There’s something so comforting about hugging mom and getting a good whiff of her scent.

Why is that? Maybe it’s some primal leftover from childhood that never quite leaves you? Hmm, deep thoughts…

Mother’s Day is this weekend! If you’re looking for a gift, here are a few of my favorite mom-friendly scents.

For the sophisticated mom — Gucci Bamboo

Gucci Bamboo is like a perfect pair of nude pumps or a tan trench that goes with everything. For moms with a classic style.

Official notes: Italian bergamot, Casablanca lily, ylang ylang and Comoros sandalwood.

Unofficial notes: A great day at a job you love, cocktails with good friends after a long week, and looking at yourself in the mirror and totally feelin’ your current outfit.

$92 for a 1.6-oz. bottle, available now at Sephora.

For the fun-lovin’ mom — Tom Ford Neroli Portofino Acqua

This playful perfume smells like summers on the beach. If your mom’s a water baby, I bet she’ll love it.

Official notes: Citrus and amber

Unofficial notes: Sand between your toes, saltwater on your skin and endless summer days that lead to sultry summer nights…

$150 for a 1.7-oz. bottle, available at Sephora.

For the no-nosense mom — Reserve Velvet Flora, by Clean

For moms who like their scents on the not-so-sweet side, Reserve Velvet Flora could almost pass for a men’s cologne.

Official notes: Green bergamot, jasmine lily, saffron flower, cedarwood, moss, musk, amber and patchouli.

Unofficial notes: Old books, Sunday brunch on a crisp spring morning, and standing next to your current boy crush and catching a whiff of his cologne.

$90 for a 3.4-oz. bottle, available at Sephora.

For the flirty mom — Lipstick On, by Maison Martin Margiela

A girly-girl scent for moms who never leave home without a tube of red lipstick.

Official notes: Bergamot oil, heliotrope accord, neroli oil, orange flower absolute, orris concrete, galbanum oil, tonka bean absolute, vanilla bourbon extract and patchouli oil.

Unofficial notes: Matte red lips, black cat eyeliner and a single strand of pearls. *meow*

$125 for a 3.4-oz. bottle, available at Sephora.

For the easygoing mom — Tocca Emelia

I think this is a scent for almost anyone of any age. You’ll be tempted to “borrow” this fresh, easygoing scent from mom to wear it for yourself.

Official notes: Watery clementine, loquat fruit, bucchu leaves, fig leaf, geranium coeur, magnolia tree leaf, amaryllis, Kadota fig, maté absolute Paraguay, bison gross, florentine orris, praline, ambrette seed absolute and coconut water.

Unofficial notes: Chatting on the phone with your best friend and laughing at all of your inside jokes, long walks in the afternoon on a sunny spring day, and your favorite maxi dress.

$68 for a 1.7-oz. bottle, available now at Sephora.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Happy Tuesday, friend. :)

Tom Ford Eye Color Quad in Honeymoon ($80)

Competely proven, statistically verifiable facts (well…) about the new spring Tom Ford Eye Color Quad in Honeymoon

  1. It costs $1 BILLION!

OK…it’s more like $80, but it feels like a billion dollars because we’re only talking about four eyeshadows.

  2. Studies show that upon applying any of these four luminous shades, nine out of 10 people exhibit the following symptoms: their eyes roll back in their head, they bite down on their fist and scream, “OHHHH!” in sheer ecstasy. The tenth person just face plants directly on the ground from a standing position.
  3. You could probably live without it (LIES!!!).

I mean, seriously, there are so many things (price notwidthstanding) about this quad that make me want to do the snake in my chair. In terms of texture, finish and wear time, it knocks it outta the park.

Swatches of the Tom Ford Eye Quad in Honeymoon (for reference, as you may or may not already know, I’m a MAC NC42)

It’s as if Tom probed my mind like a creepy makeup alien from The X-Files (have you been watching the new ones?) and molded all of my lusty eyeshadow dreams into these pans. When I load my brush with these shadows and apply them to my lids, the pigmented powders glide, blend and buff like they were put on this planet solely to make my makeup life easier.

A few days ago, I got it into my head to use the palette, and it was a day when I didn’t have a lot of time to get ready. No joke — I had my eye makeup all blended and done in less than five minutes, and even though I blazed through everything, I didn’t have to clean up anything under my eyes.

Wearing Tom Ford Honeymoon on my lids and lash lines…

Also, please, please don’t outright dismiss this quad if your only reservation is that you’re a tried-and-true lover of matte finish eyeshadows. These shadows may look like they’d be super shiny and frosty and difficult for anyone over the age of 15 to wear, but their luminous finish is surprisingly forgiving.

They create a good amount of glow (though still subtle), but they don’t bring the bad drama, like uninvited fine lines, that often accompany shiny shadows to the party. I usually like to keep the shiny stuff out of my crease for that reason, but I can “go there” with these shadows. Highly recommended for makeup lovers of all ages.

Tom Ford Eye Quad in Honeymoon ($80)

It would be a travesty if the colors in this quad disappeared on the skin after a short time. Thankfully, they don’t. I can wear any combo of these four shades atop my trusty NARS Pro-Prime Smudge-Proof, and I’m good for at least 10 hours.

Granted…these days, I’m laid out on the couch for much of that time, since Baby Girl’s main mission in life has been to zap the living energy out of me, but still…long wear time FTW! :)

Please, somebody, anybody, take this quad with you on your honeymoon, because if you won’t do it, then I’m going to have to insist that El Hub finally take me on ours (we never officially had one), which means that I’ll be forced to visit someplace with warm and tropical beaches and sit in a lounge chair with a virgin margarita while my lids glisten in the sun while wearing these shadows…

DARN.

Honeymoon is part of Tom Ford’s permanent collection, and it appears to be a little tough to track down online right now (Neimans has it backordered until August, holy sh*t!), so you might try calling your TF local counter before heading over there, just in case.

Karen

So, the Tom Ford Holiday 2015 Noir color collection. I mean, really, it’s not like I was going to do a freaking cut crease with these products. The collection has smoky eyes written all over it!

And when I realized that, of course I had to do a little wiggle dance in my chair, because nine times out of 10, I’ll pick smoky eyes over just about anything else, so thank you, Tom, for helping me indulge my natural smoky eye makeup tendencies. Sending you matte lipstick kisses from across the Interwebs. :)

Cream and Powder Eye Color in Night Sky ($66)

Cream and Powder Eye Color in Night Sky ($66)

Five of the seven pieces in the limited edition release, which is available now online and at Tom Ford counters, are eye products. The other two include a black nail polish and a re-promoted matte pinkish nude lipstick from the permanent line, and for extra fancy effect, all of them even have special limited edition packaging (see how the caps are black instead of the regular dark brown?).

Eye Defining Pencil in Navy Black ($40)

Eye Defining Pencil in Navy Black ($40)

Now, you’ve probably already been to this rodeo before, and you know the drill, but since this is Tom Ford we’re talking about, the prices are crazy. Like, the most affordable thing in the collection is a $35 bottle of nail polish.

Let’s just let that percolate for a moment…

I know! But what can you do, right!? Unfortunately, and I mean this with all sincerity, when Tom does something well, he does it REALLY WELL. I even had an out-of-body experience once related to Tom Ford’s brow pencils (I’m so not joking either).

Lash Tips Mascara in Burnished Gold ($44)

Lash Tips Mascara in Burnished Gold ($44)

I’ve been drooling over, mumbling about and caressing five of the seven pieces in the release, and as I look at them, the word that keeps coming to my mind is “pigment.”

The Cream and Powder Eye Color in Night Sky ($66), Eye Defining Pencil in Navy Black ($40), Nail Lacquer in Blackout ($35) and, heck, even the golden glittery Lash Tips Mascara in Burnished Gold ($44) are all ridiculously intense, and I think it makes it a little easier to swallow the idea of a $40 liner or a $35 nail polish. “But I get all that color and sparkle in just one coat!?”

I’m just saying… It makes the prices sound a little more rational.

tom ford blackout

Nail Lacquer in Blackout ($35)

And in one product’s case, the Night Sky duo, I think it’s almost TOO pigmented. It actually complicates doing a traditional smoky eye and getting a good transition from dark to light.

Buuut, that’s usually not a bad problem to have when it comes to smoky eyes. Something tells me that with pricey products like these, most gals would rather have more pigment than less.

Wearing the Cream and Powder Eye Color in Night Sky, Eye Defining Pencil in Navy Black and Lash Tips Mascara in Burnished Gold on my eyes and Matte Lipstick in First Time on my lips

I go into much more detail in the video at the top, but here are some quick tidbits about the products…

  • Cream and Powder Eye Color in Night Sky ($66): CRAZY PIGMENTED! That makes this one great for smoky eyes, but also sometimes challenging, when you’re trying to create smooth gradients but don’t want to use two or three separate transition shades.
  • Eye Defining Pencil in Navy Black ($40): Hello! This one’s all that and a bag of baked Cheetos.
  • Lash Tips Mascara in Burnished Gold ($44): A total eureka moment. There’s gold glitter in them thar hills! We’re talking glitter and gold in massive amounts. When I wear this, I feel like I look a little crazy (at least, crazier than usual).
  • Nail Lacquer in Blackout ($35): You can really see the micro glitter when you get this into sunlight (it’s awesome). One coat is more than enough.
  • First Time Matte Lipstick ($55): A re-promoted from the permanent line, this one’s a marvelously pigmented matte nude pink. Just remember to prep your lips first with a balm if you have flakes, because it’s SO pigmented that it picks up every. Single. Imperfection.

I hope you see something you like. :) Let me know what you think.

Karen

Neat and New to Me

Unlike my Unsung Heroes series, which features permanent collection products I’ve known and loved a long time, the Neat and New to Me series showcases permanent collection products that slipped under my radar for a while, but then I discovered them! — and now I think they’re neat and new to me.

The answer, my friend, would be yes. A thousand times yes!

If a roving band of performance artists stopped me one day on the sidewalk in downtown Novato and asked, “Excuse us, miss [yes, they’d say ‘miss’]? Would you mind if we poured this bucket of melted Tom Ford Metallic Mink eyeliner on you to cover your entire body from head to toe like a fabulous coat of golden purply bronze?” I’d say yes, even though it would be hard to clean up, ’cause it would look fabulous.

tom ford metallic mink swatch

Tom Ford Eye Defining Pencil in Metallic Mink

All I have to say about this eyeliner is “Get outta my dreams; get into my car! — and grab me a backup while you’re at it, yo!” Metallic Mink looks SO lovely smudged along lower lash lines, especially with reddish browns or purply brown eyeshadows on your lids.

It’s a shimmery golden bronzed brown eye pencil with a slight essence of purple that comes through every once in a while, and it’s the closest thing I’ve found to BECCA’s fabled Cabrera liner. Although it’s not an exact dupe, it’s close enough to warrant a ticker-tape parade and a pair of naked baby angels playing harps. :)

Too bad this luscious stick of lusciousness is $36, but it’s from Tom, so that’s not unusual. Thankfully, at least, it does come with a pencil sharpener, if that’s any consolation.

The color kicks @ss, the formula feels silky soft, and it’s easy to smudge. Plus, it doesn’t irritate my eyes, which is nothing short of a miracle right now, because this is the time of year when EVERYTHING triggers my allergies.

To quote Jerrica from Jem and the Holograms, “Showtime, synergy!” Metallic Mink on my lower lash lines instantly makes looks more luxe. It looks expensive, but I guess it should for $36.

To find out more or to see Metallic Mink up close, head over to one of Tom Ford’s counters or tomford.com.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

P.S. Wow, Halloween is next week?? I usually have my costume all figured out by now, but I’ve been dragging my feet this year.

It’s not that I’m in bah-humbug Halloween grinch mode or anything, because I’ve been digging the Halloween decorations around my neighborhood and keeping an eye out for black cats on my walks (it’s their time to shine, after all). Plus, hello — candy.

pumpkin-and-candy-2

But I’m not fully feeling the Halloween spirit. I don’t know if it’s because I can’t figure out my costume, or if it’s because I’ve had other things on my mind (pregnancy much?), but I’m trying… I’m sure I’ll figure something out.

Have you? Are you dressing up this year?

I’m thinking about a tooth fairy, so I might check out the dollar store to look for bulk toothbrushes. Or I might dress up as Tracy Flick from Election, seeing as how Reese Witherspoon is my alleged doppleganger, LOL!

5 berry lipsticks for fall

Fall.

They say it’s fall, and it did feel like fall here about a week ago. It was cloudy and chilly, and there were leaves falling everywhere outside, but then summer struck back and said, “CUT! Hold your horses! I’m not ready to go…” We had another string of 80- and 90-degree days.

Sooner or later, though, it’ll get cooler and stay that way. It’s a guarantee. :( And when it happens, I’ll be ready for it with these five fall-friendly berry lipsticks.

1. NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Hyde Park ($26)

nars hyde park

NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Hyde Park

I really like Reddish berry Hyde Park with bronze, burgundy and brown looks. And even cranberry smoky eyes (Ooh! — give it try sometime with a warm and shimmery cranberry on your lids and a matte orangey brown in the crease). The pencil shape makes it easy to line and fill in my lips without needing a lip liner, so yay for skipping steps! Hyde Park is available now at NARS counters, stores and online.

2. Tom Ford Lip Color Matte in Plum Lush ($52)

tom ford plum lush

Tom Ford Lip Color Matte in Plum Lush

This matte plummy berry is a perennial fall fave of mine. It’s Tom Ford’s Plum Lush, and it’s a fairly flat matte that doesn’t really reflect any light. I think it looks extra fantastic when paired with contrasting eye looks that do have a little sheen, like satiny plum smoky eyes, and I also love it with deep plum winged liner. It’s available now at Tom Ford counters and online.

3. Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Jilted ($22)

urban decay jilted

Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Jilted

Jilted is my “party” berry shade because it’s so much fun! I love its slightly blue undertones and shiny finish. Just add falsies and draw crisp black cat eye flicks, and proceed to par-tay. It’s available now at Urban Decay counters and online.

4. NARS Audacious Lipstick in Fanny ($32)

nars fanny

NARS Audacious Lipstick in Fanny

Fanny, Fanny, Fo-Fanny, Banana-Fanny Fo-Fanny, Fee-Fi-Fo-Fanny, FANNY! :) NARS Fanny will take you from your cubicle to the Chevy’s down the street after work, and then back at home for a brisk evening walk with your cat (LOL!). I think of this rich berry shade as my every-occasion berry, because I can wear it everywhere (and I do!). It’s available now at NARS counters, boutiques and online.

5. MAC Satin Lipstick in Rebel ($17)

mac rebel

MAC Satin Lipstick in Rebel

Don’t you dare tell this powerful plummy berry what to do! It’s a Rebel! — and I bust it out whenever I feel like kicking @ss and taking names. I like it with bold eye looks — the bolder the better. Preferably with lashes, brows, liner and maybe even a little bit of glitter for sparkle. When you feel like going all out, reach for Rebel. It’s available now at MAC stores, counters and online.
