The lion’s share of the MAC Brooke Candy collection are definitely the amazing lippies, but the other items that sparked my interest were the eye glosses. I’d never used an eye gloss before, but I’d seen them floating around the YouTube-o-sphere, and they always looked so interesting to me.

There are two in this collection — White-Yin and Black-Yang.

Brooke Candy MAC Eye Gloss

White-Yin MAC Eye Gloss ($23; a clear gloss with multicolored micro-shimmer)

MAC Brooke Candy Eye Gloss in Black Yang

Black-Yang MAC Eye Gloss ($23; a black/blue gloss with red and blue micro-shimmer)

Not gonna lie, I’m not quite sure what to think of these… I think they’re made for a very specific kind of look and a very specific kind of person.

I love what Jessica did with some of the other MAC Eye Glosses to create a cool, editiorial, grunge-y look, but no matter what you do, you’ll end up with creased, oily-looking eye makeup, which, obviously, isn’t everyone’s cup o’ tea.

They are also crazy sticky, which I guess makes sense for what they are, but they feel so weird on my eyelids. I just can’t deal with it. As you open your eyes and blink, things just stick together.

White-Yin MAC Eye Gloss (a clear gloss with multi colored micro-shimmer)

White-Yin MAC Eye Gloss ($23; a clear gloss with multicolored micro-shimmer)

Black-Yang MAC Eye Gloss (a black/blue gloss with red and blue micro-shimmer)

Black-Yang MAC Eye Gloss ($23; a black/blue gloss with red and blue micro-shimmer)

I wanted to do a more wearable look using White-Yin, but I think I kind of failed. I had this vision of myself using a shimmery champagne eye shadow all over my lid, then putting the clear gloss on top, and I thought I’d end up with this lovely, angelic eye look, but instead I got… Well, I don’t really know what I got, but I didn’t get that. I don’t hate it, but I definitely don’t love it either.

While I got the shine I was looking for, the eye shadow I put underneath chunked up and got nasty. I just wasn’t a huge fan of how it looked. I might try using it completely on its own without anything under it to see if that gives me a better result.

You couldn’t have any foundation or anything on underneath it, though, ’cause that would get nasty too.

All in all, these eye glosses do exactly what they’re supposed to do, so they’re not bad by any means! But they create a very specific look that isn’t for everyone.

What do you think? Have you ever worn eye gloss before?

Hi, beautiful! I’m Jen from Jen Leigh Beauty. Now, rather than just talking to myself about makeup, I write it down in a blog. Besides being madly in love with anything I can smear on my face (and sharing pics on Instagram), I’m more in love with my hunky husband, my sweet 2-year-old, and my fluffy fur baby. Thank goodness they put up with the madness, because I love chatting about my favorite things with people who understand the addiction.

Rocking the organic look with Juice Beauty Cream Shadow Stick in Cove, and Satin Lip Cream in Cabernet as a base topped with Liquid Lip in Gwyneth

Although the day will have long since passed by the time you read this post, I started writing it on Earth Day (long story), and while I’m not exactly the world’s foremost expert on green beauty, I love it, and I love seeing what the brands that specialize in organic beauty products have to offer.

Juice Beauty is a well-respected brand in the world of organic, earth-friendly makeup, and they call themselves “the organic solution.” They incorporate a host of plant based ingredients into their products and make it clear that they want you to look at the list of common cosmetic industry ingredients that their products are formulated without.

Juice Beauty Spring 2016

New juicy treats from Juice Beauty!

Juice Beauty Spring 2016

Bright pops of organic color and sleek, chic packaging

Though I’ve previously dabbled in Juice Beauty’s extensive skin care line (their award winning Green Apple Peel is seriously amazing), I’ve never used the brand’s cosmetics before. They recently launched a number of new products this spring, and I’ve been taking some of them out for a spin.

The Phyto-Pigments Cream Shadow Sticks ($22.00 each) come in an array of neutral, eye color-enhancing shades.

Oh, bear in mind that naturally formulated makeup doesn’t usually last as long as synthetically formulated products, but they aren’t intended to. With that in mind, although these shadow sticks do crease on me after only four hours, they otherwise live up to my high expectations and apply like a dream.

Cove, a shimmering shell neutral, brightens the eyes all on its own, but it also pairs perfectly with brighter pops of powder shadow when used as a base (that’s how I’m wearing it in my portrait up above).

Juice Beauty Spring 2016

Cream Shadow Stick 01 Cove

I adore the combination of the Satin Lip Cream in Cabernet (one of eight; $24 each) blended and mattified as a base for the Liquid Lip in Gwyneth (one of eight; also $24 each).

PHYTO-PIGMENTS Cream Shadow Stick Ingredients:

Helianthus annus (organic sunflower seed oil)*, organic tapioca starch*, octyldodecyl dimer dilinoleyl alcohol/succinic acid copolymer, copernicia cerifera (organic carnauba wax)*, butyrospermum parkii (organic shea butter)*, zea mays (organic corn starch)*, silica, helianthus annus (sunflower seed wax), glyceryl caprylate, malus domestica fruit cell culture extract, citrus limonum leaf cell extract, vitis vinifera fruit cell extract, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (Vitamin C), tocopherol (Vitamin E), vegetable glycerin, magnesium silicate, betaine (plant derived), phospholipids (plant derived), vitis vinifera (grape seed oil), eclipta prostrata (false daisy extract), eclipta prostrata (false daisy leaf extract), moringa oleifera seed oil. May contain: titanium dioxide, iron oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), mica.

While the Satin Lip Cream is a big grittier than I’m used to, it functions almost like a lip liner for Gwyneth, which is by no means your average liquid lipstick. These days we’ve come to think of liquid lipsticks as a quick drying formula that wears matte, but Juice Beauty’s rendition feels like a literal melted lipstick. It’s glossy, emollient and a little goes a very long way!

Chocolate.

Just let that word sink in for a minute… Meditate on it. Close your eyes, and think of every scent and thought and feeling you get when you open a big box of chocolates.

Laura Geller The Truffles Collection

Clockwise from the top: The Laura Geller “The Truffles Collection” palettes in Chocolate Plum Cordial, Chocolate Toffee, Chocolate Pistachio and Chocolate Truffle

That’s the feeling Laura Geller wants chocolate-loving makeup aficionados to feel when they feast their eyes on the generously sized “The Truffles Collection,” currently available for $45 (a $168 value!). You could treat Mom to a chocolate shadow extravaganza for Mother’s Day (It’s Sunday May 8th, ladies and gentlemen. Do not forget your mama!), or snag this delicious box of coco-inspired baked shadows for yourself.

Laura Gellar The Truffles Collection

Laura Gellar, The Truffles Collection

The Truffles Collection comes with four separate palettes, each based around a different coco treat, and all are packaged in a big box that opens much like a classic box of chocolates. The individual palettes are housed in colorful metallic cardboard that matches the “flavor” therein.

Baked shadow perfection, just as satisfying as digging into an actual box of chocolates!

Laura Geller The Truffles Collection

  • Chocolate Plum Cordial, a berry-hued assortment, contains Marble, a matte pinkish off white; Frosting, a metallic pinked taupe; and Fig, a classic metallic plum.
  • Chocolate Toffee, a rich caramel-hued palette, includes Slate, a rich matte tan; Brown Sugar, a rich shimmering golden brown; and Mahogany, a deep red-toned matte brown.
  • Chocolate Truffle is dark chocolate lover’s dream with Mushroom, a matte cool toned tan; Smoke, a metallic true taupe; and Licorice, a smooth, matte black.
  • Chocolate Pistachio is an interesting mix with Vanilla, a true matte cream; Vintage, a warm-toned shimmering gold; and Forest, a unique shimmering deep green with red glitter.

Chocolate Pistachio (left to right): Vanilla, Vintage, Forest

My favorite (and favorite truffle, what a coincidence!) is Chocolate Pistachio, which stands out the most to me among the four palettes, and among the shadows in it, Forest is unlike anything I’ve used before. When applied wet with a bit of water, it leaves a stunning deep sheen with red glitter sitting seductively on top. I’m wearing it with Vintage, and with Vanilla on my brown bone, in the pic at the top… What a shade!

The only downside I see with these, and I fear you may have known this pun was coming…but The Truffles Collection is literally like a box of chocolates in that you never know what you’re gonna get. The shades are stunning! — and they swatch beautifully, but they’re a bit unpredictable to apply. Some of the mattes apply like a dream, while others go on patchy, and many of the metallic hues don’t blend as well as I expected. Fortunately, as the shadows are baked, they can easily be applied with a flat synthetic brush and a bit of water for a lovely foiled look.

Which of these four palettes is your favorite? Does that coincide with your favorite kind of chocolate, or was that just me? :)

Getting grunge with MAC Studio Eye Gloss in Noticeably Noir and Medoc

Do you ever want to pull out all of your makeup and do an eye look that you would otherwise never wear? This grownup “play time” — I constantly crave it. Constantly. And lately I’ve been toying with the idea of a 100% black smoky eye.

This neutral-loving girl has almost always approached smoke safely, rarely venturing out into the deeper end of her Urban Decay Naked palettes…

Aaand then the MAC Studio Eye Glosses happened, and I could no longer resist my desire to experiment.

I mean, indulging in makeup play time is a hard job, but someone’s gotta do it, right? :) In the interest of makeup experimentation, I think I’m up to the task.

MAC Studio Eye Gloss

(Left to Right): MAC Studio Eye Gloss in Lightly Tauped, Honey Money, Medoc and Noticeably Noir

I can’t help but notice that the MAC Studio Eye Glosses don’t always get the best reviews…but I think they’re a runway makeup artist’s dream. They’re also temperamental and require some patience, just like an expensive sports car. The eye gloss trend definitely falls more into the editorial/runway makeup category than the everyday makeup lover category that most makeup lovers are comfortable with.

They come in a carefully curated range of colors ($22 each) intended to really amplify your eye looks with a new texture, rather than a new shadow finish.

MAC Studio Eye Gloss

(Left to Right): MAC Studio Eye Gloss in Lightly Tauped, Honey Money, Medoc and Noticeably Noir

I couldn’t wait to get my greedy little paws into these beautiful, shimmering gel pots, and the first thing I noticed when I did was their texture. I expected something more along the lines of a gritty lip balm…but they have a smooth consistency, more along the lines of an emollient glue stick.

Don’t let that description fool you, though. I was concerned that once I applied these, my lids would feel “stuck” when I tried to open my eyes, but that didn’t happen. My lids looked glossy and felt surprisingly comfortable.

Lightly Tauped, a light beige gloss with pearl, is exactly the kind of shade that I like to wear in lip glosses to top off other more matte shades.

And guess what? These also work the same way on top of lipsticks, just like a gloss. I may even wear this beauty on my lips all on its own!

Honey Money, a true yellow gold metallic glitter, looks absolutely gorgeous when layered over foiled gold eye shadow for a blindingly bright, incredibly reflective metallic eye.

Seductively gorgeous Medoc is a deep blackened burgundy that reflects ruby (ooh!). I think it’s beautiful on its own, but it also pairs perfectly with Noticeably Noir, a black with multicolored glitter.

To say that I’ve had fun playing with these would be an understatement. For this look, I started with my trusty MAC Painterly Paint Pot, topped it with my favorite matte black shadow, created the shape I wanted with a blending brush and a neutral brown shadow, and then piled on MAC Studio Eye Gloss with my fingertips. Then, to keep the look dark, I patted Noticeably Noir up to and just slightly above my crease and tapped Medoc toward the center of my eye for added dimension.

Getting grunge with MAC Studio Eye Gloss in Noticeably Noir and Medoc

Did this wear well? No…not in the traditional sense. You can see in the photographs that the Eye Gloss creates a lived-in editorial look that creases and shines.

And guess what? It’s supposed to look that way. You won’t see a negative review from this gal because MAC Studio Eye Gloss delivers on its promises and looks glossy and grunge chic. I see myself wearing it for nights on the town but, truth be told, I could easily be persuaded to wear it grocery shopping.

This experimental makeup lover wants to know: would you try a lived-in, glossy, grunge-inspired eye? And where do you stand on the eye gloss trend?

I’m still in love with the packaging…

Have you seen the four new Dual-Intensity Eyeshadows in the NARS Under Cover Summer 2016 Collection yet? They are incredible! I REALLY love the finish, because the shimmer is so soft, and they’re so crazy pigmented, that the fact that they’re also versatile and can be worn wet or dry is icing on the cake. You can use a fluffy brush to get just a wash of color, or you can dampen your brush and layer the colors to get more intensity.

Starting with Topless, a light seashell pink — I’m glad NARS included it, because it balances nicely with the bolder colors in the collection.

As for rich neutral brown Tan Lines, it’s neither too warm nor bronzey, but it doesn’t turn gray either, so I think it’s a great eyeshadow color, especially if you’re looking for a rich brown. The shimmer keeps it from being too plain.

And then there’s shimmering teal green Deep End — gorgeous! It reminds me of the waters off a tropical island! I mean, it’s not a color that I tend to wear…but it’s so beautiful.

Lastly, Pool Shark. It’s an iridescent blue with lots of purple shimmer, and it looks mostly blue in the pan, but as you can see in the pictures below, there’s also a lot of purple in it. It’s a really unique color, and I think you can get it to look more blue or purple, depending on how you wear it. I love colors like this because they always look a little different when you wear them!

Almost too pretty to use!

Swatches of the Summer 2016 Under Cover NARS Dual-Intensity Eyeshadows (L to R): Topless, Tan Lines, Deep End and Pool Shark (taken with flash)

These swatches are using a flash so that you can see how pretty the shimmer is in these eyeshadows!  I love how there are two bold shades and then two more neutral shades, so the collection is really balanced.  There’s definitely something for everyone.

Wearing the NARS Under Cover Collection (details below)

For the look I’m wearing here, I dampened my brush before applying Topless all over my lid. This helped build up the color so that I could get a nice pinky shade. Then I used a fluffy crease brush to lightly blend Tan Lines into my crease before dampening a pencil brush to apply Pool Shark along my lower lash line.

Would it be too much if I framed the packaging and kept it forever??

Here I’m wearing NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint in Malaga (I’ll have a full review on my blog soon, but I really like this) // NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Caramel // NARS Sexual Content blush (left side, applied with a damp brush). When I first reviewed this blush, I thought the left side would be too light for me, but I really like the soft glow that I got when I applied it with a damp brush. // NARS Get Dirty Lip Cover (LOVE this) // ColourPop Brow Pencil in Black N’ Brown // Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara.

After seeing everything in the NARS Under Cover Summer 2016 Collection, what are your favorite things? I definitely pick the Lip Covers, but I think it’s all amazing!

Don’t forget, the collection is limited edition. The eyeshadows are available now for $29.
