My voice is kinda gravelly this morning. It sounds like I spent the whole night eating Fruity Pebbles without any milk, and a big reason is because I spent part of last night locked in my bathroom yelling into a folded towel.
I know that sounds completely insane! — but hear me out. There was a method to my madness.
I had kind of a bad day yesterday. The morning started off fine, it was cool, lunch was fine, and then somewhere around 1 or 2, things just went off the rails. First, I realized that I accidentally deleted a bunch of pics that I took. Second, I dunno, sometimes I just have really bad writing days. As with anything, some days it’s easy, and some days it’s hard. And yesterday it was hard.
By the end of the day, I was already in tears, but then I read kind of a nasty comment from a stranger criticizing pretty much my entire outlook on blogging, and how I exhibit “too much personality” (seriously?).
That pushed me over the edge… I lost my sh*t and started thinking of prison fights and the word, “shank,” as in, “to shank someone.”
LOL! I’m obviously not really going to shank anyone, but I’m just sayin’ — the word occurred to me. 🙂
I’d come unhinged, but I didn’t want to worry El Hub or cry the night away. I just needed a way to vent my feelings.
So, I grabbed my stopwatch, set it for 10 minutes, locked myself in the bathroom and told myself that I could blow my top! — and at the end of the 10 minutes, I would let it go, put it behind me, stop crying, and move on.
In the bathroom, I folded a towel, buried my face in it and cried and yelled and cursed!!
It was very much like that scene from Footloose when Kevin Bacon/Ren is doing gymnastics in the barn and roaring at the universe (“You don’t know me!!”), except much less cardiovascular.
And you know what? It worked. The funny thing is, I yelled myself out after 5 minutes. I didn’t even yell the full 10. I guess just giving myself permission to fall apart went a long way toward helping me feel better.
And if yelling into a towel doesn’t sound like your thing, you could always try writing your feelings down, typing them into a computer, dictating them into your iPhone or voice recorder, and then tearing them up or deleting the files. For me, I think it does help to get rid of it, though, whatever it is, and let it go.
I think we’re always trying to keep our composure in front of our friends and family, you know? Be strong for everyone else. But it sure can be a relief to just go apesh*t from time to time. LOL!
Anywho, just one of the little coping mechanisms I use sometimes and wanted to share. Hope things are going well on your end of the keyboard. Talk to you soon.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

And do you know what keeps bringing me back to your blog? Your personality! Don’t ever change. Ignore the haters. I’m glad you are feeling better.
yelena says
agree times a million! Karen,I READ your blog every day to feel BETTER! when my day is going bad, I just hit my #1 book mark and I can feel a smile coming on just flipping through your pictures (when i don’t have time to read the blog) and when i sit down and read – well that just about ALWAYS puts a big SMILE on my face.
don’t let anyone make u feel like your work is not as great as it is because we sure do appreciate it!
Cassy says
Glad you’re feeling better! And if it helps, I was talking about your blog with my friend and we agreed it’s your personality (and Tabs) that keeps us coming back. I have blogs I like because they’re straight up informative reviews, but seriously who else puts themselves into an entire Archie comic montage? It’s genius if you ask me (and I always assume people want to know my opinion, lol)
Vanessa says
Hi Karen! I’m so sorry you had a bad day yesterday but I’m glad you’re in a better mood today. That stranger must have no personality to say that your blog exudes too much of it. I mean if you didn’t include your personality this would be one boring blog! I think your personality is fantastic and I enjoy coming to your blog daily to see what great and funny things you have to say.
Jamie Lynn Palmer says
Hands down, one of the reasons I love your blog over all others (aside from the fact that we live a stones throw away from each other) is your personal approach to makeup. You write in an openhearted and approachable manner which makes your blog a “must read” in my book. Do not change because of one “trolls” perspective, do what works for you and screw everyone else.
tessa says
Hello,
Long time reader… sometimes commenter.. 🙂
So sorry to hear you had a bad day yesterday! I look at your blog every day and love it. Yours is one of the two I look at frequently. One of the reasons is because I love your style and you make it so much fun! I really enjoy your personality and flare that you add to your reviews. It’s pretty awesome!!!
Hope you have a fantastic day today!

Aww Karen, so sorry to hear that you had a bad day! Don’t let Internet bullying get you down! There is no such thing as too much personality. You show as much as you’re comfortable to, and the people who like you will stay!
Kate says
I agree with the previous comments- the fact that your original, witty and loveable personality shows through is one of the big reasons I love your blog. I’d be surprised if this stranger had done anything as accomplished as this blog, so I say put up or shut up. There is no rule about how to write a blog- it’s a very personal thing and one of the great aspects of this is the fact that there is a great variety of styles available.
sweeks1980 says
I’m so sorry you were having a bad day yesterday! I love your personality (and your blog and your cat), and checking your blog/getting your tweets and Facebook updates are a highlight of my day. Don’t let the haters get you down 🙂

Yesterday I cried mid-downward dog on my yoga mat! I was doing a Jillian video (new to me) and just couldn’t get it. So I stopped, got into downward dog, stared at the floor, and cried. Then I got up, scanned the DVD back and tried again. Kudos for finding a way to let it out that worked for you 🙂 I get how you don’t want to worry your husband or spend all night dwelling on it. For the record, your blog rocks as everyone who comments on this post will attest. We keep reading because your injection of “personality” is just one component of a damn fine piece of art. BLOG ON, GIRL.
Jill says
That nasty stranger deserves to be cut off from the blogosphere! They’re obviously are jealous of you and your fabulous blog, Karen! I love have unique and spirited and funny your writing is – it’s what keeps me coming back every single day. 🙂 MBB has been one of my favourites for 4 years now because I can count on you to deliver the best makeup and beauty news with a little more spunk than most! As they say, “You rock, don’t ever change!” xoxo from Canada
Tracey says
I love your writing, Karen, and I read your blog precisely *for* your personality. You seem like such a smart, warm, funny person, and this comes through in your writing… what’s not to like! After all, it’s easy to find reviews of new products online, but what keeps me coming back to your site is your voice, and the care you take with your writing (and, okay, not gonna lie, the gratuitous Tabs pics).
Halifax says
Somehow you blogging about your frustration made me feel better (as much as it did you). You won’t believe how many of us out there trying to put on a “good” face so that we don’t have to deal with negativity. So thanks for this
Jill says
Typo city, haha.
*They obviously
*I love how unique…
virginie says
Don’t listen to those stupid comments, and people….You are true and this is what we like!
Agata says
Karen, everyone has better and worse days, it’s normal and it’s ok to melt sometimes but as far as that comment someone made about your blog, you shouldn’t care. I know it was hurtful but then read all those comments that your readers leave you and how much we all appreciate what you do. I think the main reason why you’re my favorite blogger is because you are like no one else, you don’t just write about make up, you share personal, creative, funny stories and that’s what makes you so unique and lovable! I hope today you’re feeling better. Sending a lot of positive thoughts and hugs your way!
DJ says
Yours remains my favourite beauty blog because I never know what to expect. You add so much personal flavour and humour that it’s constantly entertaining. Thank you for all you do, and for these little asides as well.
(As an aside, some of that personal flavour regards your lovely city, which I will be visiting for the first time about a month from now. Any beauty or food tips? Go Niners!)
Meghan says
That person obviously has nothing better to do with their life other than just bring people down. I visit your blog everyday because you bring something to the beauty blogosphere that other bloggers don’t. I love your personality in your posts, your silly pictures of Tabs and life in crazy San Francisco. This is YOUR blog, not anybody else’s. I think you always do a fabulous job and have great reviews. Keep it up! You have people who will back you up anytime you need! :]
Kim says
Haters gonna hate. The thing about haters is that when they hate, it is really a reflection of how they feel about themselves. Your blog is top notch and with each post it is clear how much thought, effort and quality you put into your work. Your kindness and positive outlook on life shines through, and I appreciate that you keep it real. In short, your blog rules!
Ruth says
Wow, what a horrible person to say things like that to another; I bet it’s the same type of person who could kick a cat too. I rarely comment but your blog is enjoyed immensly! I think that you’re hilarious and the adventures that Tabs has during his worldwide photo shoots are amazing! The imagination and thought that you put into your postings is unbelievable. I initally found you from MAC’s Wonder Woman launch (again, awesome) and you have become a staple in my day. It’s hard to not let trolls bother you, but do what you can.
Jay @ Wayfaring Beauty says
People are rude! Just let it roll off your back. Your personality helps people relate to you and makes your site standout among a sea of blogs – besides, if people want the bare bone facts without opinions or personality, websites offer cut-and-dry descriptions of their products. Keep up the good work and don’t let the haters bring you down 🙂
Monica P says
Aw, sorry to hear that someone didn’t like your blog .. I mean, really .. why leave a comment? Just move on if you don’t like it (cheez).
I like your blog. When I was first looking for the D&C Monica lipstick, you were the only blog that had good swatches of almost all the colors and I’ve been following ever since.

I hate to say this, but sounds like the hater may be jealous of your success. Your wit, your talent at design and photoshop funny, your light-hearted approach to a sometimes-takes-itself-way-too-seriously beauty industry that sums up the “personality” this hater refers to. and I would like to call it your Talent. your writing and editing Skills- which would be the envy of many a magazine editor, By the Way(I am 100% sure you have your pick of offers but choose to be your own boss-i mean, work for Tabs instead- KUDos to you!). “Personality” is a bit condencending, if you ask me-the success of your blog is due to SO much more than that! Don’t let the haters get you down. There are always going to be jerks who want to tell you that you shouldn’t take your job seriously- I am a Stay-home parent for the past several years, so I have heard it all. Listen to your heart, not the ignorant, jealous mean girls or guys. We love your blog!!!! please don’t change a thing!
Cindy (Prime Beauty) says
There, there Karen. We’ve all had days like that–mine was Monday 🙂 The more successful you are the more haters there will be. Personally, I can’t wait until I get me a whole lotta haters and then I can say I really made it! :0 Seriously though, if that critism held true, you would not be the top beauty blog on the internet. It’s your personality that MAKES your blog different from all the rest. So there hater, don’t read it if you don’t like it!
Mandy says
…and this i why i LOVE you and your blog! You go girl! Today is a brand new day and you can leave yesterday behind 🙂
Tina @ My Highest Self says
Sorry to read you had a bad day! I’ll never understand people who comment to criticize. If you don’t like what you’re reading MOVE ALONG. I’m pretty sure you know you have a huge audience of people who enjoy your writing style, personality, photography and all that comes with it! Keep on keepin’ on :).

Your blog is the bomb dot com! Your sunny disposition, funny cat pictures and craziness help to brighten my day. When irritating people get on my nerves I take it to my exercise routine. I kick them up the butt, punch them in the big mouth and ride my exercise bike like Zombies are after me! Lol
Lauren Sutherland says
Your personality is what makes this my favorite blog. You make me laugh and smile everytime I read it. Sure, some blogs may do more mass reviews of products, but I don’t want to read those ones. Your reviews are the ones that are funny, enthusiastic, honest when a product isn’t that great without being cruel, and encouraging. Never ever change Karen! Plus you love my horse Sunny (Buxom Contest) and that makes you even more special to me!
Crystal says
There is no such thing as too much personality. I relate to you more than almost anyone else I follow. I don’t get why people feel the need to throw their opinions out there with abandon. There are so many people sitting behind their computers with no home training (yes thats what my mama calls it!) and if it aint for you I say move along girl and take your catty shady comments with you!
I love your blog like a very chubby 2 year old that’s all grown up (sorta) loves cake! Do your thing girl:)
Ruth says
yummm….cake…
Nicky says
I really enjoy your blog! I read it everyday actually..keep up the awesome work!!
Patty says
I can almost guarantee that the person who left you that nasty feedback does not have a blog of their own, just feels that they can tell others what’s wrong with theirs. It takes a LOT of courage to put yourself out there in any form, but especially in a blog form. Please focus on all of the people who appreciate what you do, in the exact way you do it, rather than on this one person who radiates ugliness from the inside out. Keep doing you, girl. We’re all behind you.
Maria says
Did you say “skank”? LOL just kidding; but I wouldn’t blame you if you did! As my husband so annoyingly says ALL the time, “haters gone hate, taters gone potate”. I have no idea what it means but it makes me laugh. I love your blog. Sometimes I wonder if I’m reading a cat lady blog and I do that about halfway through a Tabs story and I love that! Keep doing your thing! If that “reader” doesn’t like it, they can go to another blog that they do like right?
Cassy says
Haha, I have no idea what this means either, but it is amazing!
Madie says
Okay, allow me to be honest with you. The first time i *accidentally* visited your blog i was kinda think that way too.. But as we know that sometimes first judgement can be wrong..
Now, i am addicted to your blog! I read it everyday… I also read several blogs..but then i realized that your blog is different..your writing style, how you put your imaginations into your everyday postings that keeps me coming back. You are not afraid to express yourself, the way that not everyone can do. Just stay the way you are! You are amazing!
Barbara says
I have been reading your blog for a couple years now and love your personality! (Not a cat lady either!) Last fall I read an article about beauty blogs and subscribed to four new ones. Guess what? I have deleted all four because they were uninteresting to me, but yours is still in my inbox daily because I look forward to reading it!
Christina says
I’m so sorry yesterday didn’t treat you so well, Karen 🙁 I want you to know that the reason why I love your blog so much and why I keep coming back is BECAUSE you share so much of your personality! I feel like I’ve really been able to get to know you over the years and your blog is like a friend to me. You and your blogging style are absolutely inspirational and don’t you ever forget it! 🙂
Luciana Lima says
Hey Karen! Greetings from Brazil! I´ll just add up to all the comments above. Your blog is awesome and you are a fantastic human being. I relate to you in so many ways you wouldn´t believe it. This weekend I was feeling like absolute sh*t. I turned on my computer to get distracted and ended up at your blog, and then realized I was talking to you, and remembering that time you took a break because you weren´t feeling so good. You helped me, and help a lot of other people. I kinda feel bad when I don´t have the time to read what you write because your text always makes me laugh or smile, good thing your pictures are great to. Thans a lot!
Rachelle Simmons says
OMG I love your blog so much. I have been reading it for a couple years now and I really look forward to it each day. You brighten up my day. I agree, I think the person who wrote the nasty comment is just jealous of you, what else could it be, seriously. I have read other blogs and yours is the best one out there as far as I’m concerned!
Ruchita says
Sorry you had a rough day yesterday! Yours is one of my favorite beauty blogs and I think your happy, upbeat personality is great. I like the idea of yelling into a towel. It’s good to vent, in some way, to get those negative emotions out. Hopefully today is better for you!
Lisa S. says
The internet makes bullies out of people who feel secretly powerless.
And the worst part is they disguise the bullying behavior as “constructive criticism”.
Rock on Karen! You have an awesome blog AND personality and that shines through and makes what you write golden!
varsha says
Karen..havent wrote to you in a while..hope you are feeling better now..your personality is an inspiration, you should know and dont let the haters drag you down..you know what you need?a pleasant break and extra cuddle time with Tabby boy ..hugs to you! 🙂
Tara says
I’ll bet that comment was coming from someone who was having a bad day and they wanted to share the wealth with you. Keep doing what you do, you do it so well! I can also attest that yelling gets it out. I was ready to hose my neighbors dog’s because of hours of non stop barking. Instead I stood on something and yelled at them while they barked at me. I know I looked like a crazy lady, but it made me feel better and the doggies stayed dry!
AmandaM says
Karen, I haven’t commented in a while, but I have to in this case. I’m sorry you had a bad day yesterday, and about the negative comment, but don’t let it bring you down. You have one of the best beauty (and life) blogs out there! I read religiously, and I love your personality! Your inner (and outer) beauty shine…so you go girl!! The negative comment has nothing to do with you and everything to do with the person who left it. In the end, the only person you can be is yourself…and I, for one, like you just how you are! Hope you’re having a better day today, hugs!
Radhika says
Toooo much personality????!!! There can never be “too much” of you or Tabs on MBB..I love you both (okay, maybe, I do love Tabs a teeeeny tiny bit more) 😀 😀
“haters gone hate, taters gone potate†okay..I am soooooooo going to chant this for at least another month..or year..:D 😀
Maria says
It is catchy isn’t it…
Radhika says
Verrrry! 😀
Rosa says
Hi Karen, So sorry you had a bad day 🙁 but I’m glad things are better. I think you are awesome and don’t change a thing!! Yours was the very first beauty blog I found and started following daily. I now read several beauty blogs but yours is still my favorite! Thanks for doing what you do!! 🙂
Susan says
I just started reading your blog last year, and I come back daily because: You love and feature your cat :), have GREAT product/swatch pictures, and keep me entertained with your quirky, open, honest and sometimes unexpected musing. Your personality is why people read your blog. You connect with your readers. You should be very proud of this blog – don’t let anyone rain on your parade!
ReneeP says
I am going to agree with everyone! I think your personality is so fun. I am going through a very hard time with a debilitating chronic illness and, I swear, you keep me laughing! In a good way! You keep it up, girl! I would be a little more miserable of a person without your blog!!
Julia says
I love your blog. You make beauty and makeup fun. I can’t tell you how many times you’ve cheered me up. And I look forward to Sundays and glimpses into Tabs’ glamorous modeling life.
Camille says
oh, bad days. i’m glad you got to vent out the anger and frustration. 🙂 and poo to the person who criticized you for having too much personality in your blog. YOUR PERSONALITY IS WHAT MAKES THIS BLOG SO AWESOME! who wants to follow a dry, lifeless blog for a while?! keep on, sister girl! you have devoted followers for a reason 🙂
kimmwc03 says
Ignore the haters. You have an excellent blog. I love that you put personality into your posts.
Barb says
Really?!?!? Your personality and pics of Tabs’ furry belly are why I love your blog! Don’t change a thing! People can be such idiots sometimes. It amazes me on a daily basis.
Keep up the great work 🙂

Karen, like many of us, I read your blog because of your personality. Thank you for introducing us to new products in such a fun way! Ignore the crazy people…
Appu says
Since when did having a personality become a bad thing??! This person’s utterly jobless.. leaving a mean comment sitting behind a computer screen is SO easy. LOVE your blog, you are an amazing person!
Miranda says
Hi Karen,
I think if more people allowed themselves to fall apart every now and then we would all be able to cope with this world better. The main thing is to cry, yell and talk to my teddy bear for a few minutes then MOVE ON !! Good job!!! I also want to let you know that the personality thing IS the reason I LOVE your blog and I visit several times a day (cause your pictures are amazing too!)
Love to you and keep up the great work!!!
Alyssa says
I totally love your blog! I live vicariously through you and your amazing beauty sense! I am a stay at home mom, and I love it but I definitely don’t have as many excuses to dress up and play with all of my makeup anymore. You get to do it everyday and that must be amazing! I love your personality and your blog! Keep at it!!
Jax says
Trolling morons are not worth your time or energy (easy to say I know)
There are obviously loads of us that love your Blog and to reiterate what others have said, your personality is part of what brings me back, I love hearing what you think about products and news of releases, My Kittehs love reading what Tabs is up to (as do I) and the humour and fun you bring to it all helps you stand apart from many other blogs.
Colleen says
I love your personality Karen:) Your blog is awesome & I look forward to checking it out everyday. Don’t let the haters get to you!

Maybe this is what I should have done last night too. Being a strong woman is sometimes so hard. My coping skill was a bath, Enya and other classical music to try to push it out of my mind. And it’s good that your blog has personality 🙂

Hi Karen! I don’t always comment, but I read your blog everyday. It always makes me smile, so just remember there’s people out there that love what you do!

What ^they^ said. There are lots of makeup blogs. And some of them are tougher graders. But there’s only one MBB!

I’m one of the many MBB fans that also read your blog DAILY largely in part of your personality. I feel like I’m reading about a friend I’ve never met and that just so happens to love makeup. 😉 For every one hater that dampens your spirit, know that you have a thousand of beauty addicts that love ya! Keep your head up and do what you do! <3

Hi Karen! I’ve been reading your blog for a couple of years now. I thought this would be a good time to tell you I love your blog, the way you write, your personality, and YOU! I’m 16 now, and I stumbled upon your website back when I began experimenting with makeup. I barely even wear or buy makeup anymore, but I read your blog daily. Your positive outlook on life has cheered me up during my angsty teenage years. Never stop doing what you do!
Lots of love from Texas <3

Just wanted to continue the stream of positive feedback you’re getting!
Sometimes there are indeed bad days — but don’t ever listen to strangers who hate 🙂 It’s just ALWAYS bad news.
I regularly come to your blog (okay, daily) and while I am a confessed beauty addict and a dog lady, only your blog makes me actually laugh out loud (nod to Tabs). Also, you’re always so positive and personal that it often feels like I’m checking into the blog of a friend. Anyway, kudos to you lady for raising the beauty blogging bar (and as an aside to that mean stranger: HELLO?! beauty is more than just makeup)
I love your idea of screaming into a towel with a set timer — I’m definitely going to try that one during one of my bad days. Adding to this, I suggest after going apes**t cooking something for yourself or buying one thing to continue making yourself feel better! Because if we can’t make ourselves feel better, no one can. Rock on, woman.
JCz says
“….except much less cardiovascular” LOL! That’s gonna to be my new credo.
Too much personality? Wha…..?!!? I read an article on blogging and dealing with nasty commenters (among other things). The article was on xojane.com and was written by Lisa Lampinelli. If you don’t know her she’s a comedienne dubbed the “queen of mean” (http://www.xojane.com/entertainment/lisa-lampanelli-drops-the-persona-and-for-the-first-time-gets-really-real-about-internet-commenters). Really raunchy but very funny. I’d have thought that she’d have skin like elephant hide but she says that she never reads comments about her writing or her shows because if it’s good she’ll get a big ego and she’s not going to change the way she writes or does comedy over a few negative comments. Philosophically I know there’s a difference between someone’s stage and “real” personas, but I was surprised to see that someone like her gets a bit down from the opinions of others.
I’m glad the towel-in-the-bathroom worked for you! And remember that it doesn’t take a very big set of brass ones to write trash about other people on the interwebz. Under the cloak of anonymity everyone’s a gd critic!
Megan says
I’ve never understood comments like that on blogs. If you don’t like something just don’t read it. How hard is that? As many others have said your personality is part of why I read your blog. If I was only looking for factual reviews I would probably stick more to blogs where the swatches are on a skintone similar to my own casper-like one:)
Halley says
You are the reason for my M.A.C. addiction (it’s a good thing). I love how you explain new and old products while showing how to wear them. I feel better about my makeup purchases cause I know Karen recommended them. I hate critics but hopefully the stranger had something constructive to say…otherwise he’s a nasty gnarly troll!
mkdallas says
Gotta weigh in and agree with everyone else, Karen…I have your blog delivered to my inbox daily and ALWAYS look forward to reading it! Yours is unique within the blogosphere because of your personalization; I love reading about Tabs, El Hub and all the charming comments and photos that include your food, your family, the weather and the places you love. Please don’t let some dipshit douche cause you to doubt yourself; the internet is a perfect venue for hateful people to put down others without reprisal. Keep calm, carry on and know that you have many, many fans out here who think you’re the bomb diggity!
Erin says
Karen, you are so incredibly awesome. I really hate that some joyless harpy contributed to your bad day. You don’t deserve that kind of garbage, and maybe if that person is so averse to kickass, fun personalities, he or she can GTFO instead of hanging around and trying to tear others down. That’s my two cents!
Anyway, I know we’ve never met, so I figure it’s probably weird to say it, but I totally love you and wish we could be best friends! Anybody can snap a picture or two of a lipstick and write a few dry words about texture/quality/whatever, but it takes someone pretty darn special to do what you do. Every time I read one of your posts, whether it’s about makeup or cutie-pie Tabs or anything at all, I feel like I’m going on a big, glamorous adventure with my best girlfriend, the kind I know is going to make my face hurt from laughing and smiling too much. You make everything so fun and I just love you so much.
You keep doing what you’re doing! We all love you and have your back!
mary says
OMG! I agree with everyone else’s comments. I only read 2 blogs, yours and a garden one. I don’t have time for any others. Do not change! Which is why I love you and ‘savor’ your latest, to wait until I can read all of it. Love the furbutt sidekick too. LOL all of the time…after a stressful 8+ hr day you make me feel happy! love m

We all come here BECAUSE of your personality! What a maroon for saying something like that. Go find one of those blogs that just posts press releases then and LEAVE OUR KAREN ALONE haha!
Glad you feel better! We love you!

Must try the towel thing. So your neighbors (and husband in same house) really heard nothing at all? Hmmm…
Sorry about that idle critic. Don’t worry about that kind of thing. Keep up the interesting blogging and writing.
Rose says
Karen, so sorry you had a bad day! Your personality is the reason why I check your blog several times a day! It’s my way of taking a break from the day and indulge in cats and makeup! Ignore the commenter, too much hate in the world!
Smeegal9 says
Karen you should never let anyone’s negative comments about your blog affect you for more than 2 seconds (can’t lie and say just ignore because we are all a little sensitive), but you have one of the best blogs in the virtual world! Poop on that girl! you keep on doing you.
Heidi says
Well, I think the outpouring of love and positivity in these comments speaks for itself! It’s definitely better to be yourself and face the possibility of people not “getting it” than to waste your energy trying to please everyone and be something you’re not. It’s a tough thing to learn, Lord knows I work at it every day! Keep on being you, Karen, you’re the only one that can do it!

So sorry you had a bad night last night. It’s good to just vent sometimes. I love your blog for so many reasons and your personality is on top of that list. i always look forward to reading your blog on a daily basis. keep up the great work and don’t let some of these thoughtless comments bring you down.
Anna says
Your personality is one of your greatest attributes, don’t let some rando-person tear it down =) The rest of us keep coming back for daily doses of your awesome photographs and tips and tricks and whatnot!! Seriously, who else would put themselves into Archie’s comics? You’re amazing.
Katherine G says
Glad you are feeling better 🙂 You are amazing, and I’m grateful that you share your life with us. Exercise has become my outlet. Martial arts has made me much more calm ironically, and when work isn’t hellish like it is this week, I practice it pretty regularly. My biggest issue lately has been finding out that people I thought were good people really aren’t. I spent hours listening to this one person’s constant issues with everything and then it’s like she disappeared. I was always the one to keep in contact and see if she was ok, but she’s proven to me that she is not a good friend and I’d even say not a good person after enough interactions with her to judge this. My problem is that I care about everyone and want to see the best from them, and I get upset when I’ve put a lot of time into someone but they don’t even care enough to be civil. That’s my venting for today. You are an amazing person, and it’s humbling to see that you go through bad moments, too.
Bridget says
Psssh! I always thought a major touchstone of blogging was to inject your personality into what you write! I’ve been a loyal reader for the past three years, and I think you do an amazing job of balancing helpful advice and reviews with fun, creative, humorous copy. Please, keep up the good work and try not to take comments like that to heart.
Krisabelle says
I think the simple fact that everyone here loves you and your blog to the point where they’d like to pimp slap the person who dumped on you should serve as proof that you are doing a lot of things right! 🙂 Your blog is one of the best out there and a HUGE part of that is because of your personality. Forget that arseclown! Jeremy Renner and Christopher Meloni will kick some ass if need be.
Selena says
I’m totally with you, some days I just feel awful until I get to break something–screaming into a pillow is probably a much better alternative. Glad to hear you are strong enough to put it all behind you. I love the blog and I’m a daily reader! Keep it up! 🙂
Jill says
Awww sorry you had a cruddy day 🙁 hugs and <3
Lisa says
They should go read some other blog, then. 🙂
Christine says
I have no personality and therefore appreciate someone like you who does have personality! Your blog is one of the few things that can make me de-stress after a long day at work. Don’t change a thing!!
Danielle says
Reading your beauty blog always makes me happy. Thank you for all the hard work and personality(!) you put into it. You have so many fans, please don’t let one hater ruin your day. Sending lots of love and positivity to you and Tabs. <3
Lydia says
Karen, I’ve been reading your blog for a couple of months now, but I was always a lurker…and then I read what you wrote about that ridiculous comment from the stranger and I was like OH HAAAAIL NAAAAW! Your blog is the only beauty blog I read consistently and it’s lovely precisely because of your personality. You treat your readers like close friends and visiting your blog can even be therapeutic at times! From your tiny corner of the universe, you give so many people joy. Never forget that! Here’s to hoping you have a much better day tomorrow 🙂
BooBooNinja says
*Hug* Oh, Karen. I’m so glad you stick with this. Your personality and openness are what draw me to this blog. Thank you for your candor and spirit. I’m glad Tabs and your Stuffie could give you love in your time of need. (I tried doing that with my own pair, but the kittie just (softly) bit me!)
christine says
Your “personality” is what keeps me coming to your blog throughout the day! I love to read about new collections and reviews but I find that your humor and creativity is what sets you apart! I have purchased many products from your recommendations as well as made the bean burrito with enchilada sauce from Trader Joes. Like Tupac says, keep your head up!!!
Anne says
Karen, sorry about your bad day… Your blog is the ONLY blog that I have to read very night before I go to bed otherwise its an incomplete day. I just had a funeral in the family and immediately I turned to your blog for something to brighten me up. Take care and ignore those haters. They are just jealous of all your loving fans
Stef Smith says
AMEN! Sometimes a good scream/cry fest is exactly what is needed! Forget about the haters, easier said than done, but I want you to know that I religiously check your blog every day because you update so much and I looooooove how you blog! I love how well you explain everything, you’ve taught me more about makeup in the couple of years I’ve followed you, than I learned in the 30+ years I was alive before that! 🙂
Ps. How big of a bed do you have, if you have to share with a Husband and Tabs??? LOL!
tami says
I’ve been a makeup artist for a bit now but found myself @ the MAC counter today trying new things & wondering what Karen would say. Your blog is the only one I read daily. It is your style & expertise that I enjo so much!
Saby says
Karen you have a great personality, and you show no signs of dumbness or superficiality, that’s why i keep coming back here, and that’s why your blog is number 1 as far as I know. Don’t worry ! I’m sending you lots of love from Romania
Alice says
Karen, as so many girls (and guys?) have written before me, I LOVE your personality! It is what keeps me coming here and read ALL of your posts from start to end, whether they are about makeup or Tabs or anything else, really. Your is the only beauty blog I read daily.
We readers know how much work you put into this blog, and it really shows, in the photography, in your writing, and MOST OF ALL in the personality you infuse in every post and picture. That is what makes it all unique and keeps us visiting, every day.
I like you, and your blog, and Tabs, and please never stop being yourself!
Astrid says
Hang in there, Karen. You are an awesome person and I truly love your blog. Been following it for years exactly because of your personality :). Btw, this thing actually reminded me of this comic at the Oatmeal: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/making_things
Guess it’s a problem for anyone working creatively and sharing their stuff on the internet ;).
Much love and good mojos!
Astrid
Anneri says
“Too much personality”?! Most stupidest comment I ever heard. You know what me makes read your blog every day? Your personality. (And Tabs’ personality of course.)
I’ve lately feeling I see the samey posts on too much blogs, yours is a refreshing change!
Never loose that too much personality, girl!!!
Elinor says
We love you. Your blog is awesome, I read it every day. It is beautiful and funny and touching. Ignore this evil troll.
Allison says
Karen, hang it there! I love everything about your style and your blog. You ROCK! I’m fairly new to your site but totally addicted!!! Your fans LOVE you!!!!!!!! Thanks for all you do and share!!!!!
Erin says
Karen, you have been my number 1 favorite blogger since I started reading blogs! I LOVE your personality, we are friends in my head. That stranger can go shove it. Seriously, I hope they’re reading all the comments that say how much they love your style of posting. I wish my own blog could be more like yours.
In other thoughts, I HATE how it seems like all negative comments about blogs are from “anonymous” strangers. Cool, glad you feel the need to anonymously criticize someone’s hard work.
CynthiaCC says
Okay, here’s a story. I was wearing Evo Revo gloss the other day, and a colleague asked me about it, because I was reapplying in the ladies room. Yeah, I responded without even thinking, isn’t it a cool color? My friend Karen designed it! Which is funny, because we’ve never even met, but I love your blog so much precisely because you put so much of YOU into it. MBB isn’t just informative, it’s welcoming. I love that. Yours is the only beauty blog I follow regularly anymore. Don’t change a thing.
Kim says
This actually made me very angry. I understand that people are entitled to their own opinions but, too often, they thoughtlessly criticize others (especially on the internet). It’s easy to say “don’t let that stuff bother you”, but I just wanted to let you know that *I* am bothered for you. Not only do I think it was very rude of the stranger, I also think that he/she is totally wrong. Maybe I’m not the majority, but I read your blog – one of very, very few that I read regularly and the only one I comment on – because of your personality. I even developed a (not really very large) interest in makeup based on your recs. But you could be writing about anything and I’d still be reading. That’s the truth. I hope you keep blogging just the way you are now, as long as you’re happy doing it. If others don’t like it, Eff them. Sorry, I mean, they don’t have to read. 🙂 You hang in there – you always make me smile or laugh and I hope you never change! <3
Ada says
What is that person talking about though? I keep coming back for your spunk and personality. Please ignore what they said – and take it as a sourpuss who needs to grow up. I love your blog – and I like your style.
Nina says
Karen,
I want you to print out these responses and read them any time you question what you are doing. Feel the very really love, hugs, and appreciation from all of us who value you. Be reminded what a great writer you are, and what a gift you have in expressing yourself. Persevere when you feel the creative well is dry, because when you are feeling the worst is probably when you’ll write a great post like this one. KNOW how funny, beautiful and talented you are, and of what high quality your blog is. The pictures, the reviews, the personal anecdotes, the real life, and the real you….make it one of THE most necessary blogs to read every day by us beautyphiles. Push on, girl! XOXO
Janet says
Boo hiss to the haters! I love your blog BECAUSE it’s got so much personality! I know it’s a REAL person writing it, not a team of automatons or something.
XOXO,
A fellow cat lady
Linda says
Illegitimi non carborundum, Karen! This cat lady comes back to your blog BECAUSE of your personality. (Why would I want to read a blog where the writer’s personality doesn’t come across?)
Annie says
The makeup reviews and Tabs are great and all…But let’s be real, your big ol’ personality is the reason mbb is bookmarked on my browser bar!
Silka says
Karen it is your personality that makes you shine bright in the blogsphere! Don’t pay attention to the nasty comments…. It’s pure envy! Cheers to you and Tabs.
Diane says
This is just completely ridiculous comment. Haters gonna hate, right? Gee whiz. Yours is my favorite makeup blog *because* of your personality, if anything I find others who are too cold or clinical. Yours is the perfect mix of personal commentary, reviews on products, and of course, Tabs. (Fellow crazy cat lady, here!)
Mei says
Oh Karen. You are such an amazing woman. You inspire me every time I read your blog. My beauty and makeup journey has propelled because of you! And I’ve gotten so much compliments with what I’ve learned from you! You gave me confidence as an Asian woman to express who myself with makeup.
Thank you so much for being you Karen. Please keep it up!
Stacey says
I am loving your blog, you have am awesome personality. You make me laugh while talking about my favorite things. Not just a boring beauty blog, it’s special. Please don’t stop what your doing and don’t change.
Chryztyne says
Oh, Karen. YOU are my inspiration for beauty blogging. I love that you put so much effort and personality into every post. These many comments should keep you goin’ versus that one lousy comment. Cheers to you!!
P.S. Everyone have their bad moments. I had mine just last night, too. 😛
Steph says
Your personality is the best thing about this blog. 🙂
mully says
Karen, I feel you…we’ve all had days like this when everything just seems to be going downhill. Hang in there. And, btw, thanks for the tip. This might come in handy someday (I do hope not in the near future, though. Hehe!) What I like about you is your personality, the fact that we both appreciate anything about the ’80s, we have almost the same skin tone and Tabs (I don’t have any cats, though I do have 6 dogs). You have a lot of people who loves you and we’re all behind you, so don’t mind them haters. :))
