Sometimes I feel like a disorganized mess, especially when it comes to my makeup. I think some of it has to do with the process I like to use when I plan my looks in the mornings, how I like to set products out on the bathroom counter, contemplate each one, feel around through different eyeshadows and lipglosses until a combination strikes my fancy.
But some of it has to do with makeup storage choices. If you’re like me and struggle to stay organized, here are a few simple makeup storage ideas.

“The quest to rein in my makeup continues. At some point, I fear I’ll end up like those peeps you see on 60 Minutes who’ve trapped themselves in their homes behind stacks of boxes and crap. They end up living like sardines in a tin can. I’ve told myself I can’t get my Christmas tree until I clear out the corner where most of the makeup is sitting, boo hoo.” - Take Back Your Sanity! Lipstick Storage Only $1.79 Away
“Try as I might, I can’t avoid the siren call of The Container Store. Sure, it irks me that a store can survive on the premise of selling you new crap to store all your present crap, but desperate times call for desperate measures!” - Looking for Cheap, Stylish Ways to Organize Your Makeup?
“Your local art store may have just the thing you need to keep your growing makeup stash organized. Most arts and crafts stores stock unvarnished wooden boxes in assorted shapes and sizes. They make perfect (and affordable) makeup storage containers. I spied these boxes, each ranging from a whopping $1.50 to a staggering $3, at my local Ben Franklin Craft Store this afternoon. They’re perfect for storing eye shadows, blushes, glosses or whatever your makeup-lurving heart desires.” - Makeup Storage Solution Idea #1, Sears Craftsman
“For the past few months I’ve been storing stuff in Sterilite plastic craft drawers located in different rooms at home. I like that the drawers are cheap and easy to clean, but I’d still like to be able to keep it all in one central place. I was cruising Sears a few weeks ago, ’cause I had to buy some vacuum bags, and found a possible solution to the ever-increasing makeup madness: a Craftsman rolling tool chest! It’s tall, has several long, shallow drawers (perfect for eye shadow pans and palettes) and has enough storage room to hold everything.” - Makeup Storage for Traveling and Vacation; Makeup and Beauty Blog’s Travel Makeup List
“Ziplocs aren’t sexy, I know. I go on trips a few times a year, and at the airport I always see at least one cute girl hauling a sleek, heavy-looking train case full of makeup to her gate — and I’m always glad it’s not me.”
How do you store your makeup? 🙂

I was wondering how much makeup you have in order to get the Craftsman. Until you find something better, the Craftsman is one buck ugly storage solution 🙂 I think Pursebuzz uses the cart she bought from Costco. My makeup stash is too small for a Craftsman though, it needs time and lots of money to grow.

I have one of those clear Sterilite cart-with-drawers-thingies from Target. I don’t love it, but the five drawers fit most of my eye makeup, blushes, lip products, and perfumes, so I guess I can’t complain. I also have a smaller version of it for my more ‘everyday’ makeup and brushes, but I still have issues with being able to find certain colors/products quickly without flipping everything over. Ugh. 😉
Have a great weekend Karen!!

I really wish someone comes with cute storage solutions for makeup exclusively. I almost know all the pieces at Container store having gone there again and again in search of cute drawers but all I get all the yucky white plastic thingies. I hate having them in my house, but have no other go 🙁

That is so hilarious because I saw those at Michael’s and thought they were cute but was like, hmmm, what would I use them for? I would need a virtual graveyard to store all my lipstick in them! 🙂

I currently use a shoe bag, similar to this:
http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?searchId=16495797&itemIndex=8&CATID=62195&PRODID=59766
It holds my makeup and hair products. It works out okay for now, but I need to reorganize it (specifically, removing hair products that aren’t in regular rotation) so that I can spread out the makeup more.

If I keep it up, I may have to get a storage shed for all my makeup lol!
J-Money says
Is that a vampire coffin holding that lipstick? ha ha ha ha. I always keep my everyday stuff on my bathroom counter which is foundation, brown eyeliner, my eyelash curler, mascara, liquid blush, and tinted lip gloss. Everything else gets stored in my very heavy duty travel makeup train case I bought from Sephora which sits right underneath. That way if I want something outside of the norm, I just bend down and lift the various trays. Anything else is either thrown away or kept in a hatbox underneath the sink.

My collection has not gotten to the stage where it needs storage (:(still using makeup pouches) But I am definately taking note of the suggestions *wink* do you see where I am headed ?

Hi Dao,
Isn’t it though? I still want one. Too bad El Hub refuses to budge … and too bad it would NOT go with my Pottery Barn wanna-be vibe.
Girl, your Craftman status is bound to happen soon. Makeup is like eating Pringles. Once you start, you CAN’T STOP!!!!

Hi Elle,
Yeah, I have a few three drawer ones that I got from Joanne on sale a few months ago. They work, although I wish they were cuter.
You have a great weekend too! Got any plans?
Karen says
Hi Indian Girl,
I hear you. I have a bunch of plastic thingys and while they aren’t the cutest they do the job.
I’ve actually resorted to storing stuff in clear shoe boxes. NOT CUTE AT ALL, but they hold lots of stuff and I can see through them. Plus, they’re only like $1.50 each. 🙂

Hi Vampy Varnish,
Right? I’d only take mine out when the moon was full, LOL.
Karen says
Hi Crystal G.,
I’ve seen that used for organizing other items, too, like charge cords for tech items. That’s a good idea to use it to organize products.

Hi Tami,
HA! I want a whole room just for my makeup. It would be fab if I could keep it a certain temperature and get custom lighting in there too…
Karen says
Hi J-Money,
Yes, my vampire obsessed friend, that would be a vampire coffin.
You are so streamlined. When I go to your house I’m so snooping through your makeup case.
Karen says
Hi Kerry,
Girl, I know where that train is headed ! 😉 You’ll be looking for some Steralite drawers… and then next thing you know you’ll be wanting the Craftsman.

Hey Karen!
It’s gonna be a quiet weekend–got a lot of cleaning and errands and clothes-rotating to do (hello sweaters!), so not too much! I’m also trying to pick through some of the new things on the MAC website–I’ve never tried the mineralized skinfinishes and I’m kind of curious, but nothing else out of the new collections are really jumping out at me so far. What about you, any fun plans?

Hi Karen-
I store my MU in two Sephora Midnight Traincases. They are sooo worth it. I also keep my pigment samples and random samples in a tupperware container.

I store my makeup in a large jewelry chest that matches my vanity. It works great, I have separate drawers for eyeshadow, lip stuff, blushes, and liners & mascaras. Plus there’s a deeper drawer at the bottom for things like my MAC pigments which just seem to clutter. It’s about as big as, but much prettier then, a tool chest.
Hillary says
Hey Karen,
I don’t think I have nearly as much makeup as you (what with my relative lack of creativity), so my solution may not provide you with enough storage. I bought some cute wicker silverware organizers and put them in my large vanity drawer. I keep different things in different sections. I like it because everything is neatly organized, out of sight, and easily accessible when I sit down to do my makeup each morning.

Karen these are great suggestions. I have a house full of girls! Do you have a lock and key suggestion? The kids are always ruining my best and favorite colors.

I’m slow on the ball on chiming in, but this is what I use and I love it! I use trays on the inside to keep things in place:

Hi,
This is just an out loud thought, why don’t you break down and buy the Alex drawer system at Idea? They would look so much better than a tool box organizer and they are designed for women. All of the makeup YouTube guru’s have them and they seem to work very well for them. Many use plastic or acrylic organizers inside of them as you have mentioned. I know they aren’t cheap but if you’re having this much trouble it really sounds like the best solution. that way you could have all in one room. they even fit in closets. some are wider than they are taller, etc. Just a suggestion:)
