5 Road Trip Essentials
- A GPS — So I can navigate. Because I’m not about to twiddle my thumbs while El Hub drives around aimlessly and refuses to ask for directions. Nope. NOT GONNA DO IT.
- All the tunes — Don’t forget your Prince and Fleetwood Mac compilations, because both are necessary for trips lasting more than two hours.
- Snacks — Obvs.
- Comfy stretchy pants — Self-explanatory.
- Lipsticks — Always! And if they’re Chanel Rouge Coco Lipsticks, even better. 🙂
The Chanel Travel Diary Fall Collection has two marvelously moisturizing Chanel Rouge Coco Lipsticks in it ($37 each), and yes, I did a whoop-whoop car chair dance of joy when I saw bright red poppy Experimental on my lips for the first time.
Experimental = effortlessly elegant
I mean, how can you not get excited about something this creamy and bright, yet effortlessly easy and elegant? The Rouge Cocos have my favorite ChanelChanel lipstick formula, and my favorite Rouge Coco colors are the brights.
Like Dimitri, my go-to red, one layer of Experimental leaves behind a veil of rich color. The coverage straddles the line between medium and full, and I don’t have to deal with extra application chores to sharpen the edges, like lip liner or using a concealer brush loaded with concealer.
Experimental doesn’t look heavy, either, or forced, like you’re trying too hard to be schmexy. I dunno if it’s just me, but I think there’s something very “chic French Girl” about it. All I need now is a bike with a basket and a baguette. 🙂
If you’re a fan of the lightweight Guerlain KissKiss lipsticks, I think you’ll love this color (and the Rouge Cocos in general).
Daylight = a warm peachy nude
Daylight is the other Rouge Coco in the collection, and I’m a little less crazy about it. It’s a warm peachy nude, and yes, it’s rockin’ the same signature lighter-than-air Rouge Coco formula that Experimental has, so it feels and looks great…but it immediately settles into my horizontal lip lines, man! So I have to pat it down and baby it, and THEN apply another layer and pat that down…
For a nude, it’s more work than I want to invest on any given Tuesday (or Thursday, for that matter). I’d rather something I can set and forget, which is what I can do with my current go-to nudes, Peacemaker and Believer, from the Hourglass Lip Stylo line (they’re awesome!).
Explore Experimental, but drive by Daylight…
It’s all about that poppy red. Experimental is where it’s at.
Sorry Not Sorry
I’ve been running more on the treadmill lately! — mostly because I’m finally able to finally tolerate it again. I used to love the treadmill until I had Connor. Then I couldn’t stand to be on it. Felt too lonely and solitary… But now I sorta enjoy it again. It even gives me a reason to look for new music (I watch music videos on YouTube while I’m running).
I’ve been putting in the miles to this Demi Lovato song: Sorry Not Sorry. It’s a fun one to crank up and run sprints.
I also found a choreography video to it by one of my fave choreographers, Jojo Gomez. Her dance style… Damn, I wish I could work it. It’s sexy and sassy and high-energy, and there’s lots o’ booty shakin’.
Maybe if you gave me three years, I could eventually learn the routine, haha! Maybe…
Love it.
Oh, and get a load of her pink tennies in the video. 🙂 I want a pair just like them.

Hi Karen, non-makeup related but I’m loving this cardigan? that you have on. Details please!
Karen says
Hi Katrina,
It’s by Mossimo and it’s from Target. My mom gave it to me as a gift last Christmas. 🙂 It has pretty cabling and it’s very soft and warm!

That red looks great on you!

Experimental sure was made for you!

Uh, Experimental is really such a pretty color. I use time on the treadmill to catch up on shows. The well toned actors give me extra motivation.

I like Experimental!

We’re doing a short road trip up to my parents’house tomorrow! Three hour drive, so not too bad. Hettie is coming with us and will get to meet her Aunt Tinkerbell (my mom’s Rottweiler) and Uncle Hoho the kitty. It should be good! We’re taking Zack’s new car which means I don’t have to drive since it’s a stick shift.
Love experimental on you!

That’s too bad about Daylight because it really does look great on you. Of course, so does Experimental. And every other lip color known to man. HAHA!

Hi Karen,
the eye-combo looks great on you. Is the eyeshadow also from the new Fall collection?

I have been enjoying your blog forever but this is my first time reaching out. I just bought Experimental last night on a total whim. It looks fabulous on you but I’m afraid it’s too bright for me. I’m a fair red head. Do you think a fair gal can pull this off?! Thanks so much!
Karen says
Hi Megan,
I think you can TOTALLY do it. Do you often wear bright colors? Because sometimes, when I’m trying a new shade that I’m not used to seeing myself in, it takes a while to get used to the visual. You could start with a baby step… Maybe wear it as a light stain first by dabbing it lightly onto your lips for the sheerest amount of color? Then, once you get used to seeing yourself with a bold lip color, slowly amp up the intensity.
