WHEE! It’s swatch time. 🙂
A few observations and items of note about the collection…
- Since Tarina’s jewelry’s so colorful and quirky, I was expecting crazy makeup colors too. Well, it has some of that, but there’s also a solid core of really wearable neutrals, and even the edgier purples and pinks are still tastefully done.
- The playful yet wearable vibe reminds me of Anna Sui and Paul & Joe.
- Big ups for the Eye Dream Hypershadows ($19), Dollskin Cheek blush ($25) and Dollskin Powder ($32); all of the powder products feel finely milled, soft and apply with concentrated pigmentation. It almost felt like I was playing with Dior!
- The Eye Dream Hyperliners ($17) are creamy smooth ala Urban Decay’s Glide-On Eye Pencils, but instead of setting after a minute like UD’s, they stay creamy and moveable.
- If you’re a fan of Stila’s Smudge Pots, you might like the Magic Hour Cream Shadows ($19). I think they have a similar texture and color payoff.
- I can see Tarina’s not a big fan of matte lipsticks as all of her Conditioning Lipsheens ($22) have either a creamy or a shimmery finish.
- Hold on to your sensitive noses because the Gem Glosses ($19) have a strong fruit punch scent that … made my stomach churn (I have a VERY sensitive nose, though).
Here are swatches of the color products. Lemme know if you’re interested in seeing the face and highlighting powders, too.

Emily says
LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! This is all RIGHT up my alley – girly but totally wearable with enough colour to give a princess look without being too “little girl”-esque!
Karen says
Yah, I was surprised how accessible the colors are! 🙂 Do you think you might pick anything up?
Emily says
the lovelies that stand out the most to me are:
hyper liner in locket book
hypershadows in bangle, rivet, and amulet
cream shadow in purple velvet
gloss in bobby pin
and i love that there’s a gloss named “disco nap”!! i cracked myself up when i read the name.
we’ll see what my budget allows me to splurge on from the list. if i had to pick just one, it would more than likely be that cream shadow! soooo pretty!
Karen says
Ha, ha, I love the name of that gloss too! 🙂 I’ve got my eye on Pom Pom… we’ll see if I can get over the smell.
Emily says
i’ll have to check out this smell you mention – would that be weird to just smell it at sephora?
“no no.. don’t mind me. I’m just here to smell your lip gloss.”
😉
Karen says
I actually do that all the time! Walk in, sniff, walk out. 🙂
Celine says
Oooohh I’m loving brooch!
.-= Celine’s last blog post… maravi: Why do nursing students feel the need to document every single class in dozens of pictures? You giving a shot! Oh wow-I DON’T CARE =-.
Karen says
I like that color too. I hear it calling me…
Rachel says
i’m not even a big pink fan [hello packaging] but when i hit up my local sephora and one of my favorite employees did a gorgeous pink lip look for me, i had to grab it! i left with the lipstick in showroom, and the two lip glosses disco nap and pom pom. and i have to say i love how they smell! this brand was quite the pleasant surprise for me 😀
Karen says
Hi Rachel,
Do the lipsticks have a taste/scent?
Rachel says
none that i could detect 🙂 i would say you should definitely give them a shot. i’m not that big of a lipstick girl, but these are creamy, moisturizing, and somewhat sheer, which equals super wearable in my book!
Karen says
LOVE creamy and sheer. I’m going to spend some time contemplating the colors and perhaps head back today. 🙂
Catherine says
Oooh, fabulous swatches! I think I need Parasol! It’s so pretty… I didn’t like NARS Orgasm or Deep Throat, maybe this is the pinky gold I’ve been looking for!?
I’m so tempted by the conditioning lipsticks too… have you worn them yet? I’m always looking for moisturizing lipsticks!
.-= Catherine’s last blog post… NOTW: Zoya Happi Princess French =-.
Karen says
Ha! I almost bought Parasol, but then I talked myself out of it because it reminded me of NARS Orgasm. 🙂
I didn’t stick around to try the lipsticks… I was a little overwhelmed with all the colors and kind of shut down, LOL! I’ll probably go back in a few days when I have a better sense of what I want.
How are you feeling? I hope you’re doing better today.
Catherine says
Hahaha – I’m addicted to those kind of colors but Orgasm was too frosty for me. I have Laura Mercier Orange Blossom already, but I’m hoping Parasol has a little extra oomph? Plus the gold shimmer is just so pretty…
Oooh, I totally know that feeling. Can’t wait for your thoughts though. 😀
Aww, thanks for asking. Unfortunately the back is still in a knot and I got a migraine on top of it, so I’m just taking the evening easy. How are you doing?
.-= Catherine’s last blog post… NOTW: Zoya Happi Princess French =-.
Karen says
I’m good! Last night I tried to go to bed early, but ended up staying up late to read my new book.
Hopefully your migraine has left the building! Those are the worst. 🙁
Catherine says
Hey Karen! Sadly the migraine hasn’t left, though it’s considerably better now after some pills. I ended up going out for dinner by myself (SO went out climbing with friends) and decided to do a little shopping at Sephora with the gift card I got for Christmas. I decided to get Parasol blush and it is soooooo pretty!! I just put it on and it’s everything I wanted NARS Orgasm (too frosty) and Deep Throat (too flat) to be!
And apparently they’re giving out the free Tarina Tarantino bracelets to VIBs in store too! I got the red one and it’s surprisingly cute!

Rae says
Ooh! I saw the TT line last week and hated it, but your swatches make me want to change my mind. Want to, but not actually change — even such gorgeous pigmentation and colours cannot make me love such packaging! It’s cute, sure, but pink + rhinestones is not my thing 😛
*tries very hard to believe self so that this no-buy can keep going*
.-= Rae’s last blog post… Finally, a FOTD! Inspiration: Sephora Spring 2010 =-.
Karen says
Seriously, just give in. Life is too short for a no buy!!

I am loving the look of the Hyperliners and I am surprised that she has such a big selection for her line. Hopefully, the Vancouver Sephoras stock her line. I have been a fan of her jewelry and accessories for a long time.

Karen says
The Hyperliners apply with lots of pigmentation and creaminess, and they move a lot. Might be good for smudgy looks or for layering!
Mariah says
You are SO AWESOME for getting these swatches!!! I’ve been wanting to see what this line looked like! I hear so much about it, but for me, it’s all in the swatching! The liners and lipsticks look the best to me!
KAREN YOU ROCK!
Karen says
Hope you find a few things to take home with you, girl! 🙂
Bine says
These eyedream hyperliners scream urban decay 24/7 glide-on pencil to me! Exactly the same colors: from the left:
zero
oil-slick
corrupt
1999
ransom
binge
Karen says
I got that same vibe from them too. They seem to move a lot more than the UD ones, though!
jeannie says
I can totally see how this collection would grab you by the eyeballs! WOW colors and sparkles galore!
.-= jeannie’s last blog post… it’s her birthday =-.
Karen says
RIGHT? Do you plan on picking anything up?
Vonvon says
Karen!!!! All I can do while scrolling down the page was my jaw opening wider and wider, my eyes almost popping out…oohhinggg and ahhinggg away at the photos of the products!
Love the packaging, then the pink ‘theme’, and the colors are so gorgeous and pigmented! They are so beautiful…..

Karen says
It’s a very nice line, yah? What do you like best from the swatches?
NINA says
Come to Mama, Hyperliners. I can just imagine the looks that can be created using those things….
As expected, I am drawn to the eye stuff. I probably have 70% eye and 30% the rest of my face stuff in my stash. :d
Karen says
I have a weakness for eye makeup too. Although my blush stash seems to be exponentially expanding as of late, hmmm.
Do you think you might grab any of these?
Happy Wednesday, btw!
NINA says
Happy Wednesday to you too!
I am thinking of buying the hyperliners in Amethyst Android and Spark of Envy.
I also might get the Dollskin Cheek Carved Rose or Feather.
Must swatch …. but they are dreamy lovely …
Marce says
IDK about the packaging, but I see lots of pretty colours! How I envy all thee who have access to Sephora’s treasure! LOL 😀

This is a new line so you never know what’ll happen… maybe some day it’ll be available in your country, you never know!
Stef says
Your hand looks like a party I want to go to!
Thanks for doing this, I’m really surprised so many are so wearable. I was expecting it to be maybe a bit too young for me (the packaging is adorable, but not really my style). And thanks for the heads up on the gloss smell. My hooter is super sensitive too!
.-= Stef’s last blog post… MAC Give Me Liberty of London Unveiling party =-.
Karen says
It’s VERY strong. I’m gonna reserve judgment ’till I can actually try some… who knows, maybe it’ll fade quickly!
lexi says
I did take a look at her line last Friday at my local Sephora. I really liked bow (matte pink) e/s but I’m wondering if it would look either chalky or like I had a skin allergy if I wore it. Also, I don’t think I’d like the eyeliner – cute colors but I like UD’s because it sets and will stay. I’ll take a second look at her lipsticks – NOT a matte fan either!
Karen says
I think the lipsticks are some of the strongest items in the line.
Did you get a chance to play with the face powders? They looked pretty darn good!
lexi says
Yeah I’m all for moisturizing lippies! I quickly glanced this line but I’ll have to go back with a more detailed investigating eye!
Trisha says
Oh! Everything’s so pigmented! I like that.

Karen says
Yah! Gotta love when they make it easy to make the color POP!
HC says
haha! I love how your hands look after a swatch rampage! Mine are like that too, but it actually moves UP the arm as well :X
I want to like this new line but I’m staying away b/c I do NOT need another addiction. Sigh!
.-= HC’s last blog post… Sharpie, the new eyeliner??! =-.
Karen says
Ha! It was raining yesterday so I had long sleeves on. 🙂
HC says
OH and did you see the green face powder? What’s that for…??
.-= HC’s last blog post… Sharpie, the new eyeliner??! =-.
Karen says
It’s to neutralize redness. I’d probably pop it around the nose and mouth.
HC says
AH. DUH! Thanks! hahaha I saw this little 3 yr old boy playing with the green powder the other day. Cute but imagine how many germs are on/in that compact now!

Glosslizard says
I like the cream shadow in “Golden Shadow”! How do the cream shadows and liners wear (on your hand, anyway)?
Amy says
OMGOMGOMG!!!! I LOVE TARINA TARANRINO!!! I’ve been a fan of hers since 2001! I want to fall in love with this collection! Karen daahling, please keep us updated on this collection (i.e., did you purchase any of it? do you like it? how does it compare to other brands like MAC?).
Thank you for the excellent swatches!!! You just keep my makeup addiction rolling along :).
Saku says
O wow I never heard of her, but I love her pink hair or wig.
CynthiaCCC says
I’d love to see full lip swatches for Prong, Studio 200, Cameo, and Queen Alice. I’m just not a bright color eyeshadow person, so those aren’t doing it for me at all. But I’m still looking for the perfect rose-berry colored lipstick–not too bright, not too sparkly, not too light, not too dark. Ah, will I ever find it?
marisol says
I saw this line last night at the Sephora on Union Street and was mesmerized by it. I swatched a couple of the eyeshadows and really liked the quality of them. I forsee some of these goodies becoming part of my stash when my birthday comes around. You know my rule about my birthday right? Well, during my birthday month, I buy myself whatever I want without remorse. I have done some damage & I am going to be like the Tazmanian Devil at Sephora in June.

It’s funny that her signature is pink and the marketing promo is a pink blitz but the collection itself is heavy on the cool colors. I mean fine with me warm colors (like that pink hair!) are very hard to pull off (i know from exeperience!)
