I don’t think I’ll ever leave California. I’ve lived here most of my life, and I can’t imagine living anyplace else, but if I ever do move, I’ll never forget the golden brown hills here in NorCal.
You can really it in parts of the state with a lot of open space, like Blackie’s Pasture in Tiburon, where the hills and the pasture are covered by a carpet of golden brown from late spring till fall.
Chanel perfectly captured that California golden brown in $36 Memory, their new Ombre Premier Cream Eyeshadow from the Chanel Travel Diary Fall Collection.
The shadow, like the rest of the pieces in the collection, was inspired by a road trip that Chanel Global Makeup and Colour Designer Luca Pica took across California with her friends.
The Ombre Premier cream shadows are Chanel’s line of potted cream shadows, and if you haven’t tried them yet, you gotta get on that ASAP.
The Ombre Premiers are soft and have a bit of bounce to them, so they feel like spongy velvet and have a different texture than dense potted creams like the MAC Paint Pots.
That soft creaminess cranks up their blend-a-bility, so even if you don’t know a tapered brush from a domed brush, no problem. You can just use your fingers.
The pink ladies are baaaack!
I spotted them while I was driving home from the gym the other day. The pink ladies are pink lilies that pop up around the North Bay every mid-summer and early fall.
Gosh, aren’t they pretty? Even though they’re a reminder that summer is moving along, I always look forward to seeing them. And they’re *everywhere*. Some people plant them in their gardens, which is where I took these pics. They were in my neighbor’s flowers, and yes, I was creepin’ in their yard…but you mostly see them on the side of the road, even along the freeway.
You’ll just be driving along and see these gangs of pink flowers dotting the side of the road!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Stunning!! I am in LOVE with that color! And, I’m so jealous that you live in CA. I lived there for about 6 weeks, and I didn’t want to come home! It’s so beautiful! I lived about an hour outside of San Diego – Carlsbad. I need lessons from you on taking selfies!! lol
Karen says
Hi Mary Ann,
I’ve spent a lot of time in the San Diego region (I learned to surf there) and love that area so much! When you lived there did you spend any time in La Jolla? That’s my favorite part.
Mary Ann Sromoski says
Oh yes! La Jolla is absolutely gorgeous! I’m dying to come back to visit. My relatives moved to the Napa Valley area, so I’d love to see that as well!
Chelsea says
That’s a beautiful color! I love bronzey shades for my eyes. Any weird scents?
Karen says
OK, I just stuck my nose in the jar and now the tip of it is bronze, LOL! I didn’t pick up any scents, so I think you’re good. 🙂
Chelsea says
LMAO! I appreciate your dedication to research!
Karen says
I totally get it about Chanel though. They looooove putting scents in everything!

Karen, that shade is pretty on your eyes. It looks a bit more intense than Undertone, and we know how much I love that shade. Does the retractable brush work well with thencream shadow? I have been thinking aout investing in one of them, but wasn’t sure it was worth the splurge. I may just need to hold off until my birthday. Are they a permanent piece? I can’t wait to hear your review of the palette essential. It looks beautiful on you.
Anyway, I need to fold some of Zack’s laundry. Hope to hear from you soon.
Karen says
Hi Jane,
You’re right, it’s much more intense compared to Undertone, and on you would probably read more as a deeper bronzy gold. I love the retractable brush! It works great and the brush fibers are so soft. I use the flat side to apply the cream shadow onto my lids, then I buff out the edges with the tapered side. I have a few Chanel brushes (mostly things I’ve gotten as travel-size items in kits), and they’re all lovely. They actually just released a new line of brushes and they’re so tempted, AGGH! I’m pretty sure the dual ended brushes are permanent, but you might want to check in with your friend at the counter to be sure. 🙂
How was Zack’s time at the beach? I bet he had fun!

You’re so lucky to be a lifelong California resident. I lived there from the age of 5 to almost 10, when economic circumstances forced my family to move back to Texas. I’ve never stopped missing California. I hope I can live there again. I have lymphoma, so I don’t know how much time I have left to make that a reality.
Thanks for the flower pictures. Absolutely nothing in Texas is that showy at this time of year.
Karen says
Hi CL,
I hope you can make it back here soon and will keep my fingers crossed for you.
There’s always cool stuff blooming around here. Next time something catches my eye I’ll whip out my camera so you can enjoy the flowers here too. 🙂

A beautiful shade, and one I would reach for a lot. And if it brings back memories of your home, that is an added bonus. I moved back to the place of my upbringing last year too, and it feels good to reexperience things you knew and loved as a kid.
cherie says
Beautiful shade. Does it come close to any of Chanel’s other cream shadows? This is one I’d wear all the time. Also, I love Northern California. I’m hoping to make it out there for my 40th this fall.
Karen says
Hi Cherie,
Chanel Mirage Illusion D’Ombre is similar, but it’s shinier and you need to do a few layers to amp up the intensity of pigment. The formula is different, too. I prefer the Ombre Premiers because they’re easier to blend. HTH, and let me know if you have any other questions.
Kim says
I have a faint Memory of how much thicker my wallet was before Chanel! 😉 Seriously, though, that’s a lovely shade. I feel like the whole collection will be gorgeous. I’m trying not to look at the lip colors. HAHA!
Those pink ladies are beautiful. And how lovely that they are growing wild!
Karen says
Chanel is one of my faves too! I always love how they handle color. My only wish is that they did more variety of skin tone shades for their foundations since they tend to lean very beige. But their season stuff and their color products are so great! Did you ever try their Stylo Yeux Waterproof Liner? I’ve got it on my mind today because I just ran out and am about to place an order on the website.
Kim says
No, thankfully I have not been near a Chanel counter but it’s definitely on my list! My Malice is only about 1/4 used but I’m already starting to stress that I may run out and they’ll discontinue it. HAHA!
Chris25 says
Pink lilies! I didn’t even know such a thing existed.

Long time lurker, first time commenter! Do you think Memory is similar to Tom Ford’s cream shadow in Spice? I think your minimal makeup thing is going great! I’ve been following the same kind of approach lately. I know you reviewed some Glossier stuff but the Generation G lipsticks sound like they’re up your alley 🙂
Georgia says
Ohh! That Chanel eye shadow looks like I may need it!
Be careful with the Pink Ladies – they may be pretty, but they are deadly to cats. Look but don’t touch and do not bring them in the house!
Eleni says
Checked out the whole collection today and loved this shade! The blue one isn’t bad either, maybe as a liner more for me, and the two would combine so well! I ended up with the quad though, can’t wait to play this weekend!
Tatiana says
Memory looks like it’s the kind of shade I’d love. Tempted to order it sight unseen. I really like the new ombre premier cream shadows. Wearing Undertone today.
I used to call those flowers naked ladies because they just come up as a stem and a flower and no leaves. Lol.

Karen I bougth a couple of creamy eye shadow when Chanel released them a few years ago, I was very dissapointed because the dried Out in just a couple of months.?

Karen, around here we call those Naked Lady Lilies- the foliage comes up in the spring, then dies back. Late summer up pop the “naked” lilies!
