Tom Ford must moonlight as a matte scientist…because his new 13-piece holiday Color Collection is all about matte!
[crickets]
Get it…? Matte scientist? Sorry, I know that was a totally substandard pun.
Let me try again…
This year, Tom Ford is channeling Spencer Tracy with an all-star cast of matte lipsticks to make sure we’re all living in a matte, matte, matte, matte world!
Get it? Spencer Tracy? Because there was a movie…
Never mind.
Last try…
I am so matte right now.
(How matte are you?)
I am so matte right now that Tom Ford could hire me to be one his eight new Lip Color Matte lipsticks, badum-tish!
Good enough! 🙂
Lips take center stage in the new 13-piece Tom Ford Holiday 2014 Color Collection (Tom also released some other holiday sets and perfumes), with a new line of eight Lip Color Mattes.
Sadly, they’re a double take-inducing $50 each, but day-um! — Tom did some serious work on these because I think every one is absolutely freakin’ beautiful.
Crazy pigmented, they lay down color like Tabs lays down for a nap — smoothly — and without any patchiness in sight.
As if that wasn’t enough, the lightweight formula lasts a good, long time. I haven’t had them on long enough to clock them down to the minute, but I’m going to say six or seven hours (they remind me of a thicker, longer-lasting version of the Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Intense Long-Wear Lip Colours).
I’m crushing Hulk-caliber hard on the nude shades in First Time, Pink Tease and Pussycat. Oh! — but that bright orangey red (Flame) is also a stunner.
For eyes, Tom included two glossy, neutral cream shadows as spicy counterparts to the matte lipsticks.
Warm, bronzed brown Cream Color for Eyes in Spice, and Platinum, a cool-toned platinum with silver shimmer ($42 each), complement the lip look nicely.
Tom’s cream shadows have a certain something I haven’t seen anywhere else. It’s almost like they look wet on the lids, like a beachy Bond Girl’s eyes as she emerges from the ocean, and they’re a breeze to apply. All I do is tap and blend a bit on my lids with a finger. That’s it.
A few re-promoted pieces from the permanent line round out the collection, namely Tom’s bad-@ss Eye Defining Pen, Nail Lacquer in Viper (one of my all-time nail polish faves) and Nail Lacquer in Bordeaux Lust.
I like Tom’s take on holiday. Coupling glossy eyes with matte lips here spices things up and keeps them interesting, but the whole picture they paint isn’t too complicated or fussy.
I get a distinctly sexy (and expensive), cool-girl vibe from the Tom Ford Holiday 2014 Color Collection. I can totally see a gal in skintight leather leggings, a white tee, Loubs and a Burberry trench coat rocking it.

Agata says
How pretty. The first four shades are totally me!
Karen says
Pink Tease is totally you! You’d rock Spice, too. It would look pretty with your blue eyes!
Agata says
You know my makeup taste pretty well cause Pink Tease would def be my first pick, but $50….
Karen says
Tom Ford hurts so good! I do have to say that every lipstick that I’ve ever completely fallen in love with from him, I’ve carried around with my in my purse for months. I’ve also finished a tube Sable Smoke, which never, ever happens.
Laarni says
Black Dahlia has captured my heart! It sux it’s LE.
Karen says
Good choice for fall, Laarni. If you happen to have Platinum, Black Dahlia looks great with it!
Kristina Vieweg says
You are so creative with your writing, I just love it! I usually don’t opt for nudes but I agree those couple look like perfection!
Karen says
Hi Kristina,
Aww, thanks girl! So, I’m really picky with my nudes too, and Tom Ford makes some of my faves (Sable Smoke, SWOOON!). He does nude lips to perfection, and you won’t be disappointed.
How’s your week going? Got any plans yet for Halloween?
Kristina Vieweg says
Sable smoke, check! 🙂
Yes, we are going trick or treating with the kiddos on Friday, I can’t wait to sample (I mean inspect) the candy lol!
Alice Ann says
I’m all about Pussycat, Velvet Cherry, and Black Dahlia. Order placed! Thanks for the photos!
Sylirael says
What’s new, Pussycat? 😀
No? No-one wanted to think about Tom Jones? OK, to be fair, neither did I, but that’s somehow what pops into my mind when I see the name of the GORGEOUS MAUVY PINK THAT MUST BE MINE AT SOME POINT.
*breathes heavily through nostrils as people in lab stare, bemused*
Anyway, one of the few benefits (?) of living in Middle Earth when it comes to makeup is that absolutely no price tag shocks you. $50 is chump change for a lipstick here – it won’t even get you a MAC mineralize one! ^_^ (they’re $56 each).
*laugh/sob*
Fran says
sobbing with you, I wouldn’t have much of a stash if I had to live with those prices!
Bella says
I must have some of this, but no-one wants to ship it to the Netherlands!!
Divya says
Sweet Cherry reminds me of Cherry Lush from TF! I want Platinum so bad! 🙂
Kim says
Is it possible to love and hate Tom Ford at the same time? 🙂 Everything is so gorgeous that it’s only a matter of time before I’m forced to shell out some (OK, too much) cash.
So, I watched Snowpiercer last night. I should have re-read your comments on it because I’m sure you gave some warning but, I think I’m going to have a hard time eating today. Which is great for my waistline but not so good for my nausea level. HAHA! I’m sure you know the part I mean – when he opened that cover… ugh. Overall, I thought it was really good, though. Lots of predictable moments but I felt like the end could have gone either way and that was the most important part. 🙂
Kiss & Make-up says
I have my eyes (and soon hopefully also my lips) on First Time!
B says
i love sweet cherry and first time but I hate getting attached to LE lippies 🙁 its the one makeup product I finish pretty regularly and it sucks when I can’t get a new one
Fran says
Gorgeous, gorgeous colors, but I have never spent $50 for a lipstick and have no Tom Ford counter near me to try these out! Pussycat looks like a nude I could actually wear (there are very, very few that don’t make me look like a corpse) and of course I love Black Dahlia, Plum Lush, Ruby Rush, and Sweet Cherry. I might even be able to wear Flame — orange-y reds are harder for me to wear — but, sadly, I may never know, $50 is too much to try it out!
Shannon says
oh YUM. Man… eventually I’m gonna hit up a Tom Ford counter, and that will be the day I start spending way, way, WAY too much on makeup. Sigh! Trying to put that off as long as possible, lol…
Sami says
OMG! Every single shade is absolutely perfect!
Rachel P. says
Oh girl, I am all about that Black Dahlia life… it looks perfect!! And First Time could be a contender, too. I could never afford these but I will be sure to pin them so I can at least look at the pretty pictures for a long time to come!
Ericca says
I love matte lipsticks and happy to see that everyone is jumping on the matte bandwagon. I am in love with Flame and Black dahalia. However for 50 bucks a pop I will stick to Mac and Occ lip tars.
Karen says
Hi Ericca,
Those are great options too. 🙂 Do you have a fave matte shade from MAC or OCC?
ericcA says
OCC’s black dahlia, MAC smoked purple is among my favorites. I also like living legends and ruby woo as well as sin.
Sorry for the late response
Estefania says
OMG…. I just ordered Platinum, but I very sternly told myself I wasn’t buying a lipstick, too, because come on. One hundred (almost) dollars on two products??? Now, I’m reconsidering… I’ve got my eye on Pussycat and First Time…
Karen says
Hi Estefania,
I had the same exact moment when I put two TF brow pencils in my cart. I swear I had an out-of-body experience, LOL!
So, not to be a makeup pusher, but Pussycat is the cat’s meow. I wore it today and was totally feeling it.
Happy (almost) Friday! What are your plans for the weekend?
Estefania says
Haha! I know that feeling! I take some comfort in knowing that Pussycat is permanent, so I can pick it up whenever… “First Time,” however, might be the first time I spend $50 on a lipstick!
I don’t really have weekend plans! I got Friday off work, so I can chill out. You?
Tatiana says
The eye cream in Spice looks beautiful on you. I ordered both cream eye shadows, but the Spice gave me serious rabbit eyes. Not a good look for my very pale skin. Still waiting for my Pussycat lipstick to be delivered. I need to drive to The City to try Flame, Ruby Rush and Velvet Cherry in person. I seriously love the look and feel of Tom Ford lipsticks.
Karen says
Hi Tatiana,
What liner did you use with Spice?
Tatiana says
Ooh, I didn’t. I put Spice on, took one look in the mirror and realized it was too reddish for me to pull off and removed it immediately. I didn’t even finish the look. I went right for the Platinum and then used UD Hustle to line. Got several compliments on that look. I wish Tom Ford would release more colors in the cream shadow line.
Karen says
I think you can totally make Spice work. Try wearing a black liner on the water lines. It should help separate the red tones Spice from the whites of the eyes.
Korena says
I just recently came across your blog and must admit I am in love. I am especially in awe with this post about the Tom Ford collection. I’m a huge lipstick girl and am always looking for new colors to try. Defiantly going to get my hands on that black dahlia and sweet cherry in the near future! You rock!
Karen says
Hi Korena,
It’s very nice to meet you! Thank you for visiting and leaving a comment. Are you a Tom Ford fan? I hope you have Tom Ford’s Sable Smoke Lipstick; it’s my favorite! 🙂
Erin says
HOLY CRAP! Those are beautiful!
Lisa C says
I love that movie!! It’s my favorite comedy of all time, so many greats are in it as well. Mad mad mad mad world, great movie!
I’m also loving Pink Tease, such a pretty shade of pink!
Sarah says
Agghhhh just when I thought I was DONE with Tom Ford. Now I have to have Black Dhalia and the eye shadow in platinum. And you have me curious about his eye liner and brow pencils now too. 35th birthday present to myself? (I think I’ve said that 3 times now about 3 different things I likely really shouldn’t be buying…) I’m a sucker for a good pink nude too. First time looks really nice but maybe too pale for me
Sarah says
PS I have viper and Bordeaux lust and I agree that Viper rocks. What top-coat do you use to get such shine?
PPS I’ve decided that I’m for sure getting black Dhalia and can live without the pinky nudes. I have lots of amazing pinky nudes from Nars and BB 😉
pim says
i’m about nc30 in mac and i’m kinda looking for “my lips but better ” which one do you think i should go for
ps. Love your blog thank you karen
