Sundays with Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 76

February 28th, 2010 by Karen 39 Comments

Gah! I can’t believe it’s almost Monday, ladies. I love the weekends because I get to spend quality time with my two favorite boys, but tomorrow El Hub goes back to work, and Tabs leaves for a big photo shoot in Spain. With the new spring and summer collections coming out, he’s been getting hired for more and more gigs.

As a matter of fact, here are some of the projects he’s worked on lately. 🙂

What Were Your Best and Worst Beauty Experiences of the Week?

February 28th, 2010 by Karen 58 Comments

MY BEST:

Couple of good ones this week, which is great because they offset the doozies I have for the “Worst” list below… I’ve had a series of really good hair days, and the pimples on my chin are in full retreat, huzzah!

MY WORST:

I haven’t been taking care of my feet, and now the skin on the tops of my tootsies resembles worn leather. 🙁 Most of the last polish I used has chipped away, and even my cuticles look like shredded carrots. I plan to rectify the situation tonight. Also, I haven’t been having good luck with mascara lately — ya know, when you finish your eye makeup, blink and get mascara all over the place? That’s SO ANNOYING!

What were your best and worst beauty experiences of the week? Please share yours in the comments.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Beauty Snacks: Sites of the Day

February 28th, 2010 by Karen 11 Comments

California winter oak

Happy Sunday, ladies. 🙂 How did you sleep? Tabs just took me for my morning walk, and now I’m trying to decide what to wear later today when we meet some friends visiting from out of town. Part of me wants to wear my new green dress, but the lazy part of me says just go with jeans and layers.

The lazy part of me almost always wins, LOL!

What are your plans today? I hope they involve a little fun.

Refinery29 — 2010 Fashion and Shopping

This week Refinery29 jets to the top of a loooong list of destinations for discovering emerging trends from the runways to the streets, with up-to-the-minute insider reports on designers, cool global street styles, breaking fashion news, sample sales, boutique openings and local shopping reports from readers in different cities around the world. The goods? How about features like How To Wear The Completely Buttoned-Up Shirt, Hair Trend: Go Rainbow Bright With Colorful DIY Streaks and Lighten Up With 20+ Spring Jackets?

Sugarpill

Brighten up your day with a visit to Sugarpill Cosmetics. I’m dying to try their line of vibrant, richly pigmented, velvety pressed eyeshadows and sparkling loose powders. I like the whole vibe they’ve got going on (they even ship internationally), and it doesn’t hurt that they like cats. 😉

garance doré

Perhaps the fashion world’s most closely followed blogger, Garance Doré makes/breaks trends and can elevate up-and-coming designers to superstar status with a single post. Her blend of portrait photography, illustrations (my FAVORITES), collages, and stream-of-consciousness writing generates more than 50,000 visits/day.

Modelinia

Modelinia sees the world through supermodel eyes, which is to say it’s a unique point of view. While they don’t all look like the everyday woman, these girls give some really good information on fashion, beauty and lifestyle to, as they put it, “help our audience gain the style confidence to look and feel their best.”

Decompressing with the Cargo Pro Picks Collection

February 27th, 2010 by Karen 22 Comments

Hi, ladies. How’s it going tonight? Today was … rough, for lack of a better term. I wasn’t really in the mood for hard core makeup, but I did spend a few minutes with Cargo’s Pro Picks Collection ($39, coming soon to Ulta), a new kit with four full-size Cargo products hand-picked by pro makeup artists.

The price is why it got my attention. Cargo’s kits are usually pretty good deals (check out their 7 by 7 Mini Kit, also $39), and this one’s no exception. Purchased separately, the four Pro Picks pieces would cost a whopping $86.

Cargo Pro Picks

With the kit you get the Los Angeles Cargo Color Palette, the Reverse Lip Liner in Flesh Tone 02 (a creamy medium/fair peach), a Blu_Ray Mascara in Black and their Classic Lip Gloss in Tobago (a sheer, shimmery melon). I didn’t find the official launch date, but I’ll let you know when I do.

A Slightly Nervous Makeup and Beauty Blogger

February 27th, 2010 by Karen 31 Comments

What it do, ladies? Right now Tabs, El Hub and I are watching the news and waiting to find out if a tsunami will hit Hawaii (ETA soon).

Yes, that felt about as strange to type as it probably was to read.

Doing my best not to worry, but I am a little nervous… I’m browsing the web to keep my mind occupied. Care to keep me company?

UPDATE 2:32PM PST: It looks like Hawaii has been lucky so far. The first waves generated by the earthquake have passed through the Hawaiian Islands with no signs of damage. Still watching…

What Are Your Biggest Beauty Concerns?

February 27th, 2010 by Karen 28 Comments

Um, I would love to say I don’t have any or that I’m beyond such petty things, but that wouldn’t be true. My biggest issues are hyperpigmentation (dark spots on my face), acne, wrinkles (wrinkles AND acne!? WTF!?), dark circles and my weight.

My reasons for asking this today are 1) because my dark circles scared Tabs this morning and 2) because I’m bound and determined to help us find solutions to our most common concerns.

What are your biggest beauty concerns (choose up to 5)?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Thanks, girls, for the emails and tweets this morning about the Chilean earthquake and the tsunami warning in Hawaii. Those poor people in Chile. I can’t imagine how bad that must have been.

We spoke with our family on Oahu already (they woke up to air raid sirens!), and they’re all on high tsunami alert. El Hub’s parents live at the foot of a mountain range, though, so they should be out of reach if big waves hit the islands. They’re still stocking up on fresh water and taking other precautions in the unlikely event of power outages or sewage problems. We’ll know more in the next 20 minutes or so (waves are expected to reach Hawaii around 11:15AM PST) couple hours (waves now expected around 1PM PST).

5 Days of Chanel Rouge Coco: Take Me to 31 Rue Cambon

February 26th, 2010 by Karen 43 Comments

Paris seems light years away from my computer screen in California, but La Ville-Lumiere gets a oui bit closer with Chanel Rouge Coco in Cambon 31 ($30) on my lips.

Named after Coco’s Paris apartment at 31 Rue Cambon, this creamy pinkish red exudes the confident elegance of an impeccably cut Chanel tweed suit.

My closet may never meet a real suit crafted by Karl and Co., but Cambon makes me feel like the lights of Paris are right outside.

A spritz of my favorite Chanel perfume, Coco Mademoiselle ($95), and I slip into my favorite black dress (belted shift from H&M, $35)…

I can almost hear Coco whisper in my ear, “Oui, oui.”

Boots vs Blacktrack: How Do Expert Sensitive Cleansing Wipes Fare Against Long-Wear Eye Makeup?

February 26th, 2010 by Karen 29 Comments

I try to wait until I finish a pack of cleansing wipes before looking for a new one to try, but I’ve been wearing a lot of long-wearing eye makeup lately (MAC Blacktrack!!), and the Physicians Formula Organic Wear Towelettes I’ve been using just haven’t been up to the task.

Perusing the beauty aisles at Target the other day I noticed Boots Expert Sensitive Cleansing & Toning Wipes ($4.50) 1) because I like the font on the package (LOL!), and 2) because they’re made for sensitive skin (mine’s been extra sensitive lately).
