Is it wrong to want Sunday brunch on a Wednesday afternoon? — or to get a little dolled up and don colorful makeup in the middle of the week? I hope not, because today the Benefit Sunday Funday palette and I have reservations. We’re doing a daytime/brunch look together featuring eyes in purple and bronze.
To test the versatility of the brushes that come with the kit, I told myself not to use any other brushes for this look, which was tough because I’m really picky about my eye brushes. I usually ditch the ones that come with palettes like this one, but the Sunday Funday brushes actually shine like stars. I wouldn’t toss my best brushes for ’em, but they should be great for trips and purses when you want to travel light.
The Benefit Sunday Funday Palette
Despite the palette’s name, I’m guessing these colors are safe to wear any day of the week, ha!
Most of the products I use for this tutorial hail from Benefit Sunday Funday, but if you happen to have any similar shades from other brands, feel free to put ’em to work!
First, grab your goodies!
Makeup for the eyes…
- A neutral eyeshadow primer like Benefit Stay Don’t Stray
- Toasty Liner from Sunday Funday
- The Pretty in Plum Eyeshadow from Sunday Funday
- The Shimmering Bronze Eyeshadow from Sunday Funday
- The Pink Satin Eyeshadow from Sunday Funday
- A black mascara like Benefit BADgal Waterproof Mascara
Your tools…
- Both of the dual-tipped brushes from Sunday Funday
- A good lash curler (lately I’ve been liking the Benefit ProCurl, but Shu’s curler also works great)
Benefit Sunday Funday makeup swatches on NC35 skin from left: Benetint, Hoola, Toasty Liner, Shimmering Rose, Shimmering Bronze, Pink Satin, Light Champagne, Pretty in Plum
Eye makeup, eye makeup, 1-2-3
1. Let’s start by prepping our lids. To prep mine and boost the wear time of the shadows, I start by smoothing Benefit Stay Don’t Stray primer over the entire lid with a finger. Then, with the Toasty Eyeliner, I draw a solid block of color directly on top of the lid area (which ramps up the richness of the shadow colors even MORE). Since I plan to smudge it, baby (aww, yeah!), in the next step, I kinda rush through it.
2. Color me bad. With one of Sunday Funday’s fluffy eyeshadow brushes, I pat Pretty in Plum directly on top of the liner, and, with the same brush, draw the color up into the crease.
3. Deepen the crease. To tone down the purple just a smidge and create the illusion of more depth around the eyes, I sweep Shimmering Bronze into the crease with the other Sunday Funday fluffy eyeshadow brush. Then, with a finger, I draw the color up toward my brow bone to mellow out any harsh lines.
4. Open up and say “eye” with a spot of shimmery shadow. For a wide-eyed look (insomniacs like me use this trick all the time!), I dab a finger directly into the pan of Pink Satin to pick up some color, and then apply a dot of it at the center of the lid. No need to blend out edges here because Pink Satin should settle on its own after a few minutes.
5. Let’s line the lower lash line to make our eyes POP! First, I line it with Toasty, and then I smudge Shimmering Bronze directly on top using the Sunday Funday angled eyeshadow brush.
6. Mascara time! As a finishing touch, I curl my lashes with the Benefit ProCurl Curler and apply three coats of Benefit BADgal Waterproof Mascara both to my upper and lower lashes (now bat them prettily!).
Sunday Funday lips and cheeks
Sunday Funday even comes with makeup for lips and cheeks (I swear this thing has it all).
Here, I dot and blend Sunday Funday’s Benetint on my cheeks, contouring the area below the apples with Hoola and swiping Shimmering Rose gloss on my lips.
And there you have it! 🙂 Sunday makeup on a Wednesday afternoon.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Gummy says
Oh my! How funny – I was just wondering how to use this beautiful plum eyeshadow (it’s from Korres, the plum color) I have, and decided to check out your blog, and boom! =D I really like this palette, but I have similar colors and would feel bad if I splurged on it, hee hee…
Would you say the shimmering bronze is close to Urban Decay’s Smog? I’m not sure what to pair the plum with, but this gives me an idea for something that I could try (and I’m not brave when it comes to bright eye colors. ^_^ Maybe one day, but not there yet…!)
Ah, but the whole Sunday Funday looks GREAT on you! =) You are so talented, always!
Anyways, thanks! Have a lovely day – the weather is HOT down here in SoCal today and it’s finally starting to feel like summer after last week’s row of overcast mornings. Thank goodness for a little bit of a/c! ^_^

Karen says
Hi Gummy,
They’re similar, so you could it to replace the bronze shade, but there are subtle differences. Shimmering Bronze is a touch more coppery (like a penny!), while Smog is more of a neutral golden brown.
Tiffany says
I can’t wait to copy this look! I might try it tommorrow since I have plans after work.
I used the palette once last week but was disappointed in the shadows – I realized I should have used a primer first!
Karen says
Primer totally helps. If you want to bump up the colors even more you could also always wet your brush first with MAC Fix+!
Tiffany says
I tried it today. With the primer and the liner underneath it looked amazing!
Karen says
YAY!! I’m glad it worked out for you. Where are you headed after work? I hope it’s something fun.
Tiffany says
we’re going to the botanical gardens – they do a cocktails in the garden thing on Thurs evenings! 🙂
How is your Thursday going?
Karen says
Mine felt like it took FOREVER. TGIF, though! I can’t wait for the weekend.
Katie says

Amber says
This is super-pretty. I keep forgetting to try your little eyeliner trick in #1 but I want to! I’m thinking this weekend.
BTW, I nabbed the Naked palette the second I got Sephora’s in-stock notification this morning! I feel giddy and only a little guilty. It’s such a good deal that not buying it would be like losing money. 😉

You will NOT be disappointed with that palette. I really is all that and a bag of chips… especially if you love your neutrals!
Debbie P. says
This is perfect! You rock, and thank you for posting this for us.

You’re very welcome. Let me know if you try the look!
Michelle says
So pretty – loving all of these palettes!
Karen says
Hi Michelle,
Me too!
melissa says
ooooh girlfriend this look is right up my alley! i’ve been rockin purple all week-i’m tempted to break out my UD get baked palette for this one! you did an amazing job on this, the colors look awesome with your coloring, plus the plum color is to die for! i’ve never tried the eyeliner on the lid trick, (i’m blonde and pretty fair) but i am definitely going to try it tomorrow to amp up the purple– thanks for that tip! woohoo so excited!
Karen says
Hi Melissa,
I loooove the Get Baked palette, and you can do something very similar with the Get Baked shades. Try Bourbon liner on the lid, pop a brown or gold shade on top, and do a lil’ bit of teal in the crease. Or, pop the teal on top of Bourbon and do gold or brown in the crease.
melissa says
that sounds perfect! i’m gonna give it a go for tomorrow…TGIF!
snoopysteph says
What what?! Eyeliner all over the lid? So gonna try that in the morning. 🙂 Thanks for the tutorial, I always learn something new from you!
Karen says
Hi Snoopysteph,
How did it go?
Kelly says
Great look and tutorial, thanx! Would love to have this palette!!
Karen says
Hi Kelly,
Sure thing! 🙂
Nina says
I love the purple eyeshadow and it looks awesome on you! Must buy this palette! 🙂
Karen says
Thanks, Nina!
Yay, I’m glad to hear you like this palette. Benefit makes the most tempting stuff, don’t they?
Kim says
Karen, you’re a wonder! I would have broken out in hives if someone told me to put eyeliner on my whole lid, but once again you’ve shown that the scariest sounding things are awesome if you try them. I also love the tip about dabbing a pink dot in the center of the lid. So clever! Thanks for this! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Kim,
Glad you liked this tutorial. If you try out the look please let me know how it turns out!
Kim says
I actually did a version of this on Saturday (subbing pink shades for the purple, ’cause you know I have that Rocky Balboa thing going on with purple eyes). It did turn out really well though! Thanks again!! 🙂
Scientific Housewife says
I’ve never thought to put eyeliner down before eyeshadow to vamp up the color, what a great idea!
Karen says
Hi Scientific Housewise,
Oh yeah! It’s a great way to breath new life into old colors.
kelley says
These palettes are amazing!!! esp those glosses, i wonder if benefit would release them independently, cuz i kinda already have those colours so no point collecting more *but soo tempted ><*
.-= kelley's last blog post… curry or a subze =-.
Karen says
Hi Kelley,
That did a great job with the glosses in both kits. They’re really pigmented, feel comfy on the lips and have a nice shine to ’em.
Are you a Benefit fan?
Van says
I love this look Karen!!! I love the shimmering eye shadow dot on the lid, what a great tip 😀
I’ll have to try that next time I go all out with my eye makeup, I’ve done the shimmering lip gloss dot on the center on my bottom lip but never tried my lids, can’t wait 🙂
Karen says
Hi Van,
It’s one of my fave eyeshadow tricks because it’s so easy. 🙂
Meghan says
i bought the other benefit palatte that just came out, but now i’m gonna have to get this one too!
Karen says
Hi Meghan,
Hot! They’re both very nice palettes to have around. Have you had the chance to play with Scene Queen yet?
Lisa S. says
Fab tutorial! I hadn’t ordered this palette yet even though I really wanted it, so I think this just
tipped the scale for me.
Karen says
Great! Let me know what you think of it once you pick it up!
S says
You make this look so easy. I would have never thought that a darker base would make the purple appear more rich. Cannot wait to try this for a weekend dinner date with Husband. Thank you!!!

Karen says
You’re welcome! Have fun on your date. 🙂
Emily says

Benetint is *very* cool. It was one of my first blushes.
Have you tried it yet? It’s actually very easy to use.
