In partnering with Ulta Beauty, I’ve received product samples and/or compensation for my time and effort in creating this post. All thoughts and opinions are my own. #sponsored @ultabeauty

My thirtieth birthday heralded some pretty big life changes. Like, I met my kitty soulmate (hey, that’s a huge deal, OK?), took the plunge to pursue my lifelong dream of freelance writing (this was shortly before I started the blog), and I finally got hitched to El Hub (we’d been dating a while).

Big things also started happening in my beauty-related life. For instance, my skin underwent some crazy-@ss changes. After years of oily skin, my epidermis turned combination oily-dry, and then there was that awful period of hormonal acne along my jawline and chin.

Oh, and my hair didn’t make it through unscathed. Two words: the grays.

They’d been around since I was a teenager — a few occasional gray hairs tucked away, usually on the back of my head (everyone in my family goes gray early) — but around the time I turned 30, all hell broke loose. I started seeing gray hairs where I’d never seen them before, like around my bangs and on the top of my head. Suddenly, going to the salon for a touch of color stopped being something I did just for fun when I got restless or felt like a change. It became part of regular maintenance, like going to the dentist.

And that’s not all. I also started noticing changes in the texture of my hair. “What are these random wiry Chinese noodle-like strands coming out of my head?”

Oh, that’s my hurr!

Turns out I wasn’t alone in this. Many women (and dudes) experience changes in their hair around the age of 30. It’s something that the products in Living Proof’s new Timeless collection are designed to address. They’re made to help hair cope with the age-related changes that often happen to your hair in your 30s and up, protecting it from breakage, while keeping hair looking voluminous, shiny, smooth and rich in color.

The new four-piece Living Proof Timeless line is available now exclusively at Ulta Beauty and includes the Timeless Pre-Shampoo Treatment ($26), Timeless Shampoo ($28), Timeless Conditioner ($28) and Timeless Plumping Mousse ($28).

All of them are sulfate-free, silicone-free and color safe, and they also contain UV protectors to extend the life of your hair color and protect your hair against damage from heat styling and the sun.

They’re all designed to work together as part of the system…but, of course, you can cherry pick and just use your faves. I’ve been using the whole kit and caboodle for maximum effect, and it’s been about about two weeks. So far, my long, color-treated hair is feelin’ it.

My favorite member of the Timeless fam has to be the Pre-Shampoo Treatment. I was a little wary of it at first because I’d never used a pre-shampoo treatment before and didn’t know what to expect. Mostly, I thought it would be an unnecessary step, but yeah, now that I’ve used this one, I see the point.

living proof pre shampoo

Living Proof Pre-Shampoo

Have you ever used a pre-shampoo before? Basically, they’re moisturizing treatments, like hair masks, oils and butters, that you apply to your hair while it’s wet or dry before you hop into the bath or shower to shampoo and/or condition. The extra step adds shine, and it’s also supposed to make the Timeless shampoo and conditioner work better.

I apply it to my hair while it’s dry, from the roots to the ends, and let it sit and absorb for five minutes (or longer, if I want). Then I follow that up with the Timeless Shampoo and Conditioner.

I definitely notice my hair feeling softer and smoother when I use the Pre-Shampoo. It’s easier to run my fingers through my hair without running into knots, so I think it’s also reducing breakage.

And my hair color friggin’ loves the Timeless Shampoo and Conditioner.

living proof timeless shampoo conditioner

Living Proof Timeless Shampoo and Conditioner

I recently got my color re-done (ah…fresh, dark chocolatey brown roots!), and ya know how it is when you first get your hair colored? — how after that first shampoo and conditioning at home, most of the color ends up going down the drain after you rinse?

Very little of that happens when I use Timeless Shampoo and Conditioner. I also totally appreciate that the products contain heat protection and UV filters, too, because I got a stern lecture from my stylist not long ago about incorporating products into my routine that do those both of those things.

And then there’s the Timeless Plumping Mousse

living proof timeless mousse

Living Proof Timeless Plumping Mousse

It specializes in hair density, which, I just learned from the Interwebz, is the number of hairs you have within a square inch of your scalp. As we age, the number of hairs per square inch usually declines, so to make up for that loss, the Plumping Mousse volumizes the hairs you currently have.

First time I used it, it was “Helloooooo, lovely lift!” The difference was immediately noticeable. I got more volume in places where I don’t usually have much, like around my roots and the mid-shaft of my hair.

I use the Plumping Mousse on wet hair, right after I get out of the shower and towel dry. I apply it from the roots to the ends, concentrating most of the product on my roots and the mid-shaft, and then I blow dry my hair until it’s about halfway dry, before letting it air dry the rest of the way. Then I use a large-barrel curling iron to curl the ends.

And that’s that.

Yup, my hair and I are digging this collection!

If you’re interested, you can find the Living Proof Timeless line now exclusively at Ulta Beauty.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. I actually prepped this post the week before Connor Claire’s arrival, so right now? Yeah…my hair does not look like this right now, haha. Right now it’s…to put it mildly, not this good.

It’s a good thing my immediate supervisor is a cat because most human beings would wonder why I’m sitting here at my desk sniffing my arms and hands…

It looks pretty weird, especially when my eyes roll back in my head. I’m glad I don’t have to explain myself to a disinterested 20-pound tabby. :)

But if I were to do it anyway, I’d tell him, “Hey, man! I’m wearing Soap & Glory Righteous Butter body cream, and it smells divine!” — just like one of my favorite fall/winter scents, Chanel Coco Mademoiselle (although some gals feel that it smells more like the now-discontinued Dior Miss Cherie).

soap glory righteous butter

Soap & Glory Righteous Butter

I LOVE this brand, and not only because their products smell amazing (although that’s a big plus) and their pink packaging is way cute (also helps too!), but also because of the size of the line.

They have a full range of face and bath stuff, and everything I’ve tried works great for my dry skin. I really like their Righteous Butter body cream, their exfoliator, their hand cream (which is on my desk right meow) and their foot cream. My skin is considerably less alligator-like when I regularly use them.

soap glory flake away

Soap & Glory Flake Away

I began to panic a little starting a few months ago when I noticed a dwindling amount of Soap & Glory stuff being carried at Sephora, and then one day, it was all gone! Panic much!? Maybe a little…

But as it turns out, my panic was for naught because — yay! — Soap & Glory is now available at Ulta!

Homie, seriously, if spend any more time at Ulta, they’re going to have to set up a rollaway bed and a feeding station for Tabs, and I’ll be going even more often now that I know I can get Soap & Glory.

Remember when the brand lowered their prices a few months back but kept the same sizes? (Really, who does that??) I thought that was very cool.

Next time you’re shopping at Ulta for yourself (or enabling others), check out a few of my Soap & Glory favorites, especially if you like the scent of Chanel Coco Mademoiselle and/or have impossibly dry skin…

You can also find Soap & Glory on Ulta’s website, and right now they’re offering a free gift with any $25 Soap & Glory purchase. You’ll get a travel-sized jar of The Righteous Butter (offer good Sept. 11 through Sept. 19, or while supplies last).

Purple glitter and macarons

purple-glitter-notebook

Cute notebooks and steno get me every single time. This month I fed my steno habit/addiction with this glittery purple spiral notebook from Staples and these adorable macaron sticky notes from Papyrus.

They’re both on my desk right now (next to the cat lady weekly planner I found at Barnes & Noble), encouraging me with their cuteness. :)

Now I need a purple gel pen to match the notebook! I got the idea from my OB/GYN, who always uses purple gel pens to write stuff down, and I get a little steno envy every time I see it. LOL!

baby girl saying hi auntie

“Hi, Auntie! I love you!”

I had a quick checkup yesterday, by the way, and got another glimpse of Baby Girl.

She’s getting so big! I got to see her umbilical cord on the ultrasound for the first time and heard her heartbeat.

She says, “Hi, Auntie! Have a nice day today.” :)

GURL, you don’t even know. My usual plan of attack when I go to Ulta (or Sephora, or Target, or CVS, or any other place where I can physically pick up makeup and drop it into a basket or cart) goes like this: if I can’t carry it to the register with my own two hands, it’s not leaving the store with me.

This usually prevents the urge to keep throwing stuff (and by “stuff,” I mean everything and the kitchen sink) into my basket.

Usually.

It didn’t work the last time I went to Ulta.

(Long story…)

Here are the products I picked up and which ones I’m loving (and not loving) from that visit.

Products mentioned…

As always, thank you again for watching!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Have you been to Ulta lately? What should I grab on my next trip?

Ulta Adventures!

Because, obviously, the most logical thing to do with that new Real Techniques Contour Brush you just picked up on sale on Ulta is use it to pretend you’re contouring your cat’s cheekbones.

Obviously!

Yeah, um, my brush stash is looking a little more robust these days — robust like my tabby! — because I went to Ulta last weekend and the Real Techniques brushes and brush kits were on sale.

They still are, too (buy one get the second one 50% off), and you know me and the word, “sale.”

I’m definitely my mother’s daughter. :)

Tabs contouring with his new Real Techniques Contour Brush

Tabby makeup artist…

I’ve been wanting to try these forever because Ive heard so many good things about them. Plus, not gonna lie, I’m kind of a Sam and Nic fangirl.

I grabbed a couple of face and eye brushes, and I’m very excited about using them. I’ve been wanting to step up my drugstore makeup game.

Real Techniques Brushes

The Real Techniques Brushes…

While I love the fancy-schmancy stuff, as in high-end/department store makeup, there’s also a lot to love at the drugstore, and I’m hoping these brushes live up to the hype.

Real Techniques Brushes

The Real Techniques Brushes…

Speaking of bodacious bargains that perform well, I may already be in lust with one of the foundations I snagged, L’Oreal’s True Match Lumi.

My friend Miss Marisol recommended it, and even went so far as to say that she keeps backups of her backups.

Yes, it’s THAT serious.

So of course I had to try it.

Loreal True Match Lumi

Loreal True Match Lumi foundation in Sand Beige and Sun Beige ($12.99 each)

I grabbed two shades, Sand Beige and Sun Beige, because, honestly, it is so difficult to figure out which shade to get in a store when there are no testers.

I’m always tempted to open the bottles and swatch them on myself right there…but then I’m afraid that somebody’s going to notice and be all, “GROSS! Oh, my gosh, Becky! That girl just opened that bottle of foundation over there!”

I don’t want to be that person (although I am ALWAYS tempted).

So I ended up getting the two closest shades, and after trying them at home, apparently, I am not Sand Beige.

Sand Beige must have been secret code for, “There is a lot of pink in this foundation.” FYI.

So Sun Beige it is! — and Sand Beige is going back to Ulta.

I’ve been wearing and testing it for the past couple days, and I’m liking it so far. It sits on the skin beautifully, doesn’t settle into my pores or fine lines, and looks fairly natural.

I have yet to see how it looks in pics, but so far, so good.

I also grabbed a few other face products to try. Last week I asked the Twitter-verse for drugstore makeup recs, and a lot of peeps raved about the Maybelline Fit Me line, notably their Fit Me Concealer.

Maybelline Fit Me Concealer

Maybelline Fit Me Concealer ($6.99)

I remember trying the Fit Me line a long time ago when it first came out, and to be honest, I wasn’t wowed, but that was a while ago, so I thought I’d give it another try.

Well, Fit Me Concealer? I can see why people like it. It totally reminds me of Diorskin Nude Skin Perfection Hydrating Concealer by Dior ($34). Like Diorskin, it’s easy to blend and doesn’t look heavy or fake, not even on the dry areas of my skin or around my fine lines.

The only thing is…I’m afraid it might not be opaque enough for my under-eye sitch. I’ve only used it once, so I haven’t really tried to make it work, but as of now, the jury’s still out.

Maybelline Fit Me Foundation and Powder in shade 240

Maybelline Fit Me Foundation ($7.99) and Powder in shade 240 ($7.99)

The Fit Me Foundation and Fit Me Powder I also grabbed (in shade 240, which is new) look like they might be a little too dark for me. I haven’t tried them on yet, so we’ll see.

I swear, sometimes it’s really hard to gauge shades accurately under those fluorescent store lights…

I also stocked up on some things I just generally needed (haha, “needed”), like this CND Solar Oil.

CND Solar Oil

CND Solar Oil ($7.50)

I got a bottle for me and a bottle for my mom because, honestly, she’s so funny… OK, we both suffer from RCS (otherwise known as Raggedy Cuticle Syndrome), and so for Mother’s Day last year, I got her a Dior cuticle cream, thinking, ya know, that it would be something she’d never buy for herself.

So I called her before going to Ulta and asked if she needed anything. Since I had cuticle oil on my list of things to get for myself, I mentioned it to her and asked if she’d ever used the Dior cuticle cream I got her as a gift. She was like, “No, I just put it on a shelf for decoration. It’s so pretty! I just want to look at it.”

I was like, “MOM! It’s not just for display. I wanted you to use it… OK, I will get you a different cuticle oil from Ulta that you can actually use.”

LOL! Moms are so funny sometimes.

Last, but not least, I also grabbed a couple boxes of my favorite Eylure lashes. :)

Eylure No. 117

The Eylure No. 117s

Eylure No. 154

The Eylure No. 154

So, uh…I’ve been stuck in front (and behind) a video camera, which I am this close to throwing across the room, for two days.

See, I tried to record a new kind of video tutorial, thinking, “Oh, this is gonna be easy. It’s only gonna take a few hours.”

Famous last words…

Next thing you know, it’s two days later, I’m ready to rip my hair out, and the video isn’t even done.

So that’s where I’ve been.

Everything’s fine. I just get absorbed in projects sometimes and have a hard time finding my way out.

What’s going on with you?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Ulta

Oh, hello! Fancy meeting you here!

Wandering around a store like Ulta is like chicken soup for my soul. :)

I hope you’ve been having a good week, but I gotta be honest — this hasn’t been one of my all-time best. Nothing big. Just the rainy weather, I think.

Buuut, today the sun came out, so I pulled myself together, did what I had to do, and stopped by Sephora and Ulta to get some vitamin W (for W-indow shopping).

I saw a bunch of cute stuff at Ulta (the one on Francisco Blvd. in San Rafael), like these things from NYX, Pixel and Physicians Formula…

Pixel Color Cosmetics

Pixel Color Cosmetics (pieces are $2.49-$5.99 each)

Pixel Double Pan Eye Duos

$5.99 Pixel Double Pan Eye Duos

And then there’s this brand called Natural Life. They make purses and other accessories with spunky, inspiring sayings and bright colors and cute prints.

Natural Life Is Easier Zipper Pouch

The $16.99 Natural Life Is Easier Zipper Pouch

Of course, I couldn’t leave empty-handed…

Well, I mean, I didn’t want to leave empty-handed. :)

Little bitty Ulta haul

Little bitty Ulta haul

I walked out with a couple of random things — a Hello Kitty Cosmetics Headband by Earth Therapeutics (I’ve been needing a headband for when I wash my face at night) and a bright pink, orange and turquoise Boho Bandeau by Natural Life.

I’m pretty fired up about the Boho Bandeau!

Love the colors. Gotta give it a try with a hot pink matte lip, or maybe some turquoise eyeliner along the lower lash line…

The packaging has a bunch of pictures of different ways you can wear it.

That’s cool…but ya know, I’ll probably just use it as a headband, LOL!

Have you been getting your vitamin W lately? It’s important, you know. :) Let me know if you’ve found anything cute.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
