Are you happy with your nail clippers? I’m serious. The pair I’ve been using, which is just one of those regular foldable stainless steel ones, tears up my nails. I go through all the work to paint ’em and then use clippers that might as well be garden shears. It doesn’t make a lot of sense.
I still haven’t found a pair I’d swear by, and my nails could use a hand.
Any recommendations? Who makes the best nail clippers?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Hey Karen! My favorite pair of clippers are a pair I just got at Wal-Mart. They are very gentle but sharp at the same time. They are fairly large but I like them that way! I am not sure which brand they are though Im sorry! Maybe I will try to find the brand and let you know

I use the Sephora ones and haven’t had any problems!

I got a free manicure kit from YSL after buying a perfume from them which clips my nails nicely and in a cinch! I also HATE those nail clippers that make it so hard to cut your nails!
Heidi says
I use one from Tweezerman, I think it’s called Combo Clipper. It catches the clippings, which is really nice. No more flying clippings! I also soak my nails so their a bit softer before clipping them, which for me cuts down on the shredding problem.

I totally don’t know where the ones I use now are from; my bf had this little grooming case with big ones and little ones (clippers that is) but there is no name, and also, they aren’t my favorite. I used to have a pair that I got from CVS, one of their Beauty Essentials line, and I remember really liking those. However, where they are now, I have no idea….shame really…

I’ve been using the Revlon nail clippers you can get at the drugstore (often in the checkout aisle) for years and have been happy! I have only had to replace them once, so that’s two sets of nail clippers in about 10 years!
I bought a mani/pedi kit from Bath and Body Works a couple years ago, and while the tweezers it came with are AWESOME, the nail clipper doesn’t hold a candle to Revlon’s!
Amber says
Another vote for Revlon. Cheap and sharp.
Karen, seeing that picture after reading the title of the post gave me the woojies!

I have a pair by Trim and they are so sharp and amazing! I HIGHLY recommend them.

I’ve got a pair of Tweezerman’s that I really like. I haven’t tried enough clippers to be able to say that they are the best, but they always deliver smooth results and have never caused my nails to crack or peel.
ericajane says
i agree with the Tweezerman’s.. i also have the one that catches the clippings and the blades on it are very sharp, but they are still gentle on my nails..

i really love the sephora ones. large and small. well-made and cheap. how can you go wrong> i also love sephora’s glass nail file for a smooth clean edge.

I have the same friggen problem!

After 18years as a nail tech, I’ve found that regular clippers are (for me anyway), a challenge. I use nippers designed for clipping acrylic for thicker nails, and sturdy, sharp cuticle nippersmfor thinner nails. You can cut very precise and specific angles this way. Follow up w/ a 220grit file and you should be golden! One more thing: if you clip fingernails while they are wet(I.e. After a shower), the nail is more likely to “fray” and/or split. Try to trim when nails have been free of moisture for at least an hour. Hope this helps!:)

I forgot! my faces are Antoine, or Mehaz 🙂

I think I’ve always used a brand called Trim, just plain metal drugstore clippers and have never had a problem. The only ones that were really terrible were Revlon (I’ve had two pairs literally fall apart), and CVS Essence of Beauty ones that came in a little manicure kit that just were not good.

Revlon

I personally love Revlon’s – I get mine usually from Walgreen’s and they are the ones with a curved top part (whatever the thumb part is called!) and about 2 inches long. They’re comfortable to cut nails with, and despite my bad habit of cutting my nails while they are painted, the clippers don’t do any damage to the polish! (Thereby perpetuating this bad habit.)

I use a Revlon nail clipper that I loove! Its got a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, and Revlon will sharpen the nail file for free (you just need to pay for the shipping costs)!
natalie says
i find that any very sharp ones work great! cut through my nails like butter
anita says
I have a pair (I think they are Revlon?) that is literally 15 years old, and they have always worked for me. I swear they have gotten better with time, too.
Amee says
sorry cant help you… as i used the one which made by local brand available only in India… but its pretty sharp…
Kate & Zena says
I use one from Revlon, I believe.

I use the one from Sephora! Its great and sharp and has lasted me quite a while.

I like my Korean pair — I bought it in Korea but managed to find it in a Korean drugstore in LA. You should try a Korean or Japanese store!

I use a sapphire file instead of nail clippers! My nails used to shred really badly but now that I’ve started just filing my nails instead of cutting them I haven’t had any problems. When I do have to trim my nails (because there’s a chip or something that I can’t file out, or I can’t find my sapphire file), I borrow my roomie’s Tweezerman clippers 🙂
Alison says
I never use nail clippers, they just shatter my nails. I always use either my Essie or OPI crystal files to keep my nails trim.
leo says
NEVER use clippers! Use only a glass or ceramic file, you’ll notice the difference.

Revlon! Affordable and sharp!

I got a pair of nail clippers from Boots (I think it was the guy range clippers) because I wanted a larger one. Lovely and great tension 🙂
Janice says
I actually use the American Red Cross BABY nail clippers – the ones with the magnifying glass, he-he! Although I don’t use the magnifying glass part but the clippers are small enough that I get more control and don’t tear the nails (like I do when I use regular ones).
Candace says
I’ve got Revlon as well and have had them for years… may have stolen then from my mom at some point, actually! The ones I use are the larger pair though, maybe 3-3.5 inches long? The curve is bigger but they’re easier to handle as well 🙂

I use Tweezerman. I have two pair so that I still have one to use when I send the other back for sharpening. Get them sharpened periodically is key. OK, I’ll fess up. I bought the second pair when I couldn’t find the first. And of course found them about two minutes after I bought the second.
Lisa says
I don’t use nail clippers – a glass file takes off length really quickly and doesn’t cut into the nail the same way.

I bought a zebra patterned one from CVS that works brilliantly, but I don’t remember the name of the company. I bought it years ago. Like other have mentioned, Revlon makes one that works really well.

I love the Bath and Body Works nail clippers. The ones that are sold individually, not in a manicure set. But I can’t always find them in the store.
I’m thinking about trying the Tweezerman ones after reading the comments.
I just got an Ulta brand pair and will have to return them. They actually won’t cut my nails, which are thin and easy to cut. They just don’t have any leverage I guess. They don’t even leave a mark.
Paintthetownscarlet.wordpress.com says
I agree with above comments – Revlon is good!

Hi Karen,
I have found the best pair of nail clipper’s that are made by Lacross. The bottom of the clippers has an indention that makes it easier for your fingers to lye on and the top part of the clippers is white. The cutting part is made of stainless steel. I have looked every where for a pair for my friend for she loves these and so do I. I cannot find any ones that are as good as these. I have had them for years and they are still so sharpe.

Thou shalt not clip!
Seriously, clipping damages nails. I’ve been using a glass file for a while and my nails never break now!
Emma says
I use a glass file during the summer but my nails totally suffer during the winter so I just clip them short with manicare (NZ / Aussie brand) clippers and don’t bother to let them grow. Not very helpful but glass files are fantastic.
Hannah says
I like La Cross and Ms. Manicure.
Nina says
i have been using Trim – the one with the green easy grip handles.
Marian says
I never use clippers either. I file every week and keep them at a good length
Olga says
Not using nail clippers at all but nail files from diamancel are great 🙂

Oh, I’m totally biased, but we do. Denco, Denco, Denco. 🙂 Of course, I can say that because part of my job is trying every tweezer, clipper and beauty tool known to man. Of our styles, the one that gets the most raves is a stainless steel clipper from Japan (made by a company called Kai). Mehaz and Tweezerman also carry clippers from Kai (and you can find our stuff under the Ultra brand in beauty supplies). All of the drugstore brand clippers come from one of a dozen or so factories in China and they’re all relatively the same quality. No one actually manufactures clippers, tweezers, nippers, etc in the US anymore, so all the brands source from overseas. Some of us like to keep our key items in Europe, but most of the drugstore brands (Revlon, Trim, Lacross) opt for the more price-friendly China. If you care about country of origin, check the back of the cards/packages. If you ever have any other beauty tool questions, give me a shout. 🙂

la cross! i am mildly obsessed with mine. they are cheap, super sharp, and the curve is *perfect* for trims – it’s shaped perfectly to the arch of your finger so it leaves a really natural looking nail which i love
Amanda says
I love the Trim nail clippers! Target definitely sells them, Wal-mart – probably. Mine have are the kind with the removable rubber grippies – the bottom one also catches all your nail clippings, but I tend to remove it because I feel it is easier to clip that way. They always cut through on the first try. I like their cuticle nippers too, which also come with cushiony rubber grippies.

Hey Karen! Let me know when you get a good answer.

The best nail clippers I’ve ever bought (and have bought for years) are the ones you find at the Japanese supermarket (they are everywhere on the west coast). In the drugstore section you can find a variety. I like the slightly bigger ones, because they are easier to use on your big toes.
What’s amazing about the japanese nail clippers is their ultra-sharp blades. Much sharper than any american nail clipper I have ever used. They’re inexpensive as well, about the same price at just a couple bucks. Same price as something you would find at the drugstore
Whenever I go to cali to visit family (I’m from the east coast, philly) I always pick up a pair
Tiffany says
I forgot to mention that they are all built with a plastic where you hold them, which catch the clippings. The American nail clippers are typically just 2 pieces of click metal but the japanese kind have a little nail receptacle built in.
I saw someone else posted about a specific japanese brand. I’ve found that they are all pretty similar in style and I’ve always just bought whatever I see.
Vanessa says
Have you tried the Seki Edge fingernail and toenail clippers? These are Japanese nail clippers and they use tempered stainless steel and they are hand-finished which makes them really strong and sharp. They are rated #1 on Amazon.com. I have a pair and they are great. I’d say they are worth checking out. http://SekiEdge.com

I bought Stainless Steel and regular Toe Nail Clippers from a trade show company name Nobel Crafts. They claim their clippers open more then regular clippers in Market. Yes they are right I love their clippers and they have professional grade stuff. More better then big brand names.

I have super hard nails and very few clippers are capable of giving me a clean cut. I’ve tried Revlon, Trim, and Tweezerman. The sharpest fingernail clippers I’ve ever used are the ones from the baby isle at Walt-Mart. They’re small and have a white plastic round base.
