He may or may not have a point…

Ooh, yeah! There’s an Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick shade called Brat. And I might be a brat; therefore, I will wear Brat, and I will be extra bratty, with a side of brat, when I wear it. 🙂

Round two of the UD Vice Liquid Lipstick swatches (here was round one: the red and orange shades)! These are the pinks, nudes and browns…and some funky brownish taupe business (see: Studded).

Just like the reds and oranges from the other day, these all look amaze-balls in pics. Even the metallics! I was so surprised. I had so much drama with the first metallic I tried from this line, golden orange Flame, which was basically a mess on my lips, but all of the metallics in this second batch are flawless. No vertical lip lines, patchiness, no drama.

I think Amulet looks particularly beautiful. I’m not normally a metallics person, either, but I’m totally into it.

These are unscented, unflavored and hella pigmented. And for $18, they aren’t crazy expensive. Plus, yay! — the line is finally available on the Urban Decay website.

Testing these, I was hoping for better wear time than I got with the red shade I wore the other day, 714, and well…

I wore warm pinkish nude Naked, an absolutely GORGEOUS shade that looks similar to my natural lip color, to my HIIT class the other day, which starts 10 in the morning, and after getting my sweat on, driving home, nibbling on snacks, guzzling some water, devouring lunch and doing some work, the lipstick was practically gone by 2.

So that’s four hours.

There was still some color in the middle of my bottom lip, but everything on my upper lip and the edges of my bottom lip was basically gone.

Granted, being a nude, it doesn’t look as jarring as it does when red 714, for instance, gives up the ghost, but I’m still kinda bummed that these don’t appear to last as long as I’d hoped, especially since a big part of the marketing is their “insane wear.”

I still gotta give a shout-out to the fact that these feel sooo comfortable on my lips. So many liquid lipsticks suck the life out of my lips and leave them painfully dry, but these don’t. My flakes don’t act up at all either, so if comfort is a higher priority for you than a crazy long wear time, that’s something to think about. You might really like these, because they feel great.

I’ll be posting swatches of the final batch (the purples) soon. Do you see anything from this batch of pinks and browns that you like?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. What are you doing this weekend? The rain finally let up over here, so I’m looking forward to getting out of the house. 🙂

Yay for Chanel Noir Pétrole Waterproof Eye Liner! I’m also wearing the Chanel Codes Élégants quad on my eyes, Chanel Élégance Powder Blush on my cheeks and Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo in Peacemaker

Why, though?

WHY? Why are so many of the best things limited edition? It’s lunacy, and it’s REALLY annoying. Chanel Noir Pétrole Eyeliner ($33) deserves a permanent position — like the Codes Subtils quad — because if you have brown eyes (and even if you don’t), it’s magic.

Glossy, smoky perfection

I recognize that it’s OTT to get this excited about eyeliners, seeing as there are so many flashier products out there in Makeupville, but I love a schmexy liner, and this one is schmexy.

The color is a little hard to describe, but I’m gonna try. It’s a super dark, hella pigmented khaki black with an essence of golden shimmer for an otherworldly finish that begs the question, “How in the Milky Way did Chanel squeeze so much complexity into one little stick?” It boggles the mind. This beauty is glossy liner perfection.

Chanel Noir Pétrole

Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner in 931 Noir Pétrole, $33

Manna from heaven for brown-eyed babes (and boys!)

Sometimes when I wear this liner, it’ll look brown. Other times, more khaki. Other times still, more of a glossy blackish brown. Then I’ll catch a glance of myself in the mirror and see the shimmery gold winking at me, and I’ll be like totally feelin’ myself, LOL! “Who’s that girl in the mirror? Oh, ME?” 🙂 This liner will have you doing that. It looks amazing on brown eyes.

But it’s not just for brown eyes

I have a strong suspicion that Noir Pétrole will also enchant hazel eyes as well… I wish El Hub would let me play and put it on his lids. I’d ask, but he won’t even let me curl his luscious lashes (rude!).

Anyway, if you have hazel eyes and have a moment with this, you have to let me know.

chanel noir petrole eye closeup

I’m wearing Noir Pétrole on my lash lines and water lines; the eyeshadow is the Chanel Codes Élégants quad

The BEST liner formula, I swear

Noir Pétrole comes in Chanel’s waterproof Stylo Yeux formula, which you know I swear by and love to pieces. The Stylo Yeuxs are twist-up pencil liners, but they feel smooth and soft like a gel, so yay! — no tugging on those lash or water lines. They aren’t drying either. I think they feel fabulously comfy and last all day long.

Hoard it like your life depends on it

Sadly, this baby is limited edition for spring 2017. 🙁 Get it while you can before hoarders like your girl here snatch them all up, LOL! Whoops, did two of them just fall into my cart?

Sunshine…and rain

rain in the sunshine

The first time I went to Hawaii, I couldn’t believe the weather. It would pour down rain for five minutes, and then bam! — just like that, the sun would come out. And sometimes it would rain and be sunny at the same time.

Where I live in Novato, that happens a lot. The other morning I looked out my window, and it was raining and sunny at the same time. I’ve lived here for years, and it never gets old!

What does get old, however, is the rain… I feel like it’s been raining nonstop for days. I hope it lets up tomorrow, though, because I can’t be bothered to carry an umbrella while I do my Saturday morning errands. 🙂

What are your plans for the weekend, babe?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Isn’t it just so typical? Right when you’re ready to drive down to the neighborhood tattoo parlor to get a tattoo of your favorite Chanel blush, because you love it that much (ahem, Malice!), another one comes along and steals your heart away.

Just goes to show ya…getting a tattoo of your true love blush? Not a good idea.

OK, that sounded really dumb, but that’s OK. We’re just gonna roll with it. 🙂

That glimmer, tho!!

For me with Chanel Joues Contraste Powder Blush in 370 Élégance, it was love at first brush. The second this peachy golden bronzed brown glimmered on my cheek, I was like, what?! Come here, baby. You and me — we’re gonna ride or die together.

Chanel Élégance Blush

Chanel Élégance Blush

And it wasn’t just because of the color and how it goes with all 20 of the pink and peach lipsticks and glosses that occupy my purse at any given time, or because of the level of pigment (one or two layers and I’m good), how long it lasts, or how easily it blends. It was also the dainty, demure glimmer…

You guys, the glimmer. THE GLIMMER. The glow is a small step up from a satin — similar to the awesomesauce Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blushes, and you know I’m a fan of those.

Consider this: wonderful wear time

Élégance is available now for $45, which I know… I. Know. But consider this: This blush lasts an incredibly long time. I put it on right after breakfast the other day (Oatmeal with a handful of chocolate chips… OMG, try it sometime! It’s life changing.), and after a full day and dinner, I still saw it on my cheeks. It was at least nine hours later!

chanel elegance blush

Lovin’ this Chanel Élégance Blush!

Similar Chanel shades?

For the gals who’ve been hoarding/collecting Joues Contraste blushes for years, Élégance is like 58 Fresque’s and 84 Accent’s sister shade. It’s darker than Fresque and more shimmery and peachier than Accent, but they’re all in the same fam and look related.

The verdict

First, this cutie is permanent! Yeah! So it’s not going anywhere, thank goodness. I think it’s a Chanel home run. 🙂

Gym lighting hates me…

I am BEYOND sore today, because I went to my HIIT class yesterday for the first time since I caught that cold I had, so it’s been over a week since the last time I burpied and push-upped, and I feel like I wrestled a meat grinder. I can barely climb up the stairs, and the baby feels like she tripled in weight overnight.

The class moved, so it’s at an actual gym now. It used to be in my neighbor’s garage down the street. She had an at-home studio, but now she’s teaching the classes at a gym a quick 5-minute drive from my house.

Anyway, I hadn’t taken a real workout class at a gym since forever, and the lighting in there is SO ROUGH. Oh, my goodness. Every time I see myself in those gym mirrors, I feel like I’m looking at the face of an alien.

So rough.

I think I’m gonna have to figure something out, maybe some brow filler or something… Either that, or I’ll show up to class in sunglasses (Oh, don’t mind me. I’m just doin’ mah squats in mah sunnies!), which, by the way, I learned from Mariah Carey’s reality TV show.

Apparently, whenever Mariah has a dance rehearsal and the lighting in the room is overhead fluorescent, she does the entire rehearsal wearing sunglasses.

LOL! I find this weirdly inspirational… High maintenance and diva-esque, of course, but also weirdly inspirational. 🙂

Karen

Getting my glow on with the Chanel Les Ombres Multi-Effect Eyeshadow Quad in 274 Codes Élégants ($61, new for spring)

Between the new Chanel Les Ombres Multi-Effect Eyeshadow Quad in 278 Codes Subtils, and this one I’m wearing now, 274 Codes Élégants, both of which are $61 each and new for spring, I’m convinced that Chanel is at the front of the pack when it comes to shimmery shades for ladies 30 and up.

chanel codes elegants

Chanel Les Ombres Multi-Effect Eyeshadow Quad in 274 Codes Élégants

Codes Élégants, like Codes Subtils, is $61, but unlike Codes Subtils, Élégants is permanent. And I kinda wish it was the other way around!

chanel codes elegants

Codes Élégants on my eyes, Chanel Coco Code Blush Harmony on my cheeks and Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo in Explorer on my lips

Not that this quad doesn’t have a lot going for it. It does! — like that glow, for one, and a silky, easy-to-blend formula. And the finish on that brown shade? SO GORGEOUS! Can I just get that on its own with the special sauce on the side? Please? The satiny finish shines on the down low. You can barely tell it’s there, but it’s there, and you know I live for that subtle sh*t, LOL! I’m so predictable… Yes, workhorse, everyday satins. I love ’em.

chanel codes elegants

The thing is…the other three shadows in the quad — the two golden shades and the platinum — all look like slightly different versions of the same highlighter on my skin. They look very similar on me, so I don’t think I’ll be able to do as many different looks with this quad as I could with Codes Subtils, which has a more classic combo of one darker shade, two mid-toned shades and a highlighter.

I know that four shadows doesn’t seem like a lot in this world of 12-pan and 24-pan eye palettes, but you can really do a lot with four shadows if they’re the right four shadows, and if two of them are mid-tones. The mid-tones are totally key.

Swatches of Codes Élégants

If you’re a lighter lass, the subtle differences among the gold shades will probably be more noticeable for you. For me, however, this quad is just OK. It’s certainly worthy of some love from the right guy or gal. It’s Chanel quality all the way, and that dark brown shade is pure melted chocolate perfection.

Of the two new Chanel spring quads, though, Codes Subtils is much more useful for me. I’m fan-girling on it so hard!

A big birthday coming up…in 2032

Connor’s first birthday is March 2nd, and I’ve asked my family to consider giving her letters, cards or other things that they’d like her to have when she’s 16. I’m going to put them all away in a box, and give them to her on March 2nd, 2032.

HOLY SH*T. Sorry, I just realized how far away that date is… Not to sound morbid or anything, but since El Hub and I are older parents, I just don’t know if our parents (a.k.a. Connor’s grandparents) will still be around then. And I really want to make sure that she has something special to open when she turns 16.

But now I’m not sure what I’m going to get her. I’m thinking some books, of course, including a copy of The Girl’s Guide: Getting the Hang of Your Whole Complicated, Unpredictable, Impossibly Amazing Life, which might be outdated in some ways, but I’m sure that some of the lessons will still apply.

I’m also toying with the idea of a charm bracelet from Tiffany that says, “I love you,” but I’m afraid the silver might tarnish after sitting in a box for 15 years. Do you think that would happen?? I don’t know!

Please let me know if you have any other ideas for timeless, thoughtful gifts for a 16-year-old Connor. I would love your help.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick in Tryst, $18, and one of 30 Vice Liquid Lipsticks in a completely new line from UD

Apparently, I have been remiss in keeping up with my gossip/pop culture blog reading, because I had no idea what a trap queen was.

Do you? Because when I saw this new Vice Liquid Lipstick from Urban Decay, I was like, “What the hell is a trap queen??” Is she the queen of setting traps? Does she hunt? What’s the deal?

Well, apparently, it’s a song, and it’s about a bad-@ss chick.

So there you go. It’s just a glimpse into my future. I can see it now… Connor Claire will throw out pop culture references, and I won’t get them.

The new Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipsticks

Trap Queen is one of 30 brand new $18 Vice Liquid Lipsticks, a new line coming soon from Urban Decay. (To find out exactly when they arrive, you can sign up on the Urban Decay website, and they’ll let you know.)

Most of the 30 shades are mattes, and there are also a few metallics. Not all of the shades will be available everywhere, either. Some of them will only be available on the Urban Decay website and at freestanding UD stores (there’s a list below).

I hope you don’t mind if I break these up into a couple of posts, because Baby Girl is due for lunch (a chicken-apple-sweet potato puree), and she can’t wait for mommy to finish swatching two dozen liquid lipsticks for hours (she’s actually “talking” about it right now, a.k.a. “baby talking really loudly,” and I can’t hear myself think).

The oranges and reds

She did, however, allow me to swatch the reds, and I can already tell this much about this line: they look breathtaking in pics! Like, if I just slept in a chaise lounge all day long while people snapped pictures of me, and I didn’t have to eat or drink or interact with anyone ever, my matte lip game would be SO on point.

Of this first batch here, Flame (has a metallic finish) looks like a hot mess up close, with vertical lip lines galore, but somehow it still looks AMAZING in pics.

urban decay liquid lipstick reds

Six of the seven red shades in the Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick line from the top: Crimson, Trap Queen, 714, Tryst, Tilt and Flame

Pigment = YASSS

These are intensely pigmented (you don’t need to apply much), and the unscented, unflavored formula isn’t drying.

What about the wear time?

I wore shade 714 for about six hours today, by which time I’d finished two meals and two big jugs of water. I also went through several tissues filled with nasty green snot (sorry…I’m getting over a cold right now), and kissed the back of my hand approximately 50 times to simulate approximately how many times I would have normally kissed Connor, and 714 didn’t hold up well.

The color around the edge of my upper lip and in the middle area had all but disappeared. Most of the color on my lower lip was still there, but it was hanging out with my lip flakes, so I’m not sold on the wear time of these yet. I don’t think they last as long as the MAC Retro Mattes, but I’ll keep you posted as I keep playing with them.

What’s the take-home message so far?

Even though I don’t think these will last as long on my lips as some other liquid lipstick formulas, they look AMAZING in pics when they’re freshly applied. If I were wearing them and living that paparazzi life, kickin’ it with the Kardashians…

Wait — forget that. I wouldn’t want to do that. Kanye looks like a handful, and I’d be that one person in the crew constantly rolling her eyes.

But I digress… 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Speaking of songs (from when we were talking about Trap Queen?), I heard this one by Kelis for the first time in ages. I had iTunes set to “random,” and it came up while Connor and I were doing our daily dose of mommy/baby dance time.

It got me thinking about how you just never know what you’ll be doing in life the next time you hear a certain song. Like, the last time I heard this song was probably 10 years ago, because I used to have the CD in my car, and I’d listen to it when I’d drive to my job at the literary agency (a.k.a “the place where I got stuck behind a fax machine for 15 minutes one day”).

I had no idea way back then that I’d still be blogging in 2017 and listening to the song again while dancing with my daughter. Life is crazy, huh?
