Trying something a little bolder

Nothing like playing with new makeup to make getting ready in the morning a little less painful.

I’ve been experimenting with the MAC Fashion Pack collection this week and snapped these pictures one morning before going to work. It was so gray and gloomy outside that I decided to go all out with my FOTD.

Well, “all out” is a relative term. Normally I stick to neutrals for my going-to-work makeup routine, but sometimes it’s nice to switch things up a bit.

Lots of bold colors in the MAC Fashion Pack collection

“Lead the way with a new wave of front-row worthy hues. Fuchsia, violet, emerald, deepest plum, midnight…ready to wear, any way we dare! So, be a doll and show us how — the Fashion Pack is always in the know.” -MAC

For this makeup look, I used a few of the shadows in the new Runway Worthy Eye Shadow x 9 palette. I used Dress Me Up all over my lids, Runway Worthy in the inner corners to brighten my eyes, and then applied sparkly violet Zip Me Up along my lower lash line.

I finished with navy blue MAC Fluidline Pen in Indelibly Blue for a nice winged liner. It’s dark enough to define, but the dark blue isn’t as harsh as black.

I rarely wear eyeliner, but this one is so easy to apply that I’m thinking I may have to wear liner more often :-).

This x 9 palette has lots of bold colors, and it intimated me a little, but after playing around with them, I can see why MAC chose this lineup of colors.

They look really nice together, and you can work them into so many different looks!

So, yeah, I guess you could say that MAC knows what it’s doing, LOL.

More MAC Fashion Pack collection reviews/goodness

The lipsticks in this collection are gorgeous, so I had a hard time choosing which one to wear with this look. I ended up going with By Special Order, which is a red/fuchsia with a stunning Amplified finish.

OMG, this lipstick is so smooth and creamy, but it doesn’t feel thick at all. Love. It. Definitely check this one out. There are lots of red lipsticks on the market, but I think this one is special. It’s right in that middle ground between red and pink.

The four lipsticks in the launch — Pressed & Ready (a soft whitened nude with a Lustre finish), Aim For Gorgeous (a bright fuchsia with a Matte finish), By Special Order (a deep reddened fuchsia with an Amplified finish) and Stylist’s Tip (a deep violet with an Amplified finish) — are all incredibly smooth and pigmented, and the darker colors absolutely LAST.

You can check out the new MAC Fashion Pack Runway Worthy Eye Shadow x9 and Fluidline Pens here.

I applied Stylist’s Tip one morning before work, and when I got home at the end of the day, it looked good! — and this was with my near-constant eating and drinking, and without a single touchup.

Here are some swatches…

And photos of me wearing them…

Wearing Pressed & Ready, the one color that doesn’t work for me, I think

Alright…Pressed & Ready is very light, but it feels smooth and comfortable. I was tempted to doctor it up with a brown lip liner but thought that would be against my ethical duties as a beauty blogger, LOL.

This one just doesn’t quite work for me, but it is a pretty pink-toned nude.

Wearing Aim For Gorgeous

Matte finish Aim For Gorgeous is actually easy to apply and surprisingly comfortable, considering that sometimes matte lipsticks can tug on my lips. This one has a really nice texture.

Wearing By Special Order

I love By Special Order’s slightly glossy finish. It has an Amplified finish, which is one of my favorite finishes from MAC.

Here’s a breakdown of my look

NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer in Annapurna // Maybelline Instant Age Rewind concealer in Honey // MAC Prep + Prime CC Colour Correcting Loose Powder in Neutralize // NARS Dual-Intensity blush in Sexual Content (the right side) // MAC Snappy Style eyeshadow from the Runway Worthy palette all over the lid and Runway Worthy along the inner corners // Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara // Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Dark Brown // Dior Brow Styler Gel in Brown.

Wearing Stylist’s Tip — my favorite one of these four!

I wasn’t expecting to LOVE Stylist’s Tip, but wow. I always admire people who can pull off purple lips but have a hard time finding a perfect purple shade that works for me. But this color drives me wild, and it doesn’t make my teeth look super yellow (can I get an Amen??). It applies like a dream, too, and lasts all day. I can’t say enough good things about Stylist’s Tip.

So, what do you think? Will you be snatching up any of these MAC Fashion Pack lipsticks?

While the last MAC collection I reviewed was full of soft, sparkly shadows, the new MAC Fashion Pack collection, which arrives online June 9, 2016 and in stores June 23 through July 28, has bangin’ bold, vibrant colors.

We usually get lots of pastels this time of year, so these deep purples and saturated pinks are a nice departure.

MAC Cosmetics Runway Worthy Eye Shadow x 9

Most of the shadows are Satins or Frosts, but there is a smile-inducing 🙂 glittery pink right in the middle called Available in Petite.

Here’s a comparison between the Runway Worthy palette and a single MAC Eye Shadow…

fashion pack eyes

Runway Worthy Eye Shadow x 9 compared to a single MAC Eye Shadow

The Eye Shadow x 9 palettes are pretty small, which is a mixed blessing. On the plus side, they’re great for travel.

Here are swatches of the Eye Shadows and Fluidline Pens…

MAC Fluidline Pen swatches

MAC Fluidline Pens (L-R): Retro Black, Privet and Indelibly Blue

This palette to me represents both the best and worst of MAC Eye Shadows, because there’s a lot of variety among the colors, which is great, and, overall, I think the selection’s unique. I also particularly like the shade called Hypnotizing because it has a bit of warmth to it, making it a more wearable gray for me.

On the other hand, the quality seems to be a bit inconsistent. The deepest purple color (Nice Fit) isn’t very smooth, and Snappy Style takes several layers to reach fully opacity. I think that whether or not this palette is a must-have for you depends on how much you like the colors… To be sure you’re happy with the quality, I do suggest trying them out in person.

At first, Runway Worthy made me think of the Burgundy Times Nine palette (swatches here), but as soon as I got them side by side, the colors looked totally different.

MAC Fashion Pack

As for the Fluidline Pens, of course black liner is a staple, but Indelibly Blue (a deep navy blue) and Privet (sea green) are so pretty!

I’m not always into super bold eye makeup, but these colors are perfect for adding just a little something-something.

The MAC Fluidline Pens compared to a Kat Von D Tattoo Liner

I’m no pro when it comes to liquid liner, so it’s nice that the Fluidline Pens have a tip that isn’t flimsy. I’m able to get a pretty good wing with them and don’t really have any issues with them running into my eyes.

The tips of the Fluidline Pens are perfect!

Oh, if you’re interested, here’s a fuller breakdown of the look I’m wearing:

NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer in Annapurna // Veil Cosmetics Illuminating Complexion Fix in Medium (to highlight/conceal under my eyes) // MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Dark // MAC Blush in Raizin // MAC Soft Serve Eye Shadow in Put Me To Shame (swatches in this post here) as a base for Hypnotizing Eye Shadow from the Runway Worthy palette // Privet Fluidline Pen // Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara // Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Dark Brown // Dior Brow Styler Gel in Brown // NYX Lipliner Pencil in Chocolate (swatches here) // MAC Pressed & Ready Lipstick (pics and swatches coming soon!).

What’s your opinion of the Runway Worthy Eye Shadow x 9 palette? Do you have any of MAC’s other nine-pan palettes?

MAC Prep+Prime Highlighter Pens

Ta-da! Using the MAC Prep + Prime Highlighter pens ($26 each) to “pep up” my under-eyes

I’m guessing that by now you’re all getting tired of hearing me bang on about how tired I am.

But really, it’s a vicious cycle. I recently read a meme on Facebook (don’t judge me) while scrolling through my feed during the wee hours of sleeplessness with a fussy baby that read, “Parenting is the constant battle between going to bed to catch up on some sleep or staying awake to finally get some alone time.”

L-O-L, is that ever true!

Hopefully for this tired mama, MAC’s new $26 Prep+Prime Highlighter click pens can help. They’re supposed to “effectively [bring] a soft, sheer wash of colour to skin.”

But first, can we briefly pause to appreciate the shimmering — dare I say sexy? — packaging? I’m in love with these boxes and tubes…

MAC Prep + Prime Highlighters

The MAC Prep + Prime Highlighters in all their glittery packaged glory!

MAC Prep + Prime Highlighters

Out of focus (on purpose) because I love the tiny shimmers in the packaging!

Available in nine shades (including two correctors in peach and rose) to suit a wide range of skin tones, the Prep+Prime Highlighters are MAC’s answer to YSL’s eponymous Touche Eclat Stylo. Creamy and easy to apply thanks to the gentle brush head from which the product is dispensed, these highlighters do dry down quickly and oxidize slightly to a somewhat deeper tone than I’d expect based on the swatches.

Although the two shades on the right are just too deep for my complexion, any of the first three on the left would suit my skin tone, depending on what I want and need. The one called Light, for instance, is a classic highlighting concealer, while Medium would be better suited to cancel out the blue tones under my eyes.

MAC Prep + Prime Highlighters

MAC Prep + Prime Highlighters (L-R): Light, Medium, Medium Plus, Dark, Dark Deep

In true tired-working-mom-yet-adamant-makeup-lover fashion, I was bitten by the urge to play with makeup just after bedtime on Wednesday.

“Bedtime shmedtime,” I thought to myself and decided that there would be no better time to test the illuminating powers of MAC’s Prep+Prime Highlighters.

The makeup you see below in the first shot is true, un-touched-up 14-hour makeup after parenting and a long day at work. While I’m generally pleased with how it held up, I wouldn’t be so thrilled with the evident signs of fatigue in my under-eye area if I chose to go out for a date night with my husband.

MAC Prep+Prime Highlighter in Light to the rescue! A few pats of this illuminating concealer under my eyes and around my nose, and a quick re-powder, and my makeup looked new again.

And I’ll let you in on a little secret… After loyally using YSL’s Touche Eclat for years, I think I may like MAC’s rendition better!

MAC Prep + Prime Highlighters

You caught me yawning! My makeup looks about as tired as I feel after a long day at work and an early morning with two kiddos.

MAC Prep + Prime Highlighters

In action, topping off my lived-in makeup with a little bit of glow!

I can’t say enough about these MAC Prep+Prime Highlighters. I’ve already given two of them to fellow tired mom friends who are always looking for purse-friendly pick-me-ups, and I will most certainly be repurchasing Light once it’s clicked its last click.

Do you have a go-to “quick fix” for your makeup after a long day?

Wearing the MAC Soft Serve Shadows in Big Bad Blue and Put Me To Shame ($22 each, available online starting May 26, 2016; in stores June 2 through July 14)

Seriously, sparkly cream eyeshadows are my go-to shadows most mornings (if I’m wearing eyeshadow at all), and I LOVE this cushiony cream-to-powder formula. I am 100% completely onboard with these creamy new MAC Soft Serve Shadows. There are 11 of them in the new Soft Serve collection with lots of pretty shimmer!

I think you’ll love these if you also like the Dior Fusion Mono or Chanel Illusion D’Ombre cream eyeshadows because the formulas are very similar. I like applying them with my fingers because they’re easy to build up and blend, but once they set, they stay put.

Basically, these are my dream eyeshadows.

Aren’t these colors delicious?

The 11 shades

  • Bounce Around (Light, cool taupey silver)
  • Cushy Life (Light warm golden beige)
  • Best Make Up (Light golden highlighter)
  • Plead Gilty (Vibrant sparkling gold)
  • Quite Yummy! (Light pink)
  • So So Saucy (Mid-tone peach)
  • Put Me to Shame (Mid-tone dirty taupe)
  • Softened Up (Mid-tone warm brown)
  • Girls, Girls! (Soft pastel purple)
  • Big Bad Blue (Soft pastel blue)
  • Jealous Girl (Mint green)

I think these are perfect if you like a nice wash of color and lots of shimmer and sparkle. I don’t get any fallout, and they’re also very long lasting, so they’re right up my alley. I’m sure I’ll be using them a lot as the weather keeps getting better and better and I venture further away from my normal neutrals.

I also LOVE Big Bad Blue and Jealous Girl. They’re so perfect for dipping your toe into brighter colors without going all into the deep end, you know? Quite Yummy and So So Saucy are my favorites of the more natural shades because, well, I love pinks and peaches.

These swatches are with just a single pass of shadow, by the way, but you can also build them up for more opacity.

It’s also nice that the covers match the eyeshadow shades. That’s just a small detail, but it makes it easy to find the color you’re looking for when you’re in a hurry.

Good enough to eat?

Here I used Big Bad Blue on my lids and blended it out with Put Me To Shame.

The other stuff I’m wearing today: Giorgio Armani Maestro Glow Foundation in 8 // MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Dark // Jouer Peach Bouquet blush // Anastasia Beverly Hills So Hollywood Illuminator // Bite Beauty Gingersnap lipstick // Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Dark Brown // Dior Brow Styler Gel in Brown // Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara // MAC Soft Serve Shadows in Big Bad Blue and Put Me To Shame.

Do you think you’ll scoop (haha) up one of these Soft Serve Shadows when they come out? Which one?
